Mignolet of to Liverpool which would be a shame as he's actually quite good and could improve them. It would be their third signing of the summer and here we remain sitting on our thumbs.

Everyday that passes I'm getting ever more worried that this is going to be a repeat of the past few seasons of mediocrity. We float a few big name transfers and Gazidis statements of us having money to spend in the media to get season ticket renewals up before eventually just settling on the same old dross that we've seen in the past. FFS don't let me down Wenger. :(

I understand your general sentiments, but I'm not going to get all worked up because Liverpool have signed a has-been, an unknown and a decent (but inexperienced at top level) keeper.

But it would be nice for us to make an early statement, the club must realise this summer is make or break in terms of fan support.

Arsenal are increasingly confident of wrapping up the signing of Manchester United winger Luis Nani.

The Portuguese star looks set to leave Old Trafford this summer after the Premier League champions refused to bow to his pay demands during talks over a new contract.

Turkish giants Galatasaray were interested in making a move but claim to have been priced out of the transfer – with United apparently wanting £8.5million for the 26-year-old who only has one year to run on his current deal.

Juventus and Monaco are other possible destinations for Nani, but it is Arsenal who are now appear the front-runners to land the former Sporting Lisbon attacker.

Manager Arsene Wenger has plenty of money to spend during the off-season and sees the winger as a useful addition to his squad.

The Gunners were linked with a move for Nani during the winter but Sir Alex Ferguson refused to let the unsettled star leave.

Nani moved to Old Trafford in 2007 in a £17million deal.

He has shown flashes of brilliance during his six year stay in the north west but has struggled to live up to the standards of his countryman Cristiano Ronaldo.

He was a bit-part player during United’s title-winning campaign last season, making just seven starts and scoring three goals.

A natural wide player, would mean the end for Gervinho, scores goals

Wouldn't mind him.

Some people seem to equate running around bumping into other players, giving the ball away and being shockingly incompetent in front of goal with quality. I always ask. I don't understand why

a) Anyone realistically thinks we might sign Wayne Rooney
b) Anyone actually wants him

If he's not going to be loyal to United with what they have won in the last five years, why on earth would he be loyal to us.....he's clearly angling for more money as that is all that matters to that greasy turd.

c.) If he's going to leave Manure there's only a handful of clubs that could afford him. Take the foreign clubs out of that list because he won't live aboard and that leaves us, city and chavs. We could definitely afford him as we've just cut about £300k pw off the wage bill. I don't think he wants more money I think he wants to play as a striker and he's only ever gonna be second choice with RVP on the scene.

d.) Rooney is better than any player we have.

I'm fine with not signing Wazza because Higgy's probably more what we need. But make no mistake he is a genuinely world class, super super quality player. It would be a real statement of intent if we signed him. We couldn't do a lot better than Rooney because no such thing exists.

200 goals in 400 games. 50 in last 80. 4th highest ever man utd scorer. 6th highest ever in the prem and will finish in the top five, if not three. he's excellent in the prem. perfect for a team going for the title.

He's had two blinding seasons when he was the focal point of the attack with very good players setting him up, not least howard webb and all those pens.

The rest of his apps v goals per season read quite similar to Giroud's first season here.

He has been a very good player, but he is not in the same class as RVP, who is the player we want to replace.

Kano
18-06-2013, 09:36 PM
we should compare stats to giroud after 5 or more seasons, because with competition for places as utd have always had and not always being the main striker, he's scored a fuck load of goals. giroud as the main man would struggle to keep up his current ratio.

his achievements are very easily dismissed, mainly because he's a **** that plays for a **** team and he's a **** off the pitch too. he's never reached the heights expected and that has clouded a lot of other fans perception of how great he still is in this league.

he's an excellent premiership player. not the same level as rvp as you say but then again, very few are. higwayne isn't at the moment.

Don't look at gay little stats. What he's good at isn't measured by goals. And assists don't measure anything but fantasy football points. Just look at him as a footballer. You kick the ball to him, you get instant control and a guarantee that he'll play the best option. Our football is fucking embarrassing atm, and that's because we can't build moves, and that's because our forward line can't control slightly awkward balls. Rooney is an exceptional footballer. He would play in the same 'free role' position as Cesc did and he'd kick arse at it too. Guaranteed. But we should go for higgy because he's also top notch.

Marc Overmars

Before RVC went mental Rooney was arguably the best player in the league. He's incredibly driven and very selfless as well, I know many on here like a player who puts the team first and Wazza does just that. He would probably even be our 2nd best defender after Kos if you asked him to play at the back.

I can understand the reservations about him because lets face it, he's a ****, but with regards to his ability there is no doubt in my mind he is little bit good.

It won't happen anyway, so meh.

Even pretending we have ownership and management willing to make full use of our resources, this would be a criminal waste of them.

although im not sure whether wenger could handle rooney and his baggage. the pre-2005 wenger would have lapped it up but the recent one doesnt seem to have a clue tbh.

Arsenal transfers: Ray Parlour urges Gunners to spend £100m
Arsenal transfers: Ray Parlour urges Arsène Wenger to spend £100m this summer to transform Gunners into title contenders

Ray Parlour has urged Arsène Wenger to spend £100m this summer to transform Arsenal back into title contenders.

The Gunners, who finished fourth last term, have been heavily linked with a £22m move for Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain, as well as want-away Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney, in recent weeks.
And former Arsenal midfielder Parlour believes Wenger should break the bank to secure some top talent ahead of the 2013-14 campaign.
“They need to go out and spend money now, reports are saying there’s £70m available at the moment,” Parlour told Goal.
“If I was Arsène Wenger, I’d say go out and spend £100m and get the right players to have a real go of it next season.
“The whole point in moving stadium was to try to compete with the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona but now they are trying to compete with the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea, who will probably get stronger next season.
“That’s the most important thing for the fans, but now the club are in such a good state of mind with the stadium – they paid off a lot of money on that – and financially, they are in a very good situation.”
Parlour added: “The players that work for him on a regular basis would be very excited to have the likes of Rooney in the side, Higuain, who is a very good player at Real Madrid, and Fellaini, who has had a great few seasons at Everton.
“That’s the big question now, whether they can attract this sort of players to the club.”

Let's hope once this is done, Arsene moves on and focuses on upgrading other areas of the team/squad.

Sky have suspended betting on him joining.

Wouldn't it be kinda funny after all these years of selling your best players, not spending very much, keeping crap on high wages in the squad, all the warnings and doom-mongering of being overtaken by Spurs and dropping out the top 4 yet never actually doing so, that when you finally look to have turned a corner; spend big money on big-name players, keep your best ones and ship out the dross you finish 5th.

No?

The Cesar and Fellaini rumours appear to have gone cold - would be very happy if we signed all 3 but expect Wenger to sign a big name in Higuain to keep the fans happy then continue his project to try and polish a turd

Don't think there was anything in the Fellaini rumours really, even though we have cash now you can count on one hand the amount of players we've signed from the Prem - and they were bargain basement at best.

Very good.

Although, I get the feeling he isn't a big game guy and when he misses, they will be ridiculous sitters. He'll be another one that can annihilate the weaker opposition in the league.

Very big

Top scored at Euro 92

Brilliant at the 94 World Cup.

Didn't have the best of times at a very defensive Inter side but was still regarded as a big name

Arsenal are putting the finishing touches on a £50m bid for Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain, 25, and the club's billionaire shareholder Alisher Usmanov has also urged manager Arsene Wenger to make a move for 27-year-old Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.
