Towards the end it was a bit like the Spurs game - attack vs defence - and both times we held out brilliantly.
There does seem something about this side, bit more steel this season - started at the tail end of last season and has carried on this.

Mature win, our defending as a unit is improving every game and this result is testament to that. The belief must be high, just what we need going into the weekend.

What more can you say about Aaron Ramsey.... I routed into this guy the majority of last year, but he did look different in pre season and wow...:tiphat: to him cause he's showing how good he is.

Fucking awesome win!!

Lewandowski is an uber cunt, im quite sure if we watch the match again, that he dived every single time an arsenal player attempted a tackle or taking the ball from him, even tried to dive twice for the penalty, should have been shown a 2. yellow from all that diving.

Despite Dortmund having most shots on goal, i think we actually had the most dangerous chances, Ramsey's 2. shot and BFGs being milimeter close twice and HOW THE FUCK was it not a penalty on koscielny!? It was clear, even for the ref, to see that he never touched the ball and just cannonballed koscielny and fuck off dortmund fans for booing him, try and get a hit like that and then get up and keep playing in a hard match like that.

Amazing win. I'm so proud of the boys!

The Kos and Mert partnership is well and truly blossoming. They're both rocks and complement each other so well. Sagna is very good on the right too. I'm slightly concerned about Gibbs as they did cause him trouble a couple of times on that wing, but I still love him.

The downsides were Arteta and Ramsey who couldn't live with their mids on the counter attack. Ramsey had a terrible game but came out with the winning goal AGAIN  :scarf:

Not quite, if Dortmund beat Napoli they'll both be on 9 points. Presuming we beat Marseille we'll be on 12.

If we lose to Napoli by 3 goals they'll go above us on head to head. While Dortmund beating Napoli and Marseille will also put them on 12 above us, as they've won our head to head on away goals effectively.

If all three teams are tied it would go on away goals scored between all three sides or indeed goal difference between all three sides, so Napoli would miss out, assuming away goals stay as they currently are. It's why we were above Napoli going in to this game.

Agreed. But suddenly there looks to be a bit of steel about this team and I am more confident now than before that we won't lose our heads. The communication is a lot better, and the likes of Flamini and Arteta should help us in that department. We came back after Dortmund and Chelsea at home - and results like tonight's create a fear factor in other teams. Match was filthy as fuck but fantastic result. Effort levels were phenomenal even though our football wasn't fluent at any stage of the game. But that's probably because Dortmund are absolute bastards to play against. They just won't stop pressing. This starting XI have put in a magnificent shift twice in the week already. We know how to defend now. That is the single biggest catalyst for our form IMO.

For years we've had our positive attacking play undermined by some appalling defending but now we seem to have struck up a balance. Long may it continue.

Seen them given and I wouldn't have complained if it was. Mertesacker shouldn't be holding him like that. 50/50 call but by the same standard Giroud could've had a more clear cut pen. Wasn't impressed by the refereeing tonight.

Fucking amazing win. I had an inkling it may be a reverse of the home fixture.

Puts us in a good position to go through with it being completlely in our hand and the pressure focused on others. However we absoutely can not underestimate Marseille at home - we haven't won that yet. Despite not picking up any points so far Marseille have a good team and have come close a few times (including tonight against Napoli) and it would be just our luck for them to get their first points against us. It's certainly not a given at all and it would completely ruin the hardwork of tonight.

Let's just hope we put in a professional performance against the frogs, get the three points and at the same time Fatty Rafa can get something at Dortmund thereby ensuring our qualification.

Hopefully Theo and Jack are back for Utd. We desperately need them right now as the current team must be shattered. They've put in two A++ performances in the space of 4 days.

Also I said it after Liverpool but we aboustely have to ensure that the likes of Rosicky and Sagna are signed up. Offer them 2 or whatever they wants. It's vital we don't lose their experience and class within the squad.

And get BFG signed on a new deal asap. His performances wouldn't have gone unnoticed in Europe hence we need to get him hitched up before the likes of Bayern come sniffing around.

Hard earned win and a big step forward. The way we defend as a unit is really impressive, we never looked like conceding after we went infront.

Sagna and Rosicky must be offered new deals, these guys are the longest serving currently at the club and their exeperience is vital. mert + Kos were superb yet again, really marshalling the back line.

Proud of the boys, and hope we can use this as another springboard ala bayern last season.

