The worst thing about England winning would be Kane/Sterling/Maguire etc. getting away with diving, cheating and fouling even more than they already do.

Saka still won't get obvious free-kicks and pelanties though after being assaulted.

These are two shite teams hacking a ball around a pitch. Taking the piss out of the great teams that competed in this competition in the past. The result is purely random because none of those cunts have enough talent to actually control or win a game on merit. Play it again and the the other lot wins - randomly. If you are cool and calm then the keeper has no chance. If you are a kid and in your first big tournament and millions of people are hanging on your kick, well I guess the manager needs to call up a cowardly hero like Sterling to do the business. But he left to to the kid. The occasion is sometimes insurmountable. Maybe Sterling has endorsements that rely on him not missing.

It wasn't the worst penalty ever, but it wasn't great - 'keeper goes the right way and he will probably save it. He did and he did.
Rashford was the only one who missed - I have no time for players who can't hit the target from 12 yards and those stupid stuttering run ups annoy me.

I thought in general the refereeing over the tournament was reasonably good and it did seem that referees were a bit more forgiving and allowed play to flow which is not a bad thing.

However, there must be limits especially with teams like Italy who continually foul knowing they will not get yellows so just keep breaking up play as nothing to fear. Same with the danish game.

However, for the life of me, i cannot understand how VAR could look at the Jorginho decision and accept it was only a yellow card. Taht is a red all day long. Even the premier league referees using VAR would give that. Would it have made much of difference with only around 10 minutes to go? I suspect not but from that moment, Grealish didnt look as a dangerous.

The other rule that i think needs changing and i have thought this for a while is the one where its only a booking where Chelini grabbed Saka round the neck to stop the counter. There was cover so no clear goal scoring opportunity hence no red but a yellow doesnt feel right. The defending team know they can take the player out and only get a yellow yet stop a certain attack. We saw early on that just having cover back doesnt mean you don’t score as England showed with teh first attack. It wasnt like it was even an attempt to play the ball, he grabbed his collar and hauled him back. A yellow doesnt feel enough punishment for that and the free kick is so far away its not a threat. I think the rules need looking at so that even if there is cover, if you make no attempt to play the ball and just cynically stop the player, its a red card.

Fully agree. I hate those run ups, it just seems the striker has doubt in their mind. In a final, just belt it like Kane & Maguire. Pick your spot & hammer it home.

If the keeper had saved Kane or Maguire, you have to say fair play. But those two penalties are how you take them in a shootout

Letters
12-07-2021, 08:45 AM
Maguire's was the only truly unstoppable penalty. Kane's was competent enough, but saveable.

It was right in the bottom corner. If it had been saved, i think you have to put that down as truly fantastic save rather than a poor penalty

Globalgunner
12-07-2021, 09:15 AM
Penalties are a truly unsatisfying way of resolving stalemates after 90 mins. My suggestion is to take a player off from both teams after every 5 mins in 1st extra time. It means there will only be 8 players on each team for the last 15 mins of 2nd extra time. More space more chances....but knowing Gareth Southgate. he would take off all his strikers and camp out in his box with 8 players anyway.

The other suggestion is take a secret draw or toss of a coin before the start of the game. The draw/toss determines who wins the game in the event of a draw after 90 mins. Its a secret draw/toss so no one except an independent arbiter knows who has been given the game. So in extra time both teams come out knowing that if they dont score to win, the other team just might be awarded the game. Cue blood and thunder for 30 mins instead of playing for pens.

Oh. I forgot...England:p

southgate took off players who were much more experienced - i was thinking this morning that had he still been on the pitch, Walker would be a good candidate to take a pel, but he was subbed for Sancho

southgate basically played for pels from the moment Italy scored

and his case that he picked the best players on pels in training ignores the fact that it's very different in a major final - he should have chosen experience

he's taken us a long way but can he win us anything? - i suspect not - he doesn't know how to grab a game and win it

Weren't you all cooing about what a great job Southgate was doing a few days ago? In this thread? His teams are shit and have always been shit. They play shit and then laughably refer to it as football. That's why I stopped watching it because it's unwatchable. Like every other so-called football team out there today. England has only "improved" because football has fallen to their level. Doesn't matter who you watch, it's the same comatose patter ball. No wonder the Italians won it, that's their speciality. Another useless team that is perfectly suited to the modern drudgery that has replaced football.

I think he got most things right during the tournament but last night was definitely the worst performance collectively and some decisions were a bit strange too. I think we just froze and the occasion got the better of us, managing the pressure and having a strong mentality is basically the difference between winners and losers. That’s why these other countries produce serial winners and we don’t.

