Interestingly, the last time Real Madrid went through from a knock-out tie in the Champions League after losing the first leg was in 2002-03, against, you guessed it, Bayern Munich. They lost the first leg in Germany 2-1 in the quarter-final, but won 2-0 in the second leg. They won the competition that year.

It was 2001-2002, BBC.

Nicely poised at half-time for the tie. From the neutral perspective, it needed a narrow Bayern win.

bayern vs madrid is the final everyone wants to see anyway. its a shambles uefa only made it the semi's.

everyone knows exactly whats gonna happen if madrid-barca play each other, and it'll be another momentous occassion hampered by embarressing imbeciles making a mockery of our sport with their unsportsman behaviour.

bayern-madrid would have been a beast final.

McNamara That Ghost...
18-04-2012, 08:35 AM
There was plenty of unsportsman-like behaviour last night, mainly from Ribery though having said that. Or I suppose ultra gamesmanlike behaviour when you think about it. And it's not a shambles it was only the semi's, that's how they were drawn!

Every club has players that do it, Sagna was rolling about all over the place against the Spuds and Citeh. Drogba did it Busquets-style against Napoli. Pepe did it even after Arbeloa tried to get him to his feet (league game)! If the game is made a mockery of then it happens in most games that take place.

If it does take place between the majority of the players in a Clasico (which I imagine is the difference you are inferring), then maybe it would be enough to open UEFA's eyes to it, given it would be in a showpiece final.

The final I wanted to see involved Arsenal tbf. :ninja: Anyway I wouldn't call it a 'shambles', it's just how the draw is made and anyway, this way you get two games of the game you wanted to see

I think the Clasico games are great, very funny stuff. You can guarantee someone is going to go mental.

Joker
18-04-2012, 10:52 AM
Ronaldo has done it in big games but I think it's clear that Messi is the more all round footballer. Ronaldo these days doesn't seem as involved in the buildup and in the creation of play as he used to. His goalscoring record is amazing so you can't argue with that, but with Messi it's more than about the goals. Look at his assists this season (he's got 25 assists this season, therefore contributing a total of 88 goals to Barca this season)

You do realise thats because Barca are a one man team?

Everything goes through Messi whereas at Real, its more of a team game. They know they dont need to rely on Ronaldo every game to get them a result therefore they dont look for him as much as Bar****s do Messi.

Well you can't prove that really can you? Maybe it's just that Messi himself takes charge of games more often, by demanding the ball and dropping really deep to try to instigate attacks, rather than passively waiting for someone else to set him up for a goal.

McNamara That Ghost...
18-04-2012, 11:17 AM
I wouldn't call them a one man team - I mean for one there is most of the World Cup and European Championship winning side behind him and for another they've scored something like 104 goals without Messi's contribution this season but with Messi there, it takes them to another level and he is the one that often makes the difference when they most need it (after that, Iniesta).

Cripps_orig
18-04-2012, 11:17 AM
Well you just have to watch them play for proof.

Their tactic is simple but effective.

Without the ball - make the ref get it back for them. This might be by awarding phantom free kicks or whatever. Point is Barca get the ball back

With the ball - Xavi and Iniesta pass to each other 21938103981230912830923809238120474 times. They are very good at what they do. Opposition and fans alike are bored fuckless and then they pass to Messi and he scores/assists

Very simple.

Watch them tonight and it will happen that way for sure

Would be great so see him realise his full potential under Mourinhos management instead of becoming a Cesc/Merida/Diaby/Malz/Rodriguez/Bischoff/that German dude we bought in January thats no one has seen etc etc under Wenger.

It's obviously not too likely but I know I'd be kicking myself if I didn't take it - when is the last time you saw a 2-0 home win for Chelsea with Lampard FGS at 150/1? The bookies obviously know their stuff but I think they've underestimated the Chelsea likelihood of winning. But Maccy's right - in hindsight betting against Barca scoring a goal was pretty silly.

bayern vs madrid is the final everyone wants to see anyway. its a shambles uefa only made it the semi's.

everyone knows exactly whats gonna happen if madrid-barca play each other, and it'll be another momentous occassion hampered by embarressing imbeciles making a mockery of our sport with their unsportsman behaviour.

bayern-madrid would have been a beast final.

Tom Henning Ovrebo, the referee at the centre of Chelsea’s controversial 2009 Champions League semi-final defeat to Barcelona, has admitted he still receives death threats from angry Blues fans but no longer takes them seriously.

The Norwegian referee turned down numerous Chelsea appeals for a penalty on the ill-tempered night at Stamford Bridge, in a game which saw Andres Iniesta's last-minute goal spectacularly knock the London side out of the competition.

Tempers boiled over following the equaliser, with Didier Drogba and Michael Ballack both angrily confronting Ovrebo. Death threats had been sent to the Norwegian referee following the game, and he has admitted he still receives them almost three years on.

"I still get a few death threats, but they go straight into the garbage box," he told The Times.

"I don’t take them seriously, although sometimes I wonder about the people who send them.

"Just yesterday I got an e-mail from a Chelsea fan saying he wanted to kill me and my family."

Ovrebo, who continues to referee in the Norwegian leagues, has conceded he made some wrong decisions on the night, though he says he is pleased with the way he and his fellow officials kept their calm.

He continued: "Everyone who knows the laws of the game knows I should have done things differently, but that’s the life of a referee.

"In a strange way, I was actually satisfied with the way we all managed to keep calm in a tense situation."

So he admits he was corrupt then

Interesting

"Before I was going up and down and sometimes a little bit lost in the important moment because I wanted to do everything. Now, my team-mates are more experienced than me and I trust them - they have told me to be calm, to stay in my position."

I think that's fair enough from Cesc. We knew he was going to be the small fish in the big pond - and saying he has improved 'tactically' is about the best possible spin he can put on being insignificant.

But, if Arsenal's days are about to get better, I hope he'll soon realise that he wasn't as big a fish in our pond as he thought he was.

Well Obviously the team was bulit around him, where as in Barca its bulit around Messi so he has to work twice as hard to get in that team, where as there was no way he'd be left out of our team tbh.

But Cesc is a Barca player now and is free to say what he likes.

Would not be suprising if this was one of Barca's ways to get to RVP though. you know how they are.

I think keeping a clean sheet would be very, very good for them. They're going to get battered in the 2nd leg, but we nearly pubbed our way to a win last year and they are capable of doing the same.

Chelsea v Barcelona (1945 BST)
BBC Sport's Tom Rostance reports: "The threat of Lionel Messi hangs over every game he plays, with the Barcelona striker netting an incredible 34 goals in 21 games so far in 2012. Chelsea boss Roberto di Matteo knows the Argentine must be stopped, but insists that there is more to Barca than their number 10. 'It has to be a collective team effort and responsibility to stop him,' Di Matteo said. 'But if you just think about stopping one guy, they've got nine others who can hurt you.'"
