Juventus are confident they remain in the frame to sign striker Gonzalo Higuain from Real Madrid despite reports that Arsenal have agreed a deal with him.

The Serie A club’s general director, Giuseppe Marotta, said he believed the 25-year-old could still be the answer to his club’s striker shortage.

Manchester City forward Carlos Tevez and Stevan Jovetic of Fiorentina have also been linked with a move to Juve.

"Higuain? I do not want to say anything, because there is still so much time left for things to happen," Marotta told Sky Sports. "There is no hurry.”

He said Tevez and Jovetic “are both great players but they are also with great clubs, so it would not be right to discuss them”.

And he added that he was keen not to “create an illusion that things are already in motion".

Reports suggest Arsenal believe Higuain could complete a move to the Emirates Stadium on a four-year deal before they tour Indonesia, Vietnam and Japan next month.

Madrid have circulated his name to potential buyers, and the Gunners are thought to be prepared to break their £15 million transfer record to bring him to London.

Talks between Arsenal and Higuain's representatives have been ongoing in recent weeks.

Hopefully we get this completed sharpish. We'll need him for the UCL qualifiers. If we face a relatively decent European side I think having a top quality striker over two legs will be crucial. I wouldn't necessarily fancy our chances if our only threat up front was Giroud.

This worries me but doesn't surprise me if it's true. I'm not even sure what his preferred destination is, he's not really made noises about favouring either club if the lack of quotes in the media go by anything.

I just want us to get this one done, we absolutely cannot afford to dither on this one otherwise he'll be off to Juve.

In these instances, players tend to end up only where they want to end up. But one things for certain - Juventus are even stingier than we are. Doubt Juventus would've matched our wage offer and mega doubt they would've matched our reported transfer bid of £20m+. Not saying he won't go there - they are the Italian champions and a better club. But I think we've offered a better package to Madrid and Higgy.

Yep, I am with you. Juve are absolutely skint, I have no idea why they are even in the chase for him. Like you say, they have a very good team now and are a good striker away from being a credible CL challenger. Saying that, like you stated, I think we have offered Madrid more and Higgy bigger wages and could probably increase both offers assuming he's our no.1 target.

Kano
24-06-2013, 08:50 PM
that angle doesn't make sense because madrid managers traditionally never buy or sell their players. it comes down to the suits above. maureen is the only one who has broken that mode because they originally wanted him so badly. so i don't get why they are now waiting for ancelloti - good manager that he is but who is more than happy to play the good boy to club owners - to sign things off.

if madrid are willing to let the player agree terms, agree a fee with the buying club then he is as good as sold. what power would a real madrid manager have to come in and stop it all at this point. why not just sell him now?

we've been mata'd.

I think Higuain's first choice was Juve, he has effectively run out of options so it's us or nobody at the moment.

I do feel as if this has dragged on because both Real and the player haven't been fully committed to our offer. Let's be honest, if he really wanted to come here this would have been signed and sealed a while ago, he would have kicked up a fuss to force through the move.

I don't believe all this nonsense about them needing to appoint a new manager has anything to do with it.

Let's just hope Chelsea or Citeh don't come in because if so he won't hesitate on choosing either of those clubs over us.

We reap what we sow. Finally they are trying to sign some talent but the damage of years proudly proclaiming we were happy to be losers is going to take some time to repair. So many times we could have signed just the one star player to dispel the mythtruth and also possibly hang on to existing talent. But they penny pinched their way to this legacy. Good news is the last shareholders did amazingly well and the current ones will stuff a lot of cash in their pockets too. Yep, the damage has been done. It was bad enough going through years of us refusing to spend but what really hit the nail in the coffin was the ease of letting our star players leave.

Oh well...beggars can't be choosers, we have a sackful of cash and nobody to buy. What's more laughable is Wenger and Gazidis proclaiming we can afford Rooney and being in the hunt for him. Why on earth would he come here?!!

We don't win anything and don't look like winning anything. We routinely sell our best players, we don't pay our TOP players the market rate hence why they are sold most of the time. We lack ambition. Need I go on?