Has to be seen as progress though and we should certainly be aiming to win the World Cup. Getting to the latter stages doesn’t mean anything now we’ve done it a couple of times.

Scotland was a much worse performance. I actually don't think the performance was bad last night. Italy are the best side we've faced and sure, they were the better team but it was a stress free first half and while they equalised and there were a few scares they weren't battering us.
It's easy to blame Southgate for bringing on two players to take penalties who then both missed () but had they both scored everyone would be hailing him as a genius, and on another night they might well have.
Overall it was a good tournament for us and we do look like a proper team now. It's just disheartening with another "oh so near".
1990, 1996, 1998...and now 2021. It does "wear you down through the years".
It's the closest we've come in my lifetime and with home advantage it feels like an opportunity missed.

It's a massive opportunity missed and i wouldn't be surpised if we bombed in the next WC - think about how easy our last two competitions have been in terms of the opposition we faced - we surely can't be that lucky again... ?

I know I'll probably sound defeatist and wise after the fact, but have we really actually gotten any better?

In this tournament and 2018 we've beaten who we'd be expected to beat and been beaten by the team's we probably expected not to. We beat Germany fair enough, but it's the worst Germany team in a generation and you could argue we should have beaten Croatia. But frankly it doesn't really feel any different to every other tourney, when we come up against anyone half decent we shit ourselves.

The performances have generally been diabolical, the football mediocre and we supposedly have the most exciting and best crop of players in years. Though I don't quite agree with NQ in saying everyone is absolute shit, it's hard to argue that international football does seem to be in something of a lull now in that there isn't one team head and shoulders above everyone else and every team has big weaknesses or problems to exploit.

We had a chance this time round we will probably never have again, playing on home soil with other teams flying here, there and everywhere, and we didn't take advantage. And with them nob head fans last night, will we even get the opportunity to host again any time soon?

I think we've improved.

Our game management is a lot better, the way we held the ball against Denmark and didn't panic. Even last night, we didn't get overrun. Italy were probably the best team in the tournament - they haven't lost for 30-something games - and we took them the distance. Italy dominated the second half but they weren't hammering us. There were a few scares but they didn't calve us open. At times we do look like a proper team, our passing and movement are good.

But...being at home, it was our best chance since '96 to win a tournament, we went one step further this time but didn't win it. And yeah, with the morons I doubt we'll get to host one again any time soon. So I suspect we won't win anything for the foreseeable.

Game management is a buzz term that was suddenly introduced by the media around two years ago. It was rarely discussed before that. And if the "improvement" in a competitive sport means not being overrun then no wonder you've improved because it was impossible to get worse.

Just Like Arsenal. England wont improve unless they get a better manager. Southgate wouldnt last a season at any of the top 8 PL clubs, yet is at the highest profile job in the UK. Keep deluding yourselves. A manager who doesnt have the nerve to substitute Kane even for 20 mins is a dunce, Brings on Rhinos like Henderson as soon as he has a slimmest of leads is just a survivalist. You had the easiest side of the draw, home advantage almost all the way and yet.

A Denmark who had been in Baku two days before, they were dead on their feet and mentally beaten.

We didn't really get overrun but for the bulk of the game we defended with all 11 players. There were times Sterling was the furthest forward (Kane was fucking about somewhere else) and he was fifteen yards inside our own half. In the first half Italy had no idea how to break through, but second half, especially when Immobile went off, they controlled it. We only even countered in the first twenty minutes or so when it looked like they didn't have any full backs. Apart from that the only plan was smash it up to Kane, which worked once or twice against Chiellini... then they stuck Bonucci against him and he was dominated.

2016 was hilarious an outlier, but are the last two tournaments really any different to 98, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010 or 2012? We're not picking donkeys like Heskey anymore but we look alright then come up against the first half decent team and get beaten.

2014 was also dogshit (think we got knocked out in group stages without winning a game?) so the improvement from 2014 & 16 has been immense.

I think one of the key differences with Southgate’s team is that he has made them likeable. Previously most couldn’t care for the English team and even within the squads, older players have talked of club rivalries causing problems whereas this time there is none of that.

In this year's group we couldn't beat Scotland and only scored two ffs.

We are obviously better than 2012 and 2014 but they were the worst England teams in decades so if we're using that as the bar then the bar isn't even low it's on the floor. My point is that were just reverting to where we usually are, the only difference is we've had the luck of the draw.

I think that's a bit harsh, we completely dominated Denmark. There are really fine lines in football, against Germany there was the Muller chance. He puts that away - as he would have 9 times out of 10 - and who knows what would have happened? Had Rashford scored his penalty we'd probably have won the whole thing - I know others missed but that was the one which really changed the balance of pressure. Fine lines.

I didn't enjoy watching us in the group stages but we grew into the tournament and overall I thought we played pretty well. But I do now thing that it's never coming home. This was our best chance and we blew it. So while I don't think Southgate should be sacked and I think he's the right person to lead us in to the World Cup, but I'm not expecting that much from us there.

It’s a problem in general for football. Racism seems to appear when sides lose.

The abuse Saka, Rashford etc have received is wrong, there is no debate and those dishing it out deserve any punishment that goes their way.

But its not just a problem in England. When Germany lost in 2018, Ozil suffered racist abuse (even his team mates joined in from memory), Italian fans directed monkey chants at Lukaku & others (to put them off during the game/banter was their excuse), the French players that come from Africa often get abused when they lose. The less said about the Russians the better given teh amount of racism their fans dish out even to black players on their own team.

It’s a problem football needs to fix but there are some pretending its only an English problem, it absolutely isnt.

So illustrative that you say Russians, it speaks so directly to your almost total indoctrination.

On the contrary, normal people wouldn't even bother focusing on race and gender or any of that stuff you woke tossers bang on about night and day. You are the weirdos keeping it front and centre in the equally woke media. A choir of incessant 1 percenters who'd be dismissed were is not for cesspools like twitter and facebook and the BBC.

Losing the football, not so much. Having to put up with twats like yourself? The final insult.

Fixed completely? How out of touch are you? Actually?

First, it's plain you yet again lack the details and the facts but are heavy on the judgement - the sign of ignorance.

Then, the notion you can "fix" the very diversity you femboys always champion. There will ALWAYS be elements of every problem in this world. Billions of individuals, how could it be otherwise? If you are genuinely stupid enough to knock on the door of each and every one of those billions and insist they change their thinking then I demand you shoot yourself in the head as just compensation.

Edge cases do not make an epidemic. Yet the knickers wetters are always crying about epidemics. Because they need them so they can virtue signal and, by extension, keep racism alive so the "virtuous" circle keeps on making them significant. Heaven forbid they fall back on their own character and achievements to warrant real significance.

We could pat ourselves on the back and say "well at least we're not as bad as <insert other country here>" but as my dad once said in a rare moment of clarity and wisdom, you should compare yourselves with the best, not the worst.
There are some people who have a victim mentality and declare every problem they have in life to be because of their race/gender/sexuality etc. But at the same time these problems do still exist in society and while it's probably impossible to completely remove those problems shouldn't we always strive to do better? We ARE the best. This is the greatest nation in the history of the world, check the history books for all the evidence you'll ever need. It's also the most tolerant nation on the planet, or maybe neck and neck with some European nations, but at the very top nonetheless. Yet we have a media and the woke brigade constantly bashing the best while they protect the worst. Go and take a look for yourself and see for yourself. Have Rashford and Saka ACTUALLY put up with any shit? I'm 100% against that if they have. But we only have the media's word to go on and that's nowhere near good enough for me. Is it good enough for you?

Bear in mind, we live in such a faggot society now that even the slightest comment can cause an avalanche of stupidity. When I post on the internet I fully accept that there are potentially billions of people out there who have the capacity to respond. So, do I expect every response will be reasonable? Only if I'm a fucking idiot and so precious I should still be in nappies. And isn't it actually more likely the arseholes will respond? So factor that in and make the case that 0.00000000000000000000000000000000001% of the population are fucked in the head. So what? Big deal. Where's the problem?

Syria and Iran are being bombed right now and Rashford earns a million quid a minute for not being able to hit a barn door for 2 yards. Good luck to the pretender, if you can achieve what he has a achieved on so little talent (comparatively speaking) then give him a round of applause. But I also recall he was breaking his arse virtue signalling not so long ago - milking that same crowd who are now, apparently, racist? Swings and roundabouts. And fuck him anyway, you really think he gives a damn about some lowlife posting on the net? No way.

Perspective is what's required. Rashford will survive in the luxury he's accustomed to, none of this will touch him in any way. The lowlifes will continue to be lowlifes no matter how loud the fags and fems, trannies and lefties scream and pull their hair. Storm in a teacup. Much ado about nothing. Jumped on by woke racists to keep their hateful, spiteful, racist agenda rolling. Because without it, what would they moan about?
