good day of test cricket that. if we can somehow still be batting by lunch tomorrow, i reckon we have a good chance of saving this test match. knowing what the aussie bowlers are like injury wise, even if they can, i cant see them enforcing the follow on, they have bowled over 120 overs this innings and only have three days between matches. i think they would need a rest.

from an england point of view, this series so far and well the summer too, im questioning the places of trott, broad and bairstow. all three have failed to perform this series, so id drop bairstow for taylor, broad for tremlett and give trott one more match myself

McNamara That Ghost...
03-08-2013, 11:10 PM
The forecast is terrible from lunch onwards for the rest of the match. Unless England have two of the greatest collapses of all time, it's looking like a draw.

Dissapointing way to retain the Ashes really, given England are only just in this match.

Australia have to enforce the follow on, no chance of winning the Ashes realistically otherwise - their bowlers will get plenty of rest from rain breaks.

Exactly the right mentality.

The hour I watched yesterday, KP went to score runs off every ball he faced. Wasn't always successful of course but compare that to Bell who was blocking and leaving everything.

One scored a century, the other got out embarrassingly

Australia in tricky position here. They need to file a total lead safe enough to be in no danger of being caught, but with enough time to bowl England out as they have to win the match. Weather-permitting, we could therefore be looking at a Kofi-esque "controlled frenzy".

Bat for a session, get 100 up. Set 250 and then try and get England out ASAP before the rain hits.

Isn't it time they used Snicko? I mean not on its own but when it backs up something shown on HotSpot or whatever, like both of them have to be suggesting the same thing for any decision to be made/overturned.

The problem with introducing technology to a place where it hadn't often been used...nobody really knows how to best use it. I'd be third umpire, how hard it can be? Well very if I follow the directives by the ICC I guess but just let me make the decisions ad-hoc.

Ollie the Optimist
04-08-2013, 01:01 PM
the hotspot inventor said it misses fine edges of fast bowlers, so with that case just now. snicko shows a noise, nothing on helmet, shoulder but hot spot misses it. its not good enough

Snicko takes about 3-4 minutes to come up after it is called. Apparently that sorry state of affairs is being looked at, finally. It is probably the most foolproof of the available methods...

i think i agree with vaughan. get specialist third umpires trained up. take some of the on field ones we have now, so they have the expereince of being out in the middle, but train them so they only third umpires. taht way we have specialist umpires in charge of DRS rather then on field umpires who might just want to back up their mates on the field to an extent

hindsight is a wonderful ting, but i think clarke should have declared a lot earlier in the fist innings IMO. batted slightly to long, and england haven't exactly performed brilliantly with the bat first innings. could have taken a bigger risk and i reckon if they had, they might be in a very strong winning posistion atm

Yep. When you're in a situation where you know you will HAVE to declare though, that is arguably the worst one of all. Natural temptation is to think that 'you might just need a few more runs to be safe yet'.. If he'd declared with a lead of 250 odd, Clarke would have got pelters if England had made it. And rightly or wrongly, he is no position to do that with Australia not paying heed to anybody who isn't Border II

are you talking about declaring now in the second innings or the first?

my point was about the first. england havnt performed well in the first innings all summer, so going for a lead of 500 odd was a bit greedy imo. if he had declared at about 450, hed have more time to bowl at england and force a result. they batted until after tea on day 2. with the weather forecast, allowing yourself two days to bowl england out twice, and potentially bat again as well was a tad optimistic. hindsight is a wonderful thing but just got to wonder

even with the lights on at the end, it still was too dark apparently, or at least wasnt above the light meter level that was required.

however, it rained about 20 minutes afterwards so although it was bit of a farce, the end result would still be the same

Not the best way to retain the ashes with it being draw because of rain. But the Aussies are two nil down for a reason, they got themselves in a position where they had to win all three. Weather always plays a part. England deserve to retain the ashes, Australia don't deserve to win them. Simple
