Second half of the season, can we make it to the magic six games won figure?

Probably not.

Chelsea and United at home, perfect chance for Arteta to announce himself as the real deal.

Mac76
29-12-2019, 09:47 AM
With Chelsea misfiring a bit (although most notably at home rather than away), we ought to win this if we play more directly as in the first half at Bournemouth, but as always the defemce is the big worry

What have we got left to choose from at the back? 2 available CBs and 1 available fullback (and that’s if you class AMN as a fullback)? Guess the defence pretty much picks itself.

Really hope the week Arteta has had to work with these guys has been enough to at least drill some positional discipline into them, because we know they’re not the best defenders, and some of them have got to be getting tired now.

We have a lot of injuries. That bench is pretty bad.
Maybe 2 out of that starting XI are nailed on starters, and a couple more might have a 50/50 shot of starting with everyone fit. At least half of that team are backups and squad players though - this is gonna be tough.

How the hell is Nelson getting games ahead of Pepe?

How the hell is Nelson getting games ahead of Pepe?

I can only think he's still suffering from that kicking from Cresswell, i can't believe it isn't that he's not bothering in training surely...?

Master Splinter
29-12-2019, 01:49 PM
Even though Nelsojn's end product is non-existant at the moment, his overall game is much better than Pepe's. You can't ask for change at the club and then be upset when a struggling, flaky liability is left on the bench. Until he's fully settled, he's best as an impact sub.

We've got a lot of injuries at the moment, especially at the back, so it's extra harsh for Arteta playing so many tough games in a hectic period.

McNamara That Ghost...
29-12-2019, 01:55 PM
I don't agree that Pepe is a liability, not when you consider he's the reason we have won the two games in 20 or whatever it is.

Also, I haven't seen enough from Nelson to suggest he isn't a liability.

Mac76
29-12-2019, 02:55 PM
Really good so far, shame about Chambers, especially as it means playing mustafi, but we just look so much better overall

HT whistle came at the right time though, chelski were starting to look dangerous

Chelski have been so cynical and should have anpther yellow or two, really annoying to see them break up some really good moves

Would like us to be 2 up but let's hope Arteta can get them going again for the second half

And i love the way we're cheering every hoofed clearance

Thierrymon
29-12-2019, 02:55 PM
Enjoyed that half. Another goal would be useful to get early as I could see us getting nervy towards the end of the game.

Niall_Quinn
29-12-2019, 02:56 PM
That's the first disciplined half of football I've seen from this team in... years?

Nothing spectacular. Got the passing going. Kept the shape. Players were moving to give the guy on the ball an option. Kept it simple. Booted it out of defence when required (mostly). Put as much into the defensive side of the game as the attacking.

Ozil superb. He really is a cut above everyone else on that pitch.

So glad the manager stuck with Nelson. The kid had a stinker last time out, but he was trying. So the manager says, give it another go, and now we have a proper option on the right that's giving the chavs a ton of problems.

Arteta doing exactly what is required. Getting the basics right. One game after another, a little improvement each time. That's how we'll do it.

Actually impressed by an Arsenal performance. And at Christmas time when we're usually getting our arses handed to use.

Can we keep it up in the second half?

We can't slate the team for not being able to maintain normal football for 90 minutes. We haven't played normal football in a decade. This is all new to us. Eventually, after hundreds or thousands of hours on the training pitch, we'll be back to normal. Let's not slaughter them 2 games into it.

Many positives in this match. Sure, we lost. But we actually had a shape. For me, that's massively important.

And the ref was the ultimate cunt. Booked our player when he should have been sending their goalscorer off. What can you do about that? No VAR there, I notice. It'll all be disaster in the media, but don't believe it. We beat that chav bunch of fouling cunts and we beat them well, at football at least. We lost at the other stuff, but then again, we aren't chavs.

I don’t think we did enough in trying for a second goal. Goals turn games - as today showed after the Leno howler. You can’t just bank on seeing things out with so long to go. A commendable effort from us but the bottom line is that it’s getting pretty desperate now. 1 win in 15. 4 home defeats on the bounce and 6 points above the drop zone.

He's had 2 games dude. And both have shown improvement. What are you expecting? This is going to be a long, long process. The damage Wenger did is total. It killed every aspect of the club. It can't be fixed in the short term.

Feel sick to the stomach with the result, but there are definitely signs Arteta can turn this around.

I'm more angry with Raul and co not being more decisive on Emery when it was clear he was done.

Oh I’m not knocking Arteta. The 2 games have had some encouraging signs but we need results. Now.

You're not going to be on Letters Christmas card list saying things like that.

Sometimes I think Letters IS Wenger.

I think he officially started working with the players last Sunday, so that’s 7 days. Of those 7 days, 2 were match days and one was Christmas Day, so it’s not a great deal of time to affect change - not with a squad (and club) with as many fundamental problems as we have, and with as many injuries as we have in one area. Happy with the signs I’ve seen so far...

We had a shape to our play. Can you even imagine it in your wildest dreams? I'm settling for that. If I see the same again next week them I'll be excited. I'm right back on the training ground, with the basics. Undoing everything that has gone on with this club for what seems like an eternity. I just want to see us being able to play as well as Wolves or Sheffield. The very basics. I've seen that and I'm happy. Next week we work on stupid fucking mistakes and concentration for 90 minutes. And, some time in 2022, we'll have it perfected. I'm under absolutely no illusions here.

They fucked up hiring Emery in the first place. So, so wrong for us. A continuation of Wenger. The most Wenger like appointment they could have ever made. Cowardice. Complacency. The status quo. These guys have already proven they don't have what it takes. And they'll have to go too, before Arteta can have a genuine chance.

Much rests on the Kroekne mob getting involved with this club. Stan never will. Josh might. If he does, and he might, then maybe we have a chance. Even if not, if you look at Leicester, there are other ways to do this.

So far, I'm super impressed with Arteta. I watched Nelson and Auba and Ozil and wondered - why are they playing so well now, all of a sudden. It's not because of Raul or Kroenke, is it?

The season after Wenger left we were a couple of points off 4th and got to the Europa League final.
That’s what the squad Wenger left us with was able the achieve.
That’s not my opinion, it’s what happened.
Since then we’ve had a transfer window to improve the squad.
So spare me the bollox about what a mess he left us in.
It’s honestly quite pathetic how people who spent years saying that Wenger was so incompetent that anyone would come in and immediately improve things are now, when that has been shown conclusively to be bollox, desperately trying to change the narrative to how of course we can’t improve because of the mess Wenger left us in
:blah:
