That is a whisper I heard this morning. I think Arsenal could raise that bid...I think the real target for CM is M'Vila, but Rennes holding very firm and it'll take about €30m to get him by all accounts, which may be just that bit too much.

Early career
Squillaci began his football career playing for hometown club FC Seynois. While training at La Seyne, he was described by his coach Franck Seva as a "lovely, quiet boy".[6] Squillaci spent a ydecade at the club before moving to professional club Sporting Toulon in 1996 at the age of 16. He was originally a defensive midfielder and spent only one season in the club's youth academy, where he was supervised by former club player Christian Dalger.[5] Squillaci began the 1997–98 season playing on the club's reserve team. Following the firing of Albert Emon mid-season, he was replaced with Dalger. In March 1998, Dalger, subsequently, called up Squillaci to the first team and he made his professional debut on 7 March 1998 in a 1–0 league win over Nice appearing as a substitute for Victor Agali.[7] With Toulon in a relegation battle, Squillaci made substitute appearances in wins over Lille, Le Mans, and Lorient and defeats to Martigues and Red Star Paris.[8][9][10][10][11] Toulon ultimately finished the campaign in 20th place, which resulted in the club's relegation to the Championnat National, the third level of French football. Squillaci finished the season with five appearances in the league and one in the Coupe de France. Toulon, surprisingly, reached the Round of 16 in the latter competition.
[edit]Monaco
Due to not being under a professional contract while playing with Toulon, Squillaci was allowed to leave the club on a free transfer. He was recruited by Monaco and joined the club in 1998. Following his signing, Squillaci was inserted onto the club's reserve team, which was playing in the Championnat de France amateur, the fourth level of French football. He spent two years playing on the club's reserve team from 1998 to 2000 amassing over 45 appearances. After failing to establish himself under Claude Puel, Monaco officials announced that Squillaci would be heading to Corsica to join Ligue 2 club AC Ajaccio on loan. In two seasons with the club, Squillaci appeared in over 70 matches and helped the club achieve promotion to Ligue 2.
After Puel's departure and the appointment of new manager Didier Deschamps, Squillaci joined Monaco in 2002. In his first full season as a player for his side. Facing Real Madrid in the quarter finals of the 2003–04 UEFA Champions League, they progressed despite losing 4–2 in Madrid, due to the 3–1 victory in the return leg, thus advancing through to the semi-finals on the away goals rule where they beat Chelsea.[12][13][14] Their run came to an end when they suffered a 3–0 defeat to Portuguese giants FC Porto in the final.[15][16] Squillaci made 117 appearances for the club over six seasons.
[edit]Olympique Lyonnais
After the departure of Deschamps and a disappointing 11th place finish after years of European qualification, Squillaci opted to play elsewhere. He was linked to several clubs before inking a four-year deal with Olympique Lyonnais with Lyon's Sylvain Monsoreau heading the other way as compensation for Monaco.[17] Squillaci made his debut for Lyon in their opening match of the Ligue 1 season pairing with the Brazilian centre back Cris. Lyon would go on to dominate the season winning the league by an unprecedented 18 points. Squillaci went on to establish himself as the first choice centre back, along with Brazilian international Cris, at Lyon.
[edit]Sevilla
On the 14 July 2008, it was reported that Lyon had reached an agreement with Sevilla FC for the transfer of Squiallaci for a transfer fee of £6m.[18] Squillaci agreed to a three-year deal.[19] Six months after his departure from Sevilla, in January 2011, officials of Squillaci's second club Toulon confirmed that the club was seeking €150,000 in compensation from Spanish club Sevilla. The compensation Toulon is seeking is related to a trainers' fee, in which clubs who trained a player from ages 12–18 are guaranteed 5% of any future transfer fee. Sevilla has agreed to meet with the Toulon, but no agreement has been reached.[20]
[edit]Arsenal
Squillaci joined Arsenal F.C. on a three-year contract in the summer of 2010, taking the number 18 shirt, previously held by ex-Arsenal centre backs Mikaël Silvestre and Pascal Cygan. Following an injury to centre-back Thomas Vermaelen, Squillaci formed a central defensive partnership with fellow new signing, Laurent Koscielny. Squillaci scored his first goal for Arsenal in the Champions League group stage against Partizan Belgrade. His first Premier League goal came in a match against Stoke on 23 February 2011 following a cross from Nicklas Bendtner. During the 2010–11 season, Squillaci made 32 appearances and has scored 2 goals for the Gunners in all competitions.
[edit]International career

Squillaci has been a regular France international since 2004, making his debut in a friendly match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.[21] He currently has 21 caps for France.

Yeah I'd go with this.

I don't think people realise that we have no squad at all - we've sold or loaned a fuck load of players.

A couple of freebies with experience will be great even if it's just to make up the numbers and Carling Cup games.

That's so close to being insightful. Sadly, an insightful person might have suggested the fact that the playing field has changed thanks to the limitless resources of Chelsea and Man City and this has meant we've been left behind. If everyone else takes a step forward, you have taken a step backward, relatively.

11.43 Fulham have clinched an impressive deal to land defender Zdenek Grygera, according to The Sun. Boss Martin Jol is close to sealing a one-year deal with Juventus for £20,000-a-week. The Italians will pay the rest of his £120k-a-week wage.

Park Chu-young's agent has shed light on why the striker decided to go to Arsenal when he appeared set for a move to Lille, describing the opportunity to join the Gunners as too good to turn down.