I haven't been a big Wenger fan of late but I have to admit it was great to see his interview on Sky last night after the game, he actually smiled & almost licked his lips at the mention of Old Trafford on Sunday. The old boy's really enjoying himself & why not after a win like that. It was only 6 months ago we watched them murder Real Madrid in CL semi's & thought shit!! - we're light years behind. One world class signing, belief in your team mates, defensive cohession & confidence ousing from the likes of Rambo.
Special mention to Rosicky last night, thought the guy ran his bollocks off for an oldie. Kos & Merts excellant, Sagna & Gibbo defended well. Arteta did his job once he had decided he didn't want to get sent off, its was tough for the rest if them as we were not attacking & throwing bodies forward but after the goal we looked like we could score again.
We have debated about buying world class players & having quality on the bench, we scored due to a pathetic pass from their greek stand-in for Hummels. If you watch the goal look at where he runs to after he's given the ball away. This is the differnce between winning at the top level & not. Too many times this has been us with the likes of Toure, Senderos, Eboue. Physical players but brain dead footballing wise. Hopefully we are witnessing the NEW ARSE AGE.

Two great results on the spin, can we make it a hattrick?

Thought we defended really well yesterday, the back 4 looked very solid, midfield worked hard and was industrious (though Arteta wasn't far from getting sent off after his yellow and having a few niggles at Dortmund players) though we didn't do much going forward until after we scored. Up front Giroud worked hard, some nice touches without looking dangerous in front of goal, setup the goal nicely though.

Very satisfying win though

Thats not true, our lord and savior; Sir Bendtner is actually the longest serving :D

To the thread: its crazy to think about, that Dortmund is the one, being in danger of ending up 3rd now, who would have thought that before chl started? :D A draw vs Napoli will send them out right? Unless we only get 1 point in our last 2 games.

Rambo!

Agreed.

I don't think it should be overlooked the effect his fitness has had this season.

After a solid pre-season he really hit the ground running. He is faster, sharper, stronger, and his conditioning is phenomenal.
The upshot is, he's finally playing with the confidence of knowing his body will do what he asks of it.
He always had the technique, now the physical is pretty much optimal and the mental isn't a million miles behind.

You can see certain parallels to where Jack is now and where Ramsey was a year ago.
With any luck, and if he works like a a bastard, Jack should be capable of a similar transformational leap.

There are some paralells with Jack. But they are limited to on the pitch. Off the pitch, you never heard from Rambo any of the crap surrounding Jack. I'm genuinely worried that Jack lacks the same level of maturity shown by Ramsey.

I could be wrong though. I was spectacularly wrong about Ramsey - as were many others. When you think about what he went through and the flack Ramsey subsequently got from a significant portion of his own support - it makes what he has achieved even more remarkable.

Make no mistake - Ramsey is a strong character.

Oddly enough, that's why I have less worries about Jack finding his form and consistency again than I did with Aaron: because he is a little bit immature, and doesn't over-think things too much. He's a bit like Gazza in that respect, in that he's a bit of a big kid who loves playing - there's no other thought in his head. And whilst that child-like attitude and immaturity can be a bit of a liability at times, if you don't manage them carefully (on and off the pitch), it can also be an asset, in that such players very rarely seem to suffer from mental hang-ups about anything (e.g. getting clattered again, if they're back from a serious injury) or crises of confidence, and they very rarely (if ever) lack for motivation, because they're just so naturally enthusiastic about playing. Anywhere.

Those players are rare at the top level though, and most are like Aaron: players who have the natural ability (and sometimes even more so), but who, at some point, need to dig deep and find that strength of character and mental determination before they can really hit their true potential. That's not a bad thing either though - it might take a bit longer for them to find themselves as a real top-level player, but you need that maturity and focus in your side just as much as you need the effortless enthusiasm, and some(/most) of the greatest players I've ever seen have fallen into this camp (Henry, Bergkamp, Vieira, van Perscunt, Ronaldo, etc - players who look scarily focussed and/or determined at times when the camera zooms in on them).

The other thing that's worth bearing in mind with Jack [beyond regaining his fitness] is that the current team is now quite a bit different to the last one he played in. Before his injury, he was in a midfield with Fabregas and Song, and had van Persie, Nasri and Walcott in front of him - in the side he's come back into this season, however, Walcott is the only one of those 5 that remains, and even he's been out since september. It's probably going to take him a while to find his place in this new look side (although hopefully not too long - the way he linked up with Cazorla and Giroud for that goal against Norwich bodes well)...

Comparisons with Gazza worry me because of how that turned out! He never fulfilled the potential had, but he does have some mental illness which made him unmanageable. I don't think Jack does, I think he's just a bit of an idiot. But he's young and will hopefully grow out of all that.

He's not just young - he's a young Dad too, so any trips to the nightclub will be immediately logged and banked by the Mrs for later! He can't afford to let that get out of hand.

Gazza's biggest problem, IMO, was that he was never managed well - he moved around too much, and was allowed to indulge all the worst parts of his personality, and never really had anyone to keep him in line. Jack can be a bit of a shagwit at times, but he's got a lot more stability and support around him at Arsenal.

Besides, the comparison was more about how he is on the pitch than off of it...

Jack is more probably the more nturally talented out of he two but i think Ramsey is more mature in his approach. at times last season jack was our best player and that game against Swansea was probably his best for us. to be fair to him he hasnt played in his favourite position this season; in the middle alongside a holding player, and has been playing wide right or left which is all new for him.

Nah, come on. Enough with the excuses. Jack has missed 15 months of development through injury but he is now already 21 years old. It's all over for him now just as it was for Ramsey a year ago. Need to sell him to Aston Villa while the English hype is still strong.

The difference is simple. Ramsey is Welsh, therefore wasnt hyped to death by the press. You dont see the dehabilitating arrogance you see from Wilshere on and off the pitch.

Compare Bellamy to Owen, Bale to Adam Johnson, Giggs to Gazza. If two players are roughly equally talented the Welsh one will go on to be the better player. Fact.

Indeed, no doubt Jack lacks the maturity of Ramsey, and probably some of the smart self-awareness as well. Rambo gets slated for being interviewistically dull, but he is giving the textbook, non-answers of a seasoned sports pro. Speak in generalisations, remain non-committal, and never ever say anything controversial.

On the other hand, Jack's propensity to wear his heart on his sleeve probably means he'll get a lot more leeway from supporters.
There's a lot of goodwill toward him and the desire to see him do well. He'll be given every chance, and he's never lacked for determination. The hardest fight he'll have is with the flaws in his own character which apparently Ramsey didn't have.

My biggest worry about Jack, is where are we gonna place him in this team? Our #8 and #10 are amongst the best in the world and they're both young and in Ramsey's case he's probably staying at Arsenal forever and Özil will only leave if we get a super silly offer for him. If he could develop better defensive skills, i could see him be a better version of Arteta, but i dont think he is mature enough for that right now.

I think if you're gonna be amongst the best and Jack certainly have the potential for that, you need to be playing as much as possible and not be a rotation player. He's built his reputation on the basis of one standout season before he got injured, including a Motm display against barca in a famous win. Wether he will get back to that level amd improve is debatable given recent injuries, however as we have seem with Ramsey, it's foolish to write a player off who clearly has talent because of injuries. Wether he will do a Ramsey or become a diaby we can't be sure but he's a talented player and will improve. Now with Ramsey being in form of his life. Ozil etc the pressure is off jack to improve and at the same time be our best player

Going back to the off field stuff, the cig IMO is minor but I can just about see your point on that. The England team comments are not something you can use against him given everyone pretty much agrees with him. Amd his twitter? I follow him and he never says anything bad so unless I missed it, I think you need to expand further in that

It's not so much a case of saying bad things, more a case of being totally cringeworthy with some of his comments, it's literally as if a 10 year old was posting messages at times.

I just think the club should ban him from using Twitter to be honest, for his own good more than anything else.

But what is it he says? Often he praises fans, says great win or apologies for loss amd will try harder next time. What exactly does he tweet that annoys you? Come on give examples otherwise you just look petty

I can't remember exact comments, but a few have been posted on here (and linked to on here) and I remember thinking they were cringeworthy.

what chavvy stuff in poor in english though? come on Zimm at least use some examples to back up your claims instead of just coming out with claims that you have no facts to back them up with. He's probably sent 1000's of tweets, I'm sure some of them won't be in perfect english, but most of his tweets tend to be, working hard to get back in team, great win, thanks for the support, proud to be called up for england, sorry for the loss, we will try harder next match.

nothing wrong with those

Why does it matter if he speaks in "chavvy poor English" anyway? He's not working towards getting a PhD in English language is he?

He most likely didn't have the best education, coupled with spending most on the pitch instead of the classroom and where he grew up, I'm not astonished that he doesn't sound like Shakespeare all of a sudden. Why the need to engage in class warfare Zim?

Like I said I can't quote exact examples, but I've seen them a number of times when people have posted his Twitter exchanges, IMO he should stay off Twitter. His comments about the English and the England team were also

Some people just aren't really made for talking to the media etc and he's one of them and for that reason I think he should just keep to himself and focus on his football.

I guess it doesn't matter, but if you're not that smart I suggest staying out of the media, some players are good at handling the media and answering questions the way they should be answered, he isn't really.

It's not class warfare at all, more to do with level of intelligence and he doesn't come across as that intelligent (even in interviews) so I think it would be better for him to stay away from all things like that so that he doesn't make himself look daft.

He's good at football so that's what he should be doing, playing football, we all have different talents.

I've not been found guilty of anything, it's just a spelling mistake, I can clearly see it's wrong upon looking at it. My grasp of the English language however is pretty good all in all.
