Taking the missus to this. We have a very mixed record with her in attendance, so I apologise in advance if we balls it up.

2-0.

Herbert_Chapman's_Zombie

If we do it will be because we insist on continuing with that Colombian Failure in goal for Champions League games

Lucas Perez, Coquelin, Ox, Gibbs, Gabriel could all do with game time.

Kano
17-10-2016, 10:49 AM
Didn't Ospina play a key part in securing our biggest point so far in the CL?

Herbert_Chapman's_Zombie
17-10-2016, 10:54 AM
Didn't Ospina play a key part in securing our biggest point so far in the CL?

I don't think any of the saves he made were particularly spectacular or would have been beyond Cech to make, they were indicative of poor finishing from Cavani not really anything else.

One of the saves he made resulted from his usual poor ball distribution

Kano
17-10-2016, 11:33 AM
Which reinforces the point, as he done what Cech could've in your eyes, so he's generally a good keeper. There's no requirement for spectacular saves, few keepers manage that only a weekly basis, but as long as you stop the shots, then job done. We've seen a few mistakes from Cech in the time he's been with us too.

Give me a choice between the two and I'd pick Cech for his experience but there isn't light years between the two.

Herbert_Chapman's_Zombie
17-10-2016, 11:39 AM
The difference is that Cech is far less likely to make mistakes, be bullied from set pieces to put us in trouble with poor goal kicks and clearances

Every time Ospina has had a run in the side, every goal we have conceded you have to look and think at the very least he could have done better

Kano
17-10-2016, 11:53 AM
Looking at the PSG goal alone shows you're being too harsh with that theory.

Herbert_Chapman's_Zombie
17-10-2016, 11:58 AM
ok i'll qualify my remark and say practically every goal.

Kano
17-10-2016, 12:04 PM
Could you perhaps make it even more vague, just for the sake of clarity?

Herbert_Chapman's_Zombie
17-10-2016, 12:22 PM
or i could list every game he's played where we have conceded goals and a more competent goalkeeper would have done better

From January 11th to the end of the season in May 2015, Ospina was in goal for every league game

We conceded 12 goals in 18 games which was a pretty good record (but far more credit to our defence) but about 10 of those goals were preventable but for Ospina.

Both of Harry Kanes goals at White Hart Lane for example were Ospina's fault and his shocking punches often put the ball back into the danger area and created constant spurs pressure.

Punching too often, rashly coming out of goal, palming the ball into his own net....poor distribution on top of this made the job for our defence even more difficult and it is a testament to how well our defence performed that we conceded so few...because they were a clean up crew for his shortcomings.

When he plays for Colombia it's often the same story....plus i see him concede so many goals at his near post.

Sczesny is a muppet make no mistake, but the reason Ospina is the back up and not him is because of Szczesny's attitude not because Ospina is a better keeper.

Frankly if Cech isn't playing i'd much rather us play Emiliano Martinez

Kano
17-10-2016, 12:38 PM
That's a tough one. You've only picked out two goals and robbed him of any credit for a good defence record. Hard to argue against such resolute evidence your honour.

Herbert_Chapman's_Zombie
17-10-2016, 12:48 PM
I gave one example but if you want others

I could give you the example of the games against swansea and west brom where he helped the ball into the goal

The goal charlie austin scored against us at loftus road where his positioning was poor, his positioning was equally poor for the Ander Herrera goal in the 1-1 draw against United at Old Trafford

the goal where he pushed the ball back into the path of Glenn Murray against Crystal Palace

The goal Stephen Quinn headed in against us for Hull where he was statuesque

And those are just off the top of the head. I praise the defence because like I say they had to put out a lot of fires which his poor distribution, over punching and inability to claim caused.

Herbert_Chapman's_Zombie
17-10-2016, 12:50 PM
Even against PSG he caused just as many problems as he solved, came out too rashly far too often and Cavani went round him only to find an empty net.

His lack of height meant that he had to be bailed out aerially, and his lucklustre distribution just invited PSG pressure onto us again.

