I read somewhere that Leeds might be a loan option for Saliba? That’d be a great move for him, if we’re serious about it - Bielsa would certainly get him fired up and ready for the league! Thought they did a great job with Ben White last year.

Yeah it’s money we will just have to write off. Really makes you reflect on how poor and misjudged the recruitment has been, players hardly ever seem to appreciate in value with us now, feels like we’re always left with crap we can’t even give away.
Yep our squad is in really poor shape, we have a lot of garbage in it, players on huge wages who nobody wants to touch, we literally can’t give these players away.
Meanwhile Liverpool sell an a academy graduate who has never played in PL for 23 million.
Its going to take us a while to get out of this horrible mess.

I remember a couple of months ago Arteta was talking about having plans, and backup plans, and backup-backup plans for almost every scenario this summer, so it’s either really positive or really fucking worrying that we haven’t heard anything about other targets yet?!

 Aulas on top form, I see!
I mean, sure, there’s always a chance a deal will collapse whenever we’re involved, but it won’t be because we’ve missed some deadline that Aulas has set - if an offer comes in that he likes, he still sells.
Haven’t they already signed Aouar’s replacement? And didn’t he recently say they had to sell two out of Aouar, Depay and the Jeff?
Classic Aulas, the entertainer, the attention seeker! I think it will still go through, Aulas is just having his moment.

Honestly think it will be Jorginho on loan, that worries me and kind of makes me think Arteta doesn’t fully know what he is doing, I dunno...it scares me that we are continually linked to him.
I’ve not given up on Aouar just yet, we are dealing with Aulas, he is known for this and did this when we were buying Laca. Basically Aulas will try and milk you for every little bit he can.

Homegrown players will always sell (Walcott, Ox, Iwobi, etc, plus we had plenty of interest in AMN and Holding this summer) - it’s the NHGs that are the problem. When they’re on big wages they’re almost impossible to shift.
Thankfully, this should be the last year we have to put up with it - 90% of the problem players are out the door next summer whether they like it or not.
I’m sure I also read somewhere that the EPL are deferring this year’s rules on balancing accounts until next summer because of COVID, so that might give us some leeway to overspend this year knowing that a number of players will definitely be gone next summer?

Possibly, according to greatest rumours we are some way off their asking price though. And with no significant sales looking likely it's not promising.
The weird thing about the Jorginho rumour is that is nothing like Partey or Aouar. Just a right footed Xhaka. No thanks.

I just don’t get that Jorginho link at all. Our primary midfield targets (Aouar and Partey) have been absolutely spot on, so how can Jorginho possibly be the backup option? He’s not even close to being a similar player to either of those two, so it would represent a complete and total change of whatever plan we had for this year.

oh I agree, the thing is our homegrown actually contribute to our team and are no worse than the garbage NHG we have all over the squad. Mikel has a massive rebuild on his hands, him & Edu are the focus now, they know what they have to do and I don’t care how they do it, no excuses.

If our squad stays as it is then I think we are finishing anywhere between 8th-12th. I’m not being dramatic here, it’s what I genuinely think given the improvement of certain teams in PL.
Also, surely we can’t have spent all summer pursuing players we can’t afford?

it's as much about Arteta's use of the squad as it is the quality - if he keeps playing Xhaka instead of Ceballos and Luiz instead of Gabriel and having players like Saka warming the bench then yes it's gonna be a shit season

Yeah, if the players he wants don’t come in then we’re going to have to be a little braver with what we have at some point. I totally get the safety formation in the short-term as we looked to steady the ship, calm nerves and restore a bit of confidence, but we can’t go through a whole season playing 343 - it’s not bold enough, and opponents will eventually start to suss it out.
Everything hinges on finding a defensive pairing who are comfortable in a back 2. Not only do we need that extra attacking midfielder to add creativity through the middle, that player would also reduce the need for the CF to keep dropping deep to get involved with the build up (meaning we could move Auba back central and get someone more creative like Saka on the left), and I think we’d also get more out of Pepe / Nelson on the right if they had someone in that ACM spot to play off. Lots we can still try, but it all starts from the back...

