Happy new year!

Can’t remember the last time we took points off City, must be 4-5 years now?

Don’t think we’ll be hammered but I expect a narrow loss.

Happy New Year!

Will need an unbelievable performance to win this one. With our tendency to only play really well in one half, doubt it will come this time sadly.

Martinelli had no business getting that shot away near the end.

We’re finding our team and it keeps improving. Ther will be setbacks, that is natural with such a young side, but the positives are putting the negatives in the shade.

45 minutes of competitive football against one of the league’s best is something we haven’t managed for a long time. Maintaining it for 90 is obviously the goal, but even if the second half doesn’t go our way, this still feels like a step forward for this group. Hopefully something they’ll be able to look back on and use as a blueprint…

Proud of the boys today regardless - a lot of more “experienced” Arsenal sides of the not too distant past would have completely lost their shit over those decisions, and the game would have descended into a load of self-indulgent petulance and finger-pointing, and a 5 goal mauling.

If we’re smart, we use this to build a siege -mentality to carry us through the rest of the season.

Everything hinged on that pen. He should have been booked for going over like a sack of shit. If its shirt pulling, then you need to give a penalty every corner ball. Any excuse to be bent to fuck.

My only slight grumble from today.
That was never a penalty, but that shirt grab gave the ref an excuse to give the decision.
Strangely that did not apply to our early penalty shout which was every bit as much of a penalty as the one City were given.

That's the positive stuff i am taking from the game and the development of our season. We are beginning to look like a genuine top 4 side again, sure we have a bit more work to do with improving the team and squad but we are really close now. For all my criticism of Arteta, he really does look to be developing a good side, we are playing pleasing to watch football now too.

Me personally, I can accept another season outside of CL as long as we continue developing as a team and buying the right profile of player to add to the squad. Nobody gave us a chance of top 4 this season so if we don't finish top 4, but finish top 6 then that is progress and i can live with that for now.

I am trying to not get too emotionally invested this season, we were always up against it now Spurs have Conte as their manager and United have got rid of Ole. I am not saying we can't finish 4th but even with how well we are currently playing, it is going to still be very difficult. Let's be honest, we are the underdogs out of the 3 so if we finish 4th that's just a bonus IMO.

It's actually VAR not the referee, well in the case of the penalties. What i don't understand is why our penalty appeal was deemed not worthy of VAR inspection yet there one was? Don't forget, VAR called the penalty not the referee. In the Odegaard incident, VAR ignored it which to me is very questionable....and i have seen it happen countless times this season. VAR is there to protect referees and is not actually accountable for when they ignore certain incidents in games....corrupt at times? Maybe....

I did feel the ref was a bit card happy towards us, I honestly don't think that second yellow of Gabriel's was worthy of a yellow, especially given Rodri was basically given the whole game to kick our players off the park without a single yellow card brandished to him.

LDG
01-01-2022, 09:08 PM
Seriously, if a ref trots over to the screen and sees what we all saw with realistic eyes, he sees Xhaka holding his shirt, which is of no impedence to his decision to go arse over tit. The leg which Silver was looking to dive over is removed, and he has already made the decision to go over.

If you’re a ref and you don’t like being conned, you see it for what it is, and be a man about it. Book the cunt for simulation.

If you’re Xhaka, you get hauled off for being a twat, and you never play for the club again.

If we’ve going for shirt tugs in the area, then I want to watch how many penalties have been denied this season. Complete bullshit the whole thing.

Niall_Quinn
02-01-2022, 05:26 PM
Actually watched this bollocks as the family was around for new year. Awful game, the gypos looked like they were stuffed with Christmas pud and couldn't be arsed and our lot just aren't very good.

Agree with the argument that VAR is inconsistently applied and therefore just another way for the officials to cheat when they need to. Scandalous to review one incident and ignore the other, but that sort of shit has been happening for decades in various forms. The decisions were correct though. Xhaka clearly, and incredibly stupidly gave the mega cheat a clear opportunity to dive with that unnecessary shirt pull, of course the pen was going to be given when handed on a plate like that. And the second call was never a pen, the attacker put the boot in on the keeper first. Easy decisions, but they still managed to fuck it up by applying VAR so unevenly. Time to scrap that shit now, plainly it hasn't worked.

The two sendings off were the main issue. One that was given but never was, and one that wasn't even mentioned but was stonewall. I thought cheating and diving was going to be cracked down on, but those gypos obviously have a free pass. Horrible bunch of cunts. Diving all over the place. Going down at the slightest touch. But the arabs have cash and the gambling syndicates in Asia need to be fed so giving the ref any opportunity to earn a commission is just dumb. Like Xhaka, Gabriel must know the score. You have to play it smart and both walked into it.

