Bresnan is endemic of their willingness to change the bowling as horses for courses but rarely the top order batting line-up, unless it's enforced.

I do like Bresnan though, he's usually a 7/10 player.

I like Prior, but he can't stay in the team on his current form. KP can fuck off forever for all I care. Just not sure there's anything in this touring party to change things up. If Broad's injured, I'd get Bresnan in, even though I don't like much as a cricketer because Tremlett and Rankin are equally ineffective and lesser batsmen.

Don't think Compton should have been dropped last year, and Onions should have got games in the summer and also be part of the set up.

Rors

Truly disastrous tour and it's not even over yet! Some of the warning signs were there in the summer - like struggling to get above 400 (or at all?) and only dominating with the ball whereas it had been with bat and ball in 2010/11 but I didn't expect this to happen.

Have to treat Melbourne and Sydney as serious One-Off Tests. I.e ruthless changes. But ones with winning in mind. Broad not being 100% is perfect opportunity to give one of the Big Tall Medium Fast Pacers a chance, Swann is doing nothing so might as well give Monty a go, and Prior is having a fucking 'mare. As for KP, just go home.

As comments on the Guardian Vic Marks' article suggest though, too many of the squad are just too damn matey in this context. Anderson, Swann and Prior in particular are thick as thieves. Nothing necessarily wrong with that in itself, but it means that Flower daren't upset one of them for fear of the house of cards coming down. Dangerous.

Theyre facing the same problems as India did from 2011. They'd achieved everything they wanted to - the World Cup, no. 1 test ranking - and they didn't have the fire to keep performing. England are relying on too many 30+ year olds. No coincidence that some talented young player showed more fight and managed to deal with pace quite easily. The Aussies aren't very good. It has been a disgusting performance from England, and the lowest quality Ashes series probably since Bradman was notching up 300s against villagers.

It is no excuse AT ALL, but I think having back-to-back Ashes series might have an adverse impact on motivation. Broad carrying the local paper under his arm to the press conference after Day One. Okay, funny (and said publication were clearly dunces), but it gave the impression the job was already done. Beefy channelling the spirit of Pigeon with his predictions didn't help...

Tankerville

Charles Bennett, Fourth Earl of Tankerville, played an important part in Chertsey's preeminence in the late 18th century. Educated at Eton from 1753 to 1760, he succeeded to the Earldom in 1767. In 1771 he married Emma, daughter of Sir James Colebrook of Gatton, and soon afterwards they settled at Walton on Thames. He had a rather murky reputation - he once got involved in a brawl with a coachman - and one report said that he was "renowned for nothing but cricket playing, bruising and keeping low company." A sound batsman, for much of the 1770s he was a keen patron of Surrey cricket and a regular member of the Chertsey side. His enthusiasm for the game extended to him employing "Lumpy" Stevens as his gardener as well as William Bedster.

That's really bad in a total of 269 with 3 wickets in hand. If half those balls went to Buttler, England might've reached 300.

England screwed over by an umpiring decision early in Warner's innings. Buttler caught the edge, Warner walked, third umpire didn't accept it.

What a dreadful tour.

Syn
31-01-2014, 06:53 PM
Apart from watching England get their feathers ruffled in the first test, it's been a very dull tour IMO. So uncompetitive that it just hasn't been fun. It has however speeded up a lot of the structural change that England were going to have to face. That's about the only good thing about this.

If England somehow manage to convince Gary Kirsten to coach them, they're laughing. By far the best coach in the world right now. His track record has been sublime.

an awful tour but i hope Andy Flower is remembered as Englands greatest coach. 3 consecutive ashes wins including one in Austrialia, a first series win in India for almost 30 years, world number one test side, T20 world champions and some very impressive test wins against most sides.

I think on balance it was the right decision for him to go but what he did for English cricket should never be forgotten. Flower and Strauss took england to heights never reached before.
