Lampard's by far the most tolerable English pundit. He can string sentences together as a bonus.

Would have started Loftus-Cheek instead of Henderson at the base of the midfield tbh. Henderson is going to be completely redundant in a game like this.

Fair enough. Instead of "I don't know much about them" Shearer then.

England are number one in the Preparation world rankings.

They also top the 'Best Press Conference Soundbites' and 'Most Happy And Relaxed Squad' rankings.

Not sure what relevance that has to substance on a football pitch though.

He's already got enough attacking players there. Loftus-Cheek plays a similar role to Alli.

If your point is that England don't have a midfield anyway so they might as well throw all the attackers on, then you're probably right.

More that Tunisia aren't going to offer much going forwards and you much rather have a technically superior player like Loftus-Cheek who can unlock a defence there instead of a clogger like Henderson.

Wenger

This was a shocker, his job was to spot talent, no young player is a world beater but you should be able to spot a talented player, Spurs stuck with him so can't have been as bad a TEG said, yes he went on loan but most young players go on loan to get experience when they're young.

Saw Wenger was criticising the defending in the Brazil match, makes me laugh the guy doesn't have a clue about defending as demonstrated by the teams he built and yet he sees himself as some sort of expert, can't take him seriously, if he knew anything abot defending we wouldn't have been such an embarrassment at the back.

He only bought Stepanovs after his players played a practical joke on him

That was a good performance by England. They came out on fire and kept plugging away after the penalty right to the end.

That will give them confidence and a young team with confidence makes for dangerous opposition.

They did well to cope with the heat. Supposedly it was over 20 degrees. What England totally lacked in technical ability they more than made up for in tattoos. Some fine examples on display last night. Some of the best you'll see in the modern game. Sterling was maybe the one outstanding disappointment. He set his stall out and ran his socks off with pace and power, but only managed to get not one single thing right on the night.

A bit sad to see Tunisia resort to diving. Keown did very well to spot this and comment on it regularly throughout the match. A big improvement as he's missed this in every other game he's ever commentated on.

It is interesting that just before kick off it was apparently "perfect weather for football" but by the time these professional athletes were struggling to move, after 50 minutes, it was impossible heat and humidity.

There’s no excuse they won’t stoop to.

I thought after the Iceland disaster it was commonly accepted that we’re just not very good. Clearly not.

Yuk to that video. Fair play to Kane though, if that late chance had dropped to either Sterling or Lingard neither would have scored. He took it calmly with a cool head.

Sterling became far more influential after 68 mins. And there could be a very good reason why Lingard is playing at this level, it's possible.

They'd fluffed their lines all match.

I knew in advance the match would be dire beyond compare, so I amused myself by watching Sterling. Quite literally, he got nothing right. Nothing. It's hard to imagine there's nobody knocking around the country who is better than this guy. Every time he got the ball or took up his goal-hanging position he fucked it up. The first goal should have been disallowed because he was offside, so he could have fucked up the result too. His one strength is his comprehensive technical inability. He's so useless on the ball he ends up being super unpredictable. He doesn't have a clue what to do, so nobody else has a clue either. His passes deflect all over the place, his random running could see him end up anywhere, his clinical lack of ability in front of goal means anything could happen - usually something very funny but also unintended consequences like mis-hitting the ball vaguely towards the goal, close enough so there's a statistical possibility of it going in. The most hopeless player I have ever seen in an England shirt.

Did Lineker call that exceptional last night or was I hallucinating?

Finally seen some highlights although edited so annoyingly it was impossible to get much of a feel for how we played. Looked like we made enough decent chances.
Lingard though
Embarrassing.

Meh. We so rarely win the first game of a major tournament, I'll take it.

What was embarrassing about Lingard? Had one snapshot brilliantly saved, was unlucky with the one that hit the post. Sterling was the embarrassing one, I thought.

As discussed the highlights were edited in a way which makes it hard to evaluate performances well, but one assessment of his performance was:

"Lively on the ball but missed an abundance of chances"

Sounds about right from what I saw, some of the finishing looked...Welbeckesque.

That describes a lot of players, but I think it's harsh to tar Lingard with that particular brush. Stones, Sterling and Rashford all missed easier chances than he did, like I said he was quite unlucky as opposed to incompetent like the rest

Fair enough. I just noticed it more with Lingard from the rubbish highlights I saw.
It seemed liked a pretty incompetent display up front, otherwise looked like a #decent performance.

Yeah, looked like he didn't know what foot to go with then decided neither and just let it hit him.