We might be sending Guendouzi to Berlin on loan. We’re so desperate to get rid of the cunt we’re apparently just giving him to them without even receiving a loan fee.
This is why it isn’t always ideal to freeze out players. Particularly ones of value, you can’t expect someone to pay good money for a player that hasn’t been seen in months because of internal issues. It’s a terrible bargaining position.

Incomings are apparently looking unlikely now so could be a real slog until the next window. There's really no back up for Ceballos so if he got injured we'd be in trouble.
We did look better in the second half yesterday with Pepe wide right, Auba central and Willian / Saka rotating between left wing and no. 10. Hopefully Arteta gives that another go, but suspect he will revert to a back 3 again if he doesn't get the signings he wants.

I think this is more a culmination of years of mis-management. Giving Wenger that last contract, and them sticking with Emery when it was clear it wasn't going to work. Four years in the Europa, with a Champions League wage bill and players we literally can't give away due to their high wages. Major over spend last summer on players that still aren't ready, and then spending more money again in January on two players we don't really need and have barely featured (Mari & Cedric).
Add that in to the back drop of a global pandemic and expected major loss in revenue and we are just in a terrible position currently. Short of Kroenke stepping in with his own money (not going to happen), I don't see what more the current hierarchy can do?

The recruitment at this club is a complete shambles, I didn't think things could get any worse but they have. Mikel keeps on telling us to trust the process, yet between him and Edu they have been unable to close any of the deals, such as Aouar and Partey, we have had all summer to do it and a free run at both players, only Arsenal could manage to make a mess of such easy deals. We couldn't even sign Brentford's keeper, I mean how can we screw up any deal we go for...it's mind boggling.
To top it off, half of the outgoings are based on the interested clubs letting go of players themselves. We had a great opportunity to strengthen the team this summer and we failed.
Also...why are we so keen to let our Midfield depth walk without replacements? Are we going with a Xhaka / Elneny / Ceballos / Saka midfield all season, I mean isn't anybody coming in? I don't mean loans with no obligation to buy either, this club is like a rat down a drainpipe when it hears of players at clubs such as Chelsea and United are surplus to requirements, small time fc.
This club makes me sick.
P.S. If money is the issue, why are we shopping in a market that is beyond us, why not target players that are affordable? It makes no sense to me....

I don’t think it’s not for the want of trying. I’m sure if it were that simple we could have bagged Aouar or Partey but the fact is we aren’t in a position financially to do so. We’re counting the cost for years of waste, look at all the shit we can’t even give away now, that’s not on Edu or Arteta.
The harsh reality for us is that we’re not like the mega rich clubs who can write things off if it doesn’t work out, when we spend big money every penny has to count.

For once, I'm not sure how ridiculous a non-spend really is. They haven't had a crowd in the Emirates for a while. And Ozil needs to be treated to another year at full pay, which adds up to a fair bit. I'm wondering where the other clubs are getting the cash from.
We could ask Ozil for a loan I suppose.

So we have a huge reshuffle at the club, clearing out the dross from the hierarchy and middlemen to alleviate the old issues and be more efficient at the day to day running of the club.
And here we are, giving players away for nothing, not selling the old turgid shite that have stunk up the pitch for years, under bidding for our 'targets' and missing out, not replacing in key areas that we are weak in whilst making ourselves weaker, having no money and waiting for the last day of the window to hopefully get some has been loan deal in.