The South Korea international had been given permission to leave Monaco this summer following their relegation from Ligue 1, and French champions Lille were close to finalising a deal.

However, it emerged over the weekend that Arsenal were set to sign Park, much to the frustration of Lille.

A transfer to the Emirates Stadium has still not been officially announced, but it is expected to go through before Wednesday night's deadline.

The 26-year-old's representative, Maurizio Morana, has now revealed exactly what happened to change his client's mind.

Military duty

Morana has also spoken about Park's excitement at the prospect of joining such a club at this stage of his career as he must return home for two years' national service before the age of 30.

"We could not imagine what happened. On Friday, Arsenal contacted Monaco to know if an agreement had been found with Lille about a transfer," Morana told France Football.

"As it was not the case, Arsenal started to negotiate, then asked to contact the player.

"Could you imagine how a player from Monaco could refuse such a club?

"As he should come back to his native Korea later in 2013 for military duties, this could be his last contract in Europe.

"When Arsene Wenger directly calls a player and asks him to join Arsenal, it is difficult to refuse."

Morana also rejected suggestions that Park's conduct demonstrated a lack of respect to Lille.

"We are sorry for the Lille officials who acted in a very professional way, but I can't agree when I hear Park has no sense of morals," the agent stated.

"There is no link with moral sense or honour, it is only football."

I've seen Mertersacker play quite a few times, and he's never impressed me. He's slow, his distribution is poor and positionally he's found wanting many times. Moreover, he's a defender who has to play extremely deep, because he's not the type who can nick the ball from an opposing striker and make interceptions. This may not be a bad thing, because the high line we play these days is extremely dangerous, but at the same time it allows the opposition more time in possession and prevents us from pinning them back in their half with the defenders pushing up.

Sure, he may be useful against teams like Stoke who play aerially, but against top quality sides like United, City, Liverpool etc, who keep the ball on the ground, I expect him to be like a rabbit caught in the headlights.

A poor signing IMO, and once against Wenger's gone for the cheap option rather than the option that would improve our defence appreciably (Cahill)

His lack of pace is seriously worrying. I remember a moment in the world cup when Rooney knocked the ball beyond him on the touchline and was just left for dead. He didn't even bother trying chase Rooney because he knows he has no chance of catching up. Football in the Premier League is played at a really high speed, so it'll be no surprise to see Mertersacker struggle badly to keep up.

No way we'll sign 3, I'll be delighted if we get 2 quality ones though.

Almunia must be on pretty high wages seeing as he was first choice for years. Can't imagine anyone would match those wages - maybe Wenger feels it's best to keep him on as 3rd/4th choice which to be fair will make him a decent backup option that far down the pecking order.

Arsenal Football Club can confirm they have agreed to sign striker Chu Young Park from AS Monaco.

The 26-year-old South Korea captain scored 25 times in 91 appearances for the French club during three seasons in Ligue 1.

The one-time Asian Young Footballer of the Year made his debut for the South Korea senior side at just 19, and played in both the 2006 and 2010 World Cups. He replaced the retired Ji Sung Park as captain of the national team earlier this year.

Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger said: “We are delighted to have signed Chu. He will add true quality to our attacking forces and will be a valuable addition to the squad.”

Chu Young Park said: "I am very honoured and I feel very happy to be at Arsenal. It is a dream to be here and I am really proud to be an Arsenal player. Now I just want to show how good I am and prove myself.

"In my opinion this is a great club, now I have to show what I can do on the pitch. I will do my best, I will never give up, I will show heart, I will give everything and I hope [the fans] will support me."

The deal is subject to the completion of formal registration processes.

Chu Young Park will wear the No 9 shirt at Arsenal. The striker prefers to be known as 'Ju' and will therefore have J. Y. Park as his shirt name.

Wenger said we'd sign only "super quality", but can anyone really say that Mertersacker, Park, Santos are super quality? And he can't use the excuse that they will go on to be great players in 5 years time, because they're all 25+, and if they haven't shown any evidence of super quality yet, they're not going to show it anytime in the future.

Someone should make him aware of that, can of worms right there if some fans decide to do a double entendre with the songs.

Perhaps we should 8-2 near every transfer window to spark some action :)

Sometimes a good spanking can be a wake up call.

This 8-2 has been the best thing to happen to this club for a while. Exposes things in a way that they cannot be hidden.

No excuses now Wenger. Go and spend.

The way things have been going, I'll take that. He should at least be better than Johan "what-has-happened-tou-you-panic-at-the-disco" Djourou.

Although I do think Djourou and Koscielny have the raw talents of being good defenders in the making, they have shown flashes of goodness, but something is just a bit wrong. Whether that is to do with the way we are setup and organized in terms of defensive coaching, or whether they just need more time to mature and develop I'm not sure.

The strangest one is Squillaci. I'd heard very good things about him at Lyon and Sevilla, ok not the fastest but he was a French international, experienced, supposed to be decent enough and positionally aware. But for us he's looked like he's never played professional football :?

He was nowhere near this bad at his other teams, which is leading me to believe the problem may be more with our setup than the players, as they all look shaky; even Veramelen at times although he has become more consistent.

Which is why signings will have a limited effect if we do not drastically improve the coaching side. Where's Martin Keown or Steve Bould when you need them, perhaps they should be the NO.2 to Wenger instead of Pat Rice, an attacking mindset and a defensive one balancing things out.