Kano
17-10-2016, 12:53 PM
I just looked at one of those, the Stephen Quinn goal, laughed and realised there's no point arguing against bias. Guess we all have it about some players, Arsenal or otherwise.

Herbert_Chapman's_Zombie
17-10-2016, 01:02 PM
It's not bias, he reacted too slowly....it was a powerful header but wasn't travelling quick enough that he couldn't have got a hand to it. No it's not a massive goalkeeping error, but it's savable and like i said my assertion was that most of the goals we conceded with Ospina between the sticks i would argue that at the very least he could have done better with.

although in fairness, the reason i think Sczesny and Cech would have saved those is because they have longer arms and are five inches taller than the Colombian

Let's be rational though, we know how Stubborn Wenger is over players, he played him in goal for half a season and if he was in anyway convinced by Ospina he wouldn't have bought Petr Cech it's really as simple as that.

Ospina isn't good enough for Arsenal, not even as a backup

Keown is soooooo wrong. No need to keep searching for more goals he says. Well in fact there is. When the goals are there you take them. Because it makes the crowd happy. Gives the players confidence. We're under no pressure here. Keown had forgotten what football is supposed to be about.

Shooting and crossing usually needs a bit of action on the ball so it's not just a case of lobbing it. But these guys should definitely be good enough to deliver quality more times than not. Maybe they're not as good as they think they are. Except for Ozil. He's definitely that good.

I can understand more when it's a shot or a cross, I still think they should be better than they often are but the ball can be moving, they can be under pressure from defenders. But a corner...the ball is stationary (or possibly stationery, never know which is which tbh). Surely they should be able to deliver a corner with some consistency.

I said that wasn't Ozil's game specifically, by that I meant it seemed a bit churlish to pan him and say we should be getting rid of him for not getting enough goals when he had the highest assist rate in Europe (which is his primary function).

And i thought it was particularly harsh when so many of our other midfielders weren't chipping in with goals and weren't exactly contributing much else on the pitch.

But if he's making goals and scoring goals.....all the better.

This wasn’t specially for you, but going back on this, it’s good to see Ozil scoring more goals. Sometimes he epitomises the ‘tippy tappy’ style and can be quite passive. That’s what annoys me most and even after the Burnley game, you could see what I meant about his style of play against a stubborn defence. If he has a taste for goals, he’d be so well rounded and so much harder to stop. I’m yet to see the game and highlights but can’t get too carried away. I have no idea who we just played but regardless, it’s good to see we hammered them and hear that Wenger told the team not to ease off during half time. He’s often been accused of telling the team to slow it down but that wasn’t the case yesterday. As long as everyone keeps improving and adding that little extra, we’re in a good space.

I agree to the extent that Ozil is going to be more effective in an open game like the one we played against Chelsea and arguably last night where whatever one says about the quality of the opposition it was actually refreshing to see a small side like that, that wanted to play football.

And I would agree that Ozil was guilty of what you have said last night in the first half, i was incredibly exasperated when he had the chance to lead a break and just inexplicably slowed down and passed the ball sideways which led to a two minute keep ball exhibition along the centre circle which impresses literally no-one. However i think the extent of his ability to pick a pass is useful even in games like Burnley where they quite understandably play ten men behind the ball, because he is able to see players make runs out of the corner of his eye and is able to find them with passes and open up space where before there was none.

Taking on the ball running at the defence and lashing home like he did for his first goal last night was quite uncharacteristic and i will always welcome any player getting more goals, and if that gives him confidence to take on chances more himself when he is in the best position so to do.....i'm all for it.

I don't think Wenger gets on to the players enough about their performances. He's notorious for saying nothing at half time until the last few minutes when the team are due to step out again for the next half. I think he needs to speak more often to refocus the team.

I really need to see the goals he scored. If he ran at the defence and smashed one in, I can't wait to see it. I've always thought he's capable of more because it's not as if he hasn't got a bit of pace or the ball control to be more aggressive with the ball and force the issue when we look flat.

I saw the goal Sanchez scored. Slight worried these guys are playing to put themselves in the shop window.
