Costa is injured (or has been injured for the last 2 weeks) and is a major doubt.

They lost 3-0 yesterday to Real Sociedad but they can afford to as they won’t win the league, are in the CL places and have a semi final to look forward to.

We on the other hand are still shit, can’t defend for toffee and make individual mistakes all the time.

Head says 1-3, heart says 2-1.

Wenger on team news for Thursday: "Jack had a training session today & he looked positive so he has a good chance to be available. Özil was sickness [flu] so I cannot tell you much more about that. We will have to see how he recovers*tomorrow. But Mkhitaryan won’t be available" https://t.co/DA389ogpQM

Ozil gets flu a couple of times a month, at least. Does the club seriously believe fans buy that? I wonder what the deal is? Ozil gets to choose when he plays? Gets to pick his games?

We're hardly favourites and yesterday's performance did nothing to encourage me. The chances WHam had in the first half would have been ut away by Atletico.

The thing with Atletico is that they don’t concede many goals, especially in Europe (over two legs, they have knocked out really strong Barca an Bayern sides, they know how these games work) and it will have to take 200 percent effort and concentration from our lot to stand a chance. We make too many errors and always concede goals, which is almost the opposite of Atletico.

They won't defend like Roma. I mean they'll actually defend. But positive, fast and forward looking football is still what we need because that other thing we do, the tip tap, is a certain recipe for a loss. Trouble is, Wenger hasn't actually left yet so we'll start with the wrong tactics and have to make our way from there.

We don’t have anywhere near the same guile and inclination to make quick, direct passes. Not to mention the pace of Liverpool’s front three and the individual brilliance of someone like Salah. We haven’t really got the players to replicate their approach in all honesty, our players are wired in a completely different way.

It’s probably going to be scrappy but hopefully we give it a good go and don’t shit ourselves. That’s the main difference between us and Liverpool, they don’t have any fear and that allows them to play with so much freedom. I’m hoping the Wenger news has at the very least inspired them to play with the shackles off.

Even if we had the players to do it, Atletico won't be as dumb as to play a high line against us at the Emirates like Roma did at Anfield. They'll sit back and attempt to soak up the pressure .... it's what they specialise in.

Mark my words, this will be a low scoring affair. Settled by a goal or two.

I can't remember which of the one million podcasts I listen that I heard it from....but it was suggested that Atletico would actually really go for us tomorrow. I tend to think they will simply manage the game in stages. I think in the first 10/15 minutes they will probably try to catch us cold and come at us (as their homework on us will encourage them to do) and then if they get an away goal (the importance of which we know well), we will of course need to come out and recover, by which point they will sit back a bit.

I would rather we really go for them for the most part. Our home record is decent and we will need to score a few, as I don't think we can actually tailor our strategy to rely upon not allowing them to get an away goal.

A little like Liverpool last night, I'm happy for us to weather the initial storm early on (if they really come at us) before going for the jugular.

Marc Overmars
25-04-2018, 03:26 PM
They have enough clever and technically brilliant players to be able to run rings around our porous midfield regardless of how we set up. We will need to make the most of the little bursts of play we always manage to find, can't afford any inefficiency in front of goal here. Getting the ball into Laca early to stop him wandering deep and out wide to collect it would be a good start.

They won't have to "catch us" cold. We'll be lying there at the start, freezing, ready to be walked over. We'll probably need to go a goal or two down before we start playing. If things go to typical script. Would be lovely if we came charging out of the gate but we do that maybe once a season.

gosh this is depressing - the West Ham game, and Wenger's comments since, have knocked any potential wind out of our sails for this - the players showed no real sign of playing for him on Sunday really and without Auba even on the bench we really have no plan B whatsoever - or much of a plan A really... :upset:

Pretty much, his career with us doesn't end in 2005 and you're right, but he is bitter, he obviously doesn't think 6th place and not winning away in 2018 in the league is too bad (that's ignoring everything else). No grace whatsoever.

Have no respect for the guy, he could have gone gracefully but no instead he has a dig at the fans, then tells us it wasn't his choice to announce it, none of that matters of course, trouble is he's bitter because he still thinks he should be in the job.

Got a nice 10 million pay off though, he should be happy given the horror show he's put on this season.

This game is really important and winning this competition will decide which manager we get. A top notch manager will probably be saying "yes il come but only if you get CL footy' and the board will know that. That's why we need the fans to be the 12th man and create a good atmosphere. The question is though whether our players can all of a sudden step up and cut out the errors after under performing all season. you can't just decide to turn up and thats why i have a feeling we will be beaten over legs, Atletico have a much better team, system and manager.

Honestly, I don't trust our defence to keep a clean sheet. Plus to get at Atletico you need to use the wide areas and we don't have the players to do that ..... we're far too centre heavy as usual.

This is so true, a very important couple of games v Atletico. We'll probably get totally spanked by United at the weekend as we rest players.
