Yes, I've always been able to separate club and country. Kane is an England player right now, not a Spurs one.
One of my Spud friends of FB is "giving it large" a bit though because 3 of the penalty takers last night were English :blah:

I felt that way before the tournament but, come on, they're in the semi-finals and given the other teams in it we actually have a chance here.
Head still says we're going to mess this up but I really enjoyed the way they played on Saturday. I'm actually enjoying the way they play and quite honestly other than a few key individuals I don't really know who they all play for anyway.

I’ve found it easier to warm to them because there are a lot of young players involved now, players who don’t have a history of tournament failure and underachievement. Yeah it’s a bit annoying that the key players are Spuds but as I said the other day, the England team has always contained rival players (and other players you don’t necessarily rate) so that’s nothing new.
It would be nice if more Arsenal players were involved but either you support England or you don’t, who the players are shouldn’t matter really.
Fuck the Spuds, these players are representing England and if they want to piggy back on the success of this World Cup then let them, we’ll only be laughing because they don’t have any success of their own to revel in.

I think this bunch of players is refreshing. They all seem to be proud to wear the shirt, I didn't see that from a lot of our 'Golden generation' and before. When Rooney was asked that quickfire thing, WC or CL, without a stutter, he said CL. Never liked him for England after that.
I don't care which clubs they play for, they are there to represent us, the English, and they get my support. Like Overmars, I wish we had more Arsenal in the team, but we don't, as he says, you either support England or you don't.

The most important thing for me is that it seems like he’s got the players to enjoy representing England again. The so called golden generation hated it and that was a major factor for the consistent failure. Definitely bodes well for the future having a team who don’t see playing for England as a chore they could do without.

Don't be so hard on yourself.
I'm sure a lot of it is stage managed but I don't care if they're the sorts who would help an old lady across the road, what I like about them is the way they're playing - I'm enjoying watching them - and they showed some balls against Colombia. After the late equaliser they looked mentally gone in the first half of extra time and I feared the worst but they picked it up in the second half and won the penalties. On Saturday we were good, actually good. Against a Sweden side who aren't up to much, admittedly, but how many times have we seen an England team either lose or make very hard work of a game they should have won on paper. I'm looking forward to Wednesday, actually looking forward to it. We might cock it up - head says we probably will - but whatever the outcome they have by far exceeded my expectations in this tournament.
I agree Harry Kane is the only really world class player we have but I don't agree the other 10 aren't any good. There's some good players in there, I'd honestly no idea about Pickford before this tournament but he's made some great saves - the one at the start of the second half of the Sweden game was massive, that goes in and it's 1-1 and a different game.
So yeah. I like them as a team, I like how they've played, they're a team I can get behind. I've no idea what they're like as individuals and I don't care. I like The Beatles but by all accounts John Lennon was quite the c***. But that's OK, I don't have to go for a drink with him, I just enjoy the music. I don't have to invite the England players round for dinner, I'm just enjoying watching them.

Yes. That. And again, maybe it's all about appearances but they are important and that is how it seems. Too many England players in the past seemed to almost resent playing for England as though it was an inconvenient distraction from their club careers.

I understand if people aren’t enthusiastic about the players but I don’t think supporting a team should be dependent on what players they have. There are a host of Arsenal players I haven’t been particularly fond of for a few seasons but my support for them and the team is still there. As I said, you ether support England or you don’t. If you don’t that is absolutely fine but for me personally I’ve always wanted to see a successful national team.
Unsurprisingly a lot of match going England fans tend to be supporters of lower league clubs, fans who aren’t caught up and conflicted with these trivial Premier League rivalries.
SMatthews
09-07-2018, 10:48 PM
All of the Arsenal stuff is heavily manufactured and their ‘banter’ is just as false. The real truth is fans mostly only ‘like’ players if they are performing well for the club. And there’s no problem with that. It’s the same for England. This isn’t a personality contest but a competition to win and if they get close, as they are, then you like the team as an entity, not for the individuals who make it up. Our decisions about whether we like or dislike players is based on what we see on a football pitch in most cases. It’s hardly the best way to judge someone’s character.
It’s the same rubbish used by fans who say “I’d get behind the team if they give their all.” Except they wouldn’t. It’s as much of a cop out as blaming the personality of footballers on why you can’t support them. Losing a load of games doesn’t necessarily mean you’re not giving your all as it can just as easily mean you don’t have the quality to win them. But losing a lot of games would see fans turn against the team, no matter how hard they may be ‘trying’.

Feeling slightly sick at the thought we could be in a World Cup Final
Yeh, I know they get media training, the media does try to trip them up into saying something that they can make a sensation out of though, so the younger players especially need that. Mostly, they all seem to be low key. I don't have the same feeling that we're going through as I did in the other matches, I don't know if that's because there is more at stake now. I'm sure I felt 50-50 v Sweden as well. Maybe I just don't feel as excited yet, that may come as the hours go by.
I feel more sick at the thought that we don't make it having come so far.

Yes, there is a school of thought that it's worse losing in the semi-final than the final, at least you got there.
Sweden I felt was 50:50. Today...dunno, we definitely have a decent chance. Heart says we're going through :scarf: , head says we're going to mess it up :upset:

Third and fourth place play offs are so flat, we need to be there to the end.

Yeah. I don't think I bothered watching it in 1990. Who cares?

Martinez was bigging it up last night. 3rd, 4th? you still didn't get to the final.

Interesting. What do you do that you'd have to book a Sunday off?
Vicar? ;)

:good:
I made a right bloody mess of the start of this world cup (work trip then a holiday) but got into it more in the group stages, it's helped that England have exceeded all reasonable expectations.
Going to see Paul Simon on Sunday so have made a mess of that too but he's on in the evening so I'm guessing they'll show it on the screens before.
