Hope it's second strong mainly but I imagine Jesus would be there.

I imagine if we go full second string then there’s a good chance Brighton will win.

Really not bothered though, just one of those games that if we go through, great. If not, oh well. Now is the time to go out if you’re not winning it.

0-3 Trossard hatter

we really should play a complete side of kids and reserves and throw this, but knowing Arteta that won't happen

Trying to care about this but failing

Is it a bit off that I kind of hope we lose tonight?

I just think the league cup is a worthless competition and the fewer fixtures we have to play in the new year the better ?

Can’t we get punished by the FA for not putting out a competitive side?

I would have had the school boy who was on the bench and got 90 seconds against Brentford on the bench tonight

But can’t say I think the side he’s put out is that silly. Only one definite first teamer in the XI

don't think so - and anyway i think most of those players hav featured in the PL this season so it's not like they're all total Academy kids

and yes i would also have rested Saliba but good that no-one else is out there

even Xhaka isn't playing :faint:

good work by Arteta here - no shame in losing to Brighton but if we win it ill be good encoureagemenrt for those players and he should stick with that team for the LC

Think too much stock in to having fewer fixtures as being a positive really. Also, it feels anathema to me as to what football is about.

Last season is the prime example of it being overdone.

I meant that more in response to the idea of actually putting out a team of academy players rather than the team we have put out which of course is a competitive team. This is the kind of game that’s a win-win because it’s a total free hit. If we lose oh well no more league cup games to play, if we win well hopefully that means we have a bit of strength in depth and players that can score goals outside of the first XI

Think too much stock in to having fewer fixtures as being a positive really. Also, it feels anathema to me as to what football is about.

Last season is the prime example of it being overdone.

Last season you have to factor in Covid and the fixtures that were lost and then had to be caught up on as a result

At the risk of sounding cynical, fuck what is anathema to what football is all about…we are a side with injury prone players and those players tend to be ones we can least do without.

Now I was watching a documentary about Japan Airlines Flight 123, a fatal accident years in the making. Stress fractures in a poorly repaired aft bulkhead (the repair was made in 1978, the crash occurred in 1985) developed after constants hours of flight time putting strain on a part of the plane made to prevent rapid depressurisation. Then one day it broke, the depressurisation occurred, breaking off the verticle stabiliser and severing the hydraulic fuel lines….In a word the plane became impossible to fly and despite heroic attempts by the pilot plummeted into Mount Fuji.

The point being if you have players prone to stress related breakage, the more they play the more likely they invariably break down. So yes, the less fixtures we have to play absolutely the better…given we don’t have the squad depth to play all competitions

What’s somewhat concerning is that Brighton played a second string side and brought on their first teamers not much before we did

Our strength in depth is a concern but it’s only City that can field a second string and still expect to win most games. The League Cup is shite and I’m sure these guys who play in it know there isn’t much pressure to perform.

Mac76

I heard Arteta interviewed on the radio after and going by his voice he didn't sound that bothered, perhaps tellingly he didn't criticise the players and said we deserved more from the game, which wasn't the impression i got from the commentary

Oh I’m being massively uncharitable but I was hoping that when players like Martinelli and Jesus came on they might be able to grab a goal, especially given we all agree that scoring is a bit of a concern for us. But in the grand scheme of things, I’m not losing any sleep over it