The Rodri sending off though. Why wasn't that a red and why wasn't it even mentioned? Isn't taking your short off a yellow? Or has that been rescinded? And isn't inciting the crowd a yellow? Or is that just for some teams? Two yellows makes a red, unless I've fallen out of touch with the ever changing rules. But not even a mention. We were watching on BT (which cost £27 just to sign up - refund request already in). That horrific non-human Ferdinand was glorifying the gypo cheating. You have to go down, he reckons. When they say "professional" what are they referring to? Professional cheats? When they have the nerve to talk about examples to young kids, what examples would those be? Ferdinand? What a piece of shit that thing is.

That Japanese player is pretty good though. Quite enjoyed watching him play. Seems like an old school defender and he won everything in the air. Martinelli was shite. Had hopes for him way back, but he doesn't have the stamina for 90 minutes. Several times he could have put in an extra 10% to make an extra yard to make himself available, but he shirked it. Disappointing.

Xkaka's style is not suited to the English Premiership it's too fast for him that's why he looks good in International's, would be better suited in Italy or France.

Or in non-league...

I'm not a Xhakaphobe like you but I agree the shirt pull was silly. It gave the ref all the excuse he needed to give it.
It was a dive though, he went down easier than your mum #brooker.

Xhaka doing what he did on Saturday is why he gets so much hate. He makes idiotic game changing mistakes on a semi-regular basis. Quality wise he is a decent enough player, aside from his stupid mistakes. I personally think Xhaka has actually played quite well this season, especially more recently in the more advanced role. Regardless of this, I hope we are in the market for one or two new Central Midfielders, both Xhaka and Partey need serious competition for their places.

The biggest clowns are those who think an Arsenal team can achieve anything of substance with that shithead Xhaka in the team. He was wearing the captain's armband against City. Disgusting.

:d That aside, we are in a battle for top 4 this season. I am not saying we will finish top 4, but our recent performances suggest to me this team has enough quality to sustain the challenge right up until the end of the season.

I was thinking about this and I basically agree. Xhaka is a pretty good player, not really at the level we need if we are going to push on but he's not the duffer some make out.
But yes, he does have these brainfarts far too regularly and it lets both us as a team and himself down.

Xhaka could be having the perfect game but still be very capable of making game changing errors. I’ve actually grown to appreciate what he does do given how shit Partey has looked most of the time, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Partey has looked a better player with Xhaka next to him.

The problem for Xhaka though is that he doesn’t have any powers of recovery due to a lack of agility. Which makes his decision making clumsy and rash when he’s caught out.

whenever someone says Xhaka is playing well all they mean is he isn't as shite as he was before - let's face it, it's a very low bar he needs to get over

your key sentence is "He makes idiotic game changing mistakes on a semi-regular basis"

literally... THIS

that's just not good enough - he costs us points every season just like he did on Saturday

until we get rid of him we are starting every game with a handicap

Bloody hell Mac! You absolutely hate Xhaka don't you? :haha:

He can be a handicap but he can also be very useful. I personally would upgrade on him but let's be honest it isn't going to happen anytime soon, Arteta seems to like him, in fact pretty much everybody who has been in charge since Wenger has constantly picked him.

We seem to be linked with quite a few CM's so here's hoping we replace him or gradually phase him out of the team. I personally think we have bigger issues to deal with in the squad at the moment.

He can be a handicap but he can also be very useful.

even if that's true, why then don't we get rid and find another player who's equally 'useful' but isn't a **** who gets sent off regularly and gives away pels and FKs...?

he tried a sliding tackle in the first half against Man City for which, if he'd connected with the Citeh player, he'd have been sent off again

he's a total liability

Losing the ball when it's easier to retain it is a much bigger problem than anything Xhaka gets up to. They were all doing it. A simple pass, a simple cross, a slight injection of pace that caused panic, a throw-in to nowhere, so many times. Especially towards the end where that match was still winnable because the gypos were so lethargic at the back. Just a few considered passes or a bit of sense from players who had space but didn't exploit it. Very frustrating to watch. The old Arsenal would have ripped that gypo side a new one.

You do realise we were down to 10 men?

For all my criticisms of Arsenal we played really well against City, ripped them to shreads in that first half, best I've seen Arsenal play since peak Wenger and one of the best displays I have seen in PL this season from any team.

We lost our way a bit with 10 men but still put in a very credible performance. For all of our faults over the past what 10 years...we seem to have really improved recently, we look a legitimate top 4 or top 4 challenging side, first time in years. Here's hoping we can maintain the current level of performance.

actually we had a corner near the end which ESR made a complete ballsup of, if he'd put a good ball in we'd have been the ones on 2-1 and maybe could've held out, who knows.
