I kinda feel the same happened to Wenger as a manager, over a longer time period.
He came to England in the era when squads were full of English players and there were drinking schools in clubs.
His fitness regime and knowledge of the modern game were years ahead of his time. But over the course of a couple of decades people caught up and overtook us and with the billionaires barging in suddenly the whole game moved out and he didn't.
Ah well.

Agree there. But then again that is the way of the world I guess. Managers and playershave their time and move on. Would rather have what we have ATM - a manager hopefull on the up - than be Sp*rs...

Just reading the attached report about Mavs and how well he is playing at Stuggart on loan.

There was much hype about this guy. I remember he played for us at OT in his first season and had a solid game. Unfortunatly, he has missed a lot of playing time through injury.

He is only 23 and seems to be playing well and should get better.

What are your thoughts on him?

i'd completely forgotten about him but he seems like another talented young player being ignored by Arteta

I've not entirely written him off yet - he's got all the physical attributes you'd want in a CB, and the fact that he was Mislintat's first recommendation / signing for us is worth a raised eyebrow.

That being said his biggest issue for us (apart from the rawness that you expect of a CB at that age) was fitness - literally one injury after another meant he never really progressed. The way Stuttgart's manager raves about him in that article you'd think he would be one of the first names on the team sheet when available, so the fact that he's only managed 849 minutes of football in the Bundesliga as of Mar 2 makes me think that the injuries must still be an issue?

We obviously had too many centre backs so sending him on loan was the right decision.

Still not convinced he has a future here, but we'll see.

only too many if you think Luiz should be a starting CB which i don't - i'd rather see him than Xhaka as a DM though

Luiz is inconsistent - but when on form arguably our best CB. the problem is that every 2/3 starts there will be a massive brain fart from him. Anyways - he's gone at the end of the season so the issue is moot.

He sounded like someone who didn’t really have much going on in his life apart from Arsenal, literally lived for the club. I remember watching an interview with him during pre-season and he spoke about how much he hated the summer because there were no games and it was the time depression always got hold of him. Too many people have this toxic relationship with football I worry.

Very sad though. RIP.
Some of those early viral videos were great at the time until AFTV became an awful parody of itself.

i think it still can cause big highs and lows

i remember that home game against Palace on Easter Sunday a season or two ago

i cooked a roast lunch for my wife and father-in-law and then walked to the ground on a lovely sunny day

i was feeling happy and enjoying the game with the people around me when Mustafi did that thing where he basically gave the ball to Zaha who then scored

i'd had a bit to drink at lunch and found myself shouting "you f*****g c**t!!! at the top of my voice and basically going crazy

the next season the guy next to me moved seats

not sure it was my fault but it could have been...

basically that game - and in particular that player - ruined what had been a really good day

so that's the trouble with football...

Would be lovely to cash-in on most of these players but, as always, who is going to want them? Especially on the wages some of them are on. Arteta has a few months left to build a team out of the younger players. He won't do it with the shit-kickers he's placed his faith in so far. The clock is ticking for him. If he's smart he'll get to work right away. If he persists then the likelihood is he'll be out the door before many of the wasters he's been picking.

Oh noes. A social media boycott.
Now how are we going to see “the lads” pratting around in training, goofing around like they haven’t spent all season blundering around embarrassing themselves.

How are we going to know who our official snack partner is unless they post about it on social media.

Just win some games, you pricks!

True. But. The season before Leicester were battling relegation. Winning the title the following season was incredible.
Sure, it did rely on all the big guns being awful at the same time and Arsenal being...Arsenal.
But as a story it was amazing and for my money trumps the Invincibles.

The fact we won the title in 2003/4 wasn't remarkable - we were the best side and really should have won it the season before.
The unbeaten thing is the story of course but let's be honest with ourselves, we rode our luck in a few games - you have to in a run like that.
I'm not diminishing the achievement, but I'm a sucker for an underdog story.

Not really - the original decision doesn't have to have been positively biased. This would suggest that VAR gets it right. It very often doesn't.