Let's see what happens between now and Oct 16. I do genuinely have a lot of sympathy for Arteta, Edu and Vinnai and the mess they've inherited - I don't think anyone expected Raul to get canned off so suddenly, at the start of our most important window for a decade, so that must have thrown a load of plans into chaos. And I generally think they've done a great job in putting out fires over the last 10 months and salvaging a winning side from the ashes. However, they won't be entirely blameless if we end up with nothing else to show for this window.
Edu in particular has put his neck on the block after ditching most of our scouting network in favour of a smaller, more centralised team that's built around smart data analysis. Whilst I totally support that move, and think it was 100% necessary to modernise in this way, you've still got to be asking "who are the other targets?" You can't tell me that Partey and Aouar are the only two players in the world that would improve us right now. We're not exactly peak Barcelona.
I totally understand the argument that we don't want to end up with another load of duds that we can't shift, but, you know... stop handing out stupid contracts and it won't be an issue! If these 'best in class' signings aren't available to us at the moment then we might need to consider a smaller step-change instead, with a view to an upgrade a year or two down the line.
Anyway, let's see what happens over the next couple of weeks - maybe we have some rough diamonds from the EFL lined up.

I do agree with this but...in the same instance if we are going to make big sweeping changes in regards to recruitment and the process then when we should know what we are letting ourselves in for. Were any of these new innovative ideas laid down by Edu means tested or even thought out properly before being implemented?
Arteta was fairly clear in his stance a few weeks back that we needed to recruit in Midfield, his words were we need quality in this area.
He is know saying this....
Arteta said: “Believe me, the ownership and the board and doing everything they can to maximise the resources and make this club successful. I have 100 per cent backing for them. Whatever we can do, they are willing to do it, to support us.“Whatever we can add of course we will do it. But we have to be realistic. The people here are supportive.
“Whoever jumps in the boat will be welcome. But we all have a very clear direction and purpose to drive our goals.”
What does this even mean given we seem unable to complete deals we have been pursuing? It's just empty words as far as I am concerned.
If Arteta and Edu's eyes are too big for their belly then they need to start shopping in the market that is affordable...otherwise I have no idea what Arteta means with these comments...they make no sense.

Reliable journo, I just can't believe it.
Another tried and tested tactic. Wait until the last minute then run out of time trying to do a month's work in one day. By the end of it the target player hates us just as much as his current club.

A few of the Arsenal friendly journos reporting it now, that we are ready to activate the release clause. If that's correct I would assume it could all go through quite quickly if Partey is keen.

I'm almost laughing as I say this, but there might be the remotest of remote chances that the Kroenkes always planned to back this move if they were forced to, and were just waiting to see if we could raise the money through sales first?
There's just something about how calm Arteta and Edu have appeared about our transfer business, and how there's been literally zero interest in any other targets...

Yeah, as I understand it (in Spain, at least) it’s the player that pays their own release clause, and not the buying club, so you’d have to think that the buying club and the player would have arranged that in advance - terms probably agreed at the same time.

Just like that, CB and CM addressed in one window - surgical! I like it.
Also interesting to see the recruitment that’s been going on at u23 level, which has allowed us to send a raft of younger players out on loan. That marks a big step forward too, imo - either get these kids ready to play or build their value to sell so we can reinvest. No more stagnating in the reserves and then leaving for nothing after all that work.

Probably a bit harsh that. I mean Theo did score over 100 goals for us, which is not an easy achievement.
Welbeck was never really signed as a “talent” but more as a decent backup striker and to be fair, he was ok at the role and unlucky with injuries.
Wilshere is just pain old bad luck, there was a very talented player there who has had his career ruined by injuries.

When he wasn’t in the treatment room, Theo’s numbers weren’t actually that bad for us at all. Compare that now to what we’ve been getting from our forwards apart from Auba since.
He was never world class though and wasted his best years with us when he was never Wenger’s preferred choice. Career totally passed him by.

it's true about Theo up to a point, i never thought he delivered much - even the 100 goals were over a long period of time - but compared to the total paucity of goals from anyone other than Auba - until recently anyway - he was actually good in comparison
I liked Welbz but he just wasn't anywhere near consistent enough in front of goal
and Wilshere yes obvs he was unfortunate
but in each case these guys were given a lot of time at the club and ultimately none of them fulfilled their perceived potential

One mans trash is another mans treasure. I actually thought Wilshere & Walcott were pretty decent at times in their career. Wilshere, Walcott, Diaby, Ramsey et all never truly reached their potential through mismanagement of their bodies.