Rooney isn't going to leave a club that routinely wins trophies to come here? He still has a good few years left in him. Arsenal struggle to agree Higuain fee with Real Madrid

The Gunners remain locked in negotiations with los Blancos but are reluctant to pay more than £21 million for the Argentine striker and are now considering a fall-back option

Arsenal's bid to sign Gonzalo Higuain has stalled as they struggle to agree a fee with Real Madrid, Goal understands.

The Londoners are reluctant to pay above £21 million for the striker, while the Spanish giants hold out for £25.5m.

The two clubs remain locked in negotiations but Arsene Wenger is now understood to be eyeing up an alternative proven striker at a cheaper price.

Goal reported in June that an Arsenal delegation flew out to Madrid to finalise the Higuain deal with their Madrid counterparts.

However, the talks did not result in an agreement and, despite Arsenal's confidence that a deal can be secured, Wenger is now considering a fall-back option.

Arsenal have agreed the terms of a contract with Higuain that will start with a salary of £100,000-a-week, which will bring him in line with the club's top earners Theo Walcott and skipper Thomas Vermaelen.

Higuain will pocket a bumper pay rise if he completes a move to the Gunners as he is believed to be earning a relatively modest £64,000-a-week at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Juventus have also made the prolific forward an offer but are unwilling to pay a £20m-plus fee after signing Carlos Tevez and unveiling fellow forward Fernando Llorente on Tuesday.

Arsenal remain in pole position to capture Higuain, who has his heart set on a move to Emirates Stadium but has to remain patient while negotiations continue.

Wenger has prioritised the signing of a top forward this summer and retains a concrete interest in Wayne Rooney, who is keen to sever his ties with Manchester United.

The Higuain deal is regarded as easier to secure even though it would break the £20m transfer barrier and comfortably smash the club's transfer record.

Arsenal began their summer recruitment drive on Monday after completing the signing of Yaya Sanogo on a free transfer from Auxerre.

Yep.

Gazidis & Wenger should put up or shut up. It's no good them boasting about how we can afford player x, y & z and then haggling over loose change to complete a deal.

I wish they would just pay the money and close the deal. We have other pressing needs in the team that need addressing too.

I think we've seen a number of times in the past we'd rather spend most of the summer trying to negotiate a below market price than bite the bullet and pay the going rate to get someone we need signed up, in many cases leading to other clubs jumping in whilst we deliberate.

We've got the money, 25 million seems a fair price for a player of his quality and age, we should just pay it and move onto the next target.

So you believe in this theory that we're not announcing any signings because we're worried Man U won't sell Rooney to us if we've signed Higuain (or that the price will rocket), but you refuse to believe that we'd be struggling to agree a fee for a player when we've pretty done this kind of thing time and time again?

We don't know what's going on that's true, but because of what we've seen in the last 6-7 years hearing that we're haggling and want someone for less than the market price is no surprise. This deal has been dragging on a long time (if it's even real), but it wouldn't be entirely suprising to see us miss out on a player due to the transfer fee, we've got history in that area sadly.

On the other hand, us penny pinching in the face of an overwhelming need for genuine talent that could make a difference (rather than a string of prospects that end up eating the wage bill) is not a stretch of the imagination. It's us, after all.

Of course Madrid are probably holding out to see if city or the chavs or psg or some other comedy club starts throwing cash at them. This is why these clubs are no good for football, everything is inflated to shit.

If there's anything to any of the press BS then I hope the one thing that's not true is we are only looking for one striker. We have no strikers at the club right now (at least none that are in any way useful) - we need two. It'd be all well and good signing Higuain but if he gets injured we're back to square one with no options up top. Two strikers needed, excluding the bloke we just signed who I assume we signed after a strange season where we underperformed badly in terms of long term injuries. This new guy should get us back to the top of the injury tables where we belong.

We should probably bang out a deal now before focus is turned on Higuain as a back-up player but unless Madrid have other bidders, do we really need to pay the extra £5m? But to lose him over that amount would be stupid and there is no way we're getting Rooney for £25m if Chelsea are also looking at him.

Transfer News: Arsenal close on Gonzalo Higuain

Reports in Argentina claim Gonzalo Higuain's father - and agent - Jorge has finally been given permission by Real Madrid to open talks with Arsenal.

