Then AVB hands in his resignation.

And we win our match.

We only (!) have to be 4-0 at full time. Then it's "up for grabs". I'm sure the team will be up for it. What can go wrong?

In an ideal world, we'd chuck some kids on, rest Van Persie and whatever other key players we have left and just bend over. But we'll probably end up trying because of the fear of our fans calmly voicing their discontent at the final whistle in a civilised manner.

Coney
22-02-2012, 12:34 PM
If we were 4-0 at full time (OK, OK) then I think we would be in good shape to go on and win the tie. AC Milan might do another Istanbul (or almost Newcastle-Arsenal) and after a big lead halfway through, allow the other team to draw level, killing the confidence and panicking to defeat.

Syn
22-02-2012, 12:36 PM
I'm not willing to take that risk. We should try to go 9-0 up just in case.

Marc Overmars
22-02-2012, 12:36 PM
It will be a strange atmosphere, especially if we aren't at least leading at HT. If it becomes evident that we don't even have a 2% chance, then the players better not misplace any passes because they'll be gassed otherwise.

Coney

Oh - I'd play the kids. We are written off, no-one expects us to go through, Wenger's first choice players are dead or just drifting and the youngsters would at least have a go. And the Meeeeeeelan people would not have a dossier on how they play so they would be lesss prepared. (I think that was why we used to do OK in the first few rounds of the CC, playing 'who the fuck is that' in the midfield).

Wonder what Shaqiri will do against his future club.
Basel attacker Xherdan Shaqiri is eagerly anticipating the first leg of his side's Champions League round of 16 tie at home against Bayern Munich.

The Switzerland international, who will leave his current club to join the Bavarians at the end of the season, feels that the Bundesliga giants are favourites to progress as he considers them to be the best club in Germany.

"Bayern are the favourites, they will come to Basel to win. They will play very differently from how they recently did in Freiburg. Bayern are, and for me remain, the best club in Germany," Shaqiri said to Bild.

The winger recently spoke with Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes on the phone and did not let the opportunity to discuss Wednesday's encounter pass by.

"I asked Mr. Heynckes: 'Will you not be mad at me if I score a goal against Bayern in the round of 16?' He laughed and then made a joke about it. It was a very nice conversation."

Football tbh, me the cl has been dire for sometime, (not because were shite in it) But i don't get that excitment with it any more. I used to enjoy it from the group games till the final. Not anymore. I even thought the Atmosphere in last seasons final was not that great for a CL final.

Anyway, this obsession with a particular brand of 'excitement' has come from the brainless pace at which the Premier League is played.

Shame that it's so predictable that they'll win the CL. No-one can stop them unless Iniesta, Xavi have off days. We had a pretty good go last year and got them worried. Realistically Real Madrid are the only team that are capable. Would've liked to see man utd have another go - see what fergie could change from getting violated in the final last year.

I wonder how people in Spain feel about Barcelona (relatively) struggling in the league. In England we think of the league as more important here than the CL. And certainly from my perspective, I think the league is always the best measure of how good a team is than cup competitions. But I get the feeling the CL is, by far, more important than La Liga. Or else a bigger deal would be made of Mourinho and Real Madrid's performances this season. As an outsider, the only thing I've read is how Real Madrid always lose to Barcelona in head-to-head meetings and so the league doesn't matter.

I think it has, conveniently, worked out well for both clubs this season. Barcelona will (probably) take the CL and the head-to-head meetings and they'll claim to be the best. And Mourinho will leave claiming he won the league comfortably and so his job is done.

I think that's probably right. It's not just winning the Champions League that would keep Barcelona in the same breath (of being the best), it'd be that they had done it back-to-back. I think La Liga does have importance though, Barcelona are still many behind Real Madrid's total!

Think for the neutral it would be a good think to make the league better, because maybe them always winning it is boring. However in the CL imo they are the best team and rightly favourites tbh.

For Barca fans they'd be pissed but not too much if they won the cl. Jose not winning the CL is a bigger disater then Barca not winning the league.