Difficult one really because we fans will always be biased towards our team (and tend to watch Arsenal so see the VAR decisions that affect us). But subjectively, we do appear to have been on the end of some mystifying decisions that costs us points/game advantage - that are extraordinary given that Stockley Park is supposed to anaylse things properly.

He'll be waiting for us to waive the fee so he can top his "reduced" wages up with another fat signing-on fee - probably a last-minute, deadline-day deal...

It won’t be far off if we roll into the season with all of the same faces who weren’t up to it last year! Still so, so many problem players and filler that we’re relying on.

Most interesting part is you can see the intent is to play a higher line this year - I can see it working with White and Gabriel, but man! There’s gonna be some heart attack games whenever Holding and Mari come into the side! Needs to happen though - we can’t keep sitting deep to cover for their lack of pace and expecting our attacking play to improve at the same time...

Don’t think it’s that simple - they were clearly prepared to sanction his sale, and we’ve had money on the table for replacements. It just hasn’t worked out with the one club who were in for him.

Whatever happens with Xhaka, though, it can’t be used an excuse not to invest in CM - Elneny, Torreira, Willock and AMN could all be sold if the issue is raising funds / cutting wages / freeing up space. That’s on top of Guendouzi who’s already gone.

On the plus side, Lokonga’s looking good! Which is really fucking handy because it looks like we’re going to be relying on him from game one!

It could still happen, but any hope of early business and a settled, well-prepared squad are certainly dead now. I can see a lot of deals being done really late because a lot of European clubs really are on their knees, but I'm not gonna lie - I'm starting to get worried looking at our opening fixyures. Arteta can't afford a slow start, but it's looking like that's exactly what he's going to get...

I just think its telling the only players we have sold this summer are Mavropanos and Guendouzi, and even that was for relative peanuts. The market is knackered and any hopes of generating a decent income this summer are looking slim. I think we'll see some players leave on loan but presumably that means limited funds for any further signings.

we just need to clear out AMN, Xhaka, Nelson and Nketiah, forget the about the transfer money, clubs in Europe are really hard-hit and we don't seem to get that - just get these players out of the squad and off the wage bill

If there are no decent offers on the table for the youngsters I'd be tempted to send them on loan to hopefully get regular minutes and boost their value.

The Xhaka situation has me :banghead: though. We just can't get rid of him!

Exactly. There's not too many positives to the market right now, but we do at least have the luxury of being able to axe 3x as many players as we need to recruit due to our bloated squad, so just the savings on wages alone could be enough to finance the deals we want to get done?

Willian, Xhaka, Kolasinac, Bellerin, one of Laca or Auba, Elneny, Torreira, Nketiah, Nelson, AMN and maybe even Cedric and Willock could all easily get the boot with only 3 or 4 needed coming the other way.

Didn’t watch it, but sounds like the story of our preseason so far: controlled large parts of the games; created some chances; either couldn’t put them away or no one in the middle.

Our better players are looking good, but we're still without a lot of them and we become average very quickly when we swap in the supporting cast. The striking problem isn’t going away either - a move there is starting to look essential now.

On the plus side Sambi and White sound like the absolute business - Sambi is ready now, no 6 month settling-in period needed, and White is showing that a CB of his profile was absolutely a priority. Mari and Holding look painfully limited when stood next to him, apparently.

Happy with the 3 moves we’ve made, but man! There’s a lot of work to get done in the next couple of weeks!

Yeah, it does feel like too much to happen in a couple of weeks now.

If it is a max. of 3 then one of them has to be a keeper - I can’t even begin to think about how fucked we are if we lose Leno! Question is who would you prioritise for the other 2 buys?

I think I’d go for the creative midfielder and a RB - I desperately want the striker, but adding another AM / 10 would solve a lot of problems with Laca and Auba, and I think a right-sided Tierney could be transformative for us. Whenever we lost Tierney last year we instantly looked a different, poorer side, but at least we had him available here and there - down the right we had nothing all season.