Higuain senior was quoted as telling Fox Sports Argentina: "We have been given permission by Real Madrid to negotiate with Arsenal.

"I will luckily be able to see my son in the Premier League soon." Higuain is now reportedly set to fly into England and could complete his long-awaited move over the weekend, but his father insists they have not yet agreed terms with Arsenal. "There isn't anything signed yet, but the negotiations are very advanced," he said. "We haven't spoken about the contract yet. Arsenal have made a great offer, in the same way as Juventus."

As long as they invest the Mt Everest of money they have been hoarding over the years in two world class strikers, a world class defensive midfielder, a world class right back and a world class keeper I'll be happy. Anything less than that and they are still robbing the fans blind.

Signing one world class player won't make any difference to the final outcome. We had RvP in the team, he couldn't turn it around by himself. The lack of investment and talent drain has to be corrected at some point, it might as well be now.

All offset against the fact most footballers and all agents are scum. Sometimes a reasonable offer won't be within a mile of what these greedy bastards are prepared to listen to. So whilst the fans would end up robbed if the gaps aren't properly filled, it would be understandable if they meet us half way, a couple of really decent signings, maybe three. Will we get that? I don't think so. Will we get anything at all? Maybe not, wouldn't be the first time.

wouldn't a 3 year contract mean we'd have to offer him a new contract next season, sell him to avoid losing money or lose money the season after? cos let's face it, this wouldn't be anything more than a strategic career choice, not the start of a long term match made in heaven.

Özim

3 year contract would be totally pointless, risky game to sign a player at that price on such a short contract. As mentioned we either offer him a new contract next season (probably on more money), or we sell him 2 years down the line.

He's 25 so there's no logic from our point of view on signing him for 3 years, from his point of view however it could be perfect to move onto to a more successful club in a couple of years.

It's all horseshit. Journos have embarrassed themselves on this transfer.

The Guardian guy who talked about the 3 year contract has backtracked.

"It is possible that I may have understood timescale structure of deal (transfer) to have been timescale structure of deal (contract)..."
"Put it this way, I just spoke to someone (not original source, other person) who effectively said: "no, you bellend, payment, not contract".
"hehe so effectively you are saying that the "3 years" might actually be the length of time #afc pay the fee, not contract length?
Retweeted by Sid Lowe"
"Apologies. At least the fundamentals remain the same: Higuaín move to Arsenal finally very close."

so it's happening

about bloody time. is this the year we finally see some change? if only we done this a few years ago, would have saved causing a civil war at the club. we were never asking for huge amounts to be spent, just buy the experienced players needed regardless of price tag.

it would have prevented it getting to this.

very surprised city arent in for him. they need a striker and he fits the bill, and is much cheaper than what they're looking at.

ARSENAL last night smashed their transfer record when they agreed a £23million fee for Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain.
The Argentine will undergo a Gunners medical today and is expected to sign a three-year £100,000-a-week deal.
Higuain, 25, has been given permission by Madrid to fly to London following weeks of negotiations. And boss Arsene Wenger has made it clear he wants the powerful goalscorer on board when Arsenal head for their tour of the Far East next Thursday.
The deal, which has been confirmed by the player’s father Jorge, comes as a huge relief for Wenger, who had promised Arsenal fans to spend serious money this summer after eight years without winning a trophy.
The Gunners’ previous biggest signing was the £16.5million they paid to sign Santi Cazorla from Malaga last summer and propels the club back into the big time.
Now Wenger wants to build on Higuain’s imminent arrival by pressing ahead with negotiations for Wayne Rooney and Julio Cesar.
Rooney is still weighing up his future at Manchester United but would demand in excess of £200,000 a week.
Brazilian keeper Cesar, who has a £90,000-a-week contract at QPR, will be allowed to leave Loftus Road as a free agent just to get him off the wage bill.
The ex-Inter Milan keeper, 33, wants to stay in London despite interest from Barcelona.
And Wenger believes that the capture of Higuain will convince other world-class stars to join.

That's my only worry, that he may be all finisher. Will definitely take him to be honest though, quality finisher. In addition we should really be after a creative natural wide player, ala Bernard or Spanish type midget. Playing Theo, Forehead, Podolski etc ..out wide is pointless and greatly harming our game.
