Tottenham have spent millions trying to catch Arsenal... but the Gunners can now celebrate 'St Totteringham's Day' for the 19th year running

Not that long ago, Daniel Levy was hailed as the best deal-maker since Warren Buffett, and Arsene Wenger a hapless failure who wouldn’t put his hand in his pocket.

Now that Arsenal fans are celebrating finishing above Spurs for the 19th year in a row, it’s hard to imagine eight months ago some of them were complaining that Paulinho, Roberto Soldado and Erik Lamela were going to White Hart Lane rather than The Emirates.

The Gunners fans have a light-hearted name to mark the exact day they are guaranteed finishing above Spurs – St Totteringham’s Day. That happened on Monday following the 3-0 win against Newcastle.

‘It’s like Easter – it falls on a slightly different date each year but you know it’s coming,’ smiles actor and broadcaster Tom Watt, an Arsenal fan since 1966.
‘Personally, I wasn’t overly-concerned at the start of the season because I thought Spurs were massively overpaying for what they were getting.

‘But there was a definite feeling among Arsenal fans of “Just spend some money”. When Mesut Ozil came, it was exciting. I don’t how much was because it was Ozil, and how much was because we’d actually spent £42million on anyone!

'AVB talked about Arsenal being in a negative spiral. It was a silly thing to say at the time, and looks even sillier now.'

Arsenal’s home defeat against Aston Villa on the opening day of the season in August – before a deal for Ozil had been agreed - led to widespread discontent at The Emirates that Wenger hadn’t made any signings.

Tottenham’s win at Crystal Palace 24 hours later with a new team assembled from their Gareth Bale money led to the assumption that Levy was a champ, Wenger the chump.

But now that Monday night’s win against Newcastle guarantees Arsenal finish higher than Spurs again, the recriminations are all on the Spurs side.

Wenger did spend big, eventually, on Ozil. And while his form has ranged between mesmerising and mediocre, there is no doubt he brought a wave of positivity to the club, reflected in best-ever seasons for Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud.

As for Spurs, oh dear. After that early optimism, history now indicates they wasted the £86million they got from Real Madrid for Gareth Bale by spending £110 million on seven not-so-magnificent players.

Instead of replacing Elvis with The Beatles, they bought One Direction – young, flimsy and unproven.

Those players got Andre Villas-Boas the sack and are unlikely to keep Tim Sherwood in a job beyond the summer.

Top of the flops was £30million Erik Lamela, signed from Roma on the advice of director of football Franco Baldini but too young to make an impact in the more-physical Premier League.

Lamela hasn’t played in 2014 because of a back injury. Spanish international striker Soldado was meant to provide goals. At £26million, more than the six in 27 Premier League appearances he’s managed.

And so it goes on. Paulinho, Etienne Capoue, Vlad Chiriches and Nacer Chadli are all raw and may come good in time, but this season they’ve been nowhere near the standards required – those set down the Seven Sisters Road and across Finsbury Park by Ramsey, Laurent Koscielny and Santi Carzola.

The only exception has been Christian Eriksen, an £11million Dane signed from Ajax who has scored or assisted 15 goals in 23 games.

Spurs fans won’t need reminding the last time they finished higher than Arsenal was so long ago, John Major was Prime Minister and Blackburn Rovers league champions (1994/95).

With Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jack Wilshere due to return for Arsenal and Wenger promising to sign a big-name striker, while Spurs have been snubbed by their top managerial candidate Louis van Gaal, St Totteringham’s Day could be celebrated for many years to come.

Watt is optimistic too – provided Wenger stays at the club.

‘Arsenal’s domination could be indefinite if the club continues to be run like it has done for 40 years. Look at how many managers we’ve had compared to Spurs for example.

‘I can’t see it changing but who knows what can happen in football. The kind of anti-Wenger people might end up getting what they wish for (Wenger’s contract ends this summer).

‘I think it will be more to do with what goes on at Arsenal than at Spurs. If we get it right, I think St Totteringham’s Day will continue for some time yet.’

I'm confused whether it's St Totteringham's Day now.
We need a point to make it impossible for Spurs to finish above us. If we get that tonight does that make the whole day St Totteringham's Day?

I presume the bank holiday is to mark 20 consecutive years of St Totteringham's Day.

Niall_Quinn

The Fat Lady has cleared her throat and the conductor has raised his baton and is 99.999998% through his upstroke. The air in the lungs of the brass section has cleared the mouth, entered the instrument and is about to make the first vibration for the first sound.

So we aren't quite there yet.

A point today and it is done. The most they can finish on is 67 points. We'll have 68 today if we draw.

If we lose all our remaining games and the spuds win all theirs and improve their goal difference by about 25 in the process (depending on how badly we were to lose our games), they could still scrape above us.

Given Wenger's recent track record for doing the barest of bare minimum, it's still unlikely we'll lose all our remaining games because Liverpool might pip us. For Wenger to achieve the bare minimum one win and 4 losses would probably be enough (still St Totteringham's Day), or 3 draws and 2 losses (still St Totteringham's Day). Even then, Liverpool would have to win all their games. So Wenger may need to gamble and lose all 5 then hope Liverpool drop 3 points. That's a bit risky, even for him. I don't think there's much he can do to prevent finishing in the top 4 easy this season.
