I don’t why but we’ve had a real nightmare getting results at this ground recently, we’ve only scored twice in the last five games at Goodison Park. Despite Everton being to all intents and purposes, a championship side.

I’m going to be honest I don’t expect things to change on Sunday, I don’t think we will lose but I don’t think we will win either. I can see a rather turgid 0-0 or 1-1 game.

Nah - we got this. Hope Havertz has a good game - cos I don't see him being dropped for this one.

Nah we don’t got this, we’ve lost this fixture every time we’ve played there under Arteta

I think I’m being generous by saying will be a draw.

Neverton are an awful team but that hasn’t stopped us losing here every season. Just a weird bogey ground that we need to banish.

I’ll say this will be another narrow game but with us just edging it 1-2.

My team to play Everton

Ramsdale, Kiwior, Gabriel, Saliba, Tomoyasu, Jorginho, Vieira, Trossard, Nelson, Nketiah and Jesus

No Zinchenko, White, Rice, Havertz, Odegaard, Saka or Martinelli in starting XI.

At least you got the teams the right way round this time ;)

Not sure who you're playing where with some of that, but I get where you are going with that lineup - I hate Dyke with a passion but he totally has the number of a naive idiot like Arteta and the only way we have a ghost of a chance of winning is to play a more different, hungry, gritty team (or as much as we have one)

But much as I like Jesus he is wrong for this game, plus Rice will give us more resilience, so for me you have him in left 8 with Vieira in the Odegaard role

Why would you have someone who can’t pass the ball well in the no8 role?

Jesus would be playing wide right, and with Everton playing a deep block defensively potential takes a lot of players out of the game and lays the ball on for Edward or Trossard plus a hard worker like Nelson who will be persistent in winning the ball back high up the pitch.

Jorginho can pass the ball therefore he plays instead of Rice

Fuck this bogey team. Must win!

Is Partey still out?

Ramsdale, White, Saliba. Gabriel, Zinchenko, Partey, Rice, Odegaard, Saka, Jesus, Martinelli

So last time we won at Goodison Park was 22nd October 2017. Not a single player from that team or on the bench is still with us.

For Everton four of their XI lineup are still at the club - Pickford, Keane, Gueye and Calvert-Lewin

The last time we got a point from Goodison Park was the 21st December 2019

Four players in the squad are still at the club - Saka, Martinelli, Nelson and Smith Rowe

Only three players in the Everton squad from that day are still playing for the club - Calvert Lewin, Keane and Pickford

No point being made here, just that both sides have gone through massive personnel overhaul in the last few years. The 0-0 game was actually on in the background when I was at the barbers as I remember, utterly dull game with hardly any chances for either side and the only slightly interesting fact was that both Ancelotti and Arteta had both been appointed as coaches for Everton and Arsenal respectively but neither were in place at the time (in fact I think both watched the game in the stands and Ferguson and Ljungberg were in the dug out)

Dyche and Arteta have a head to head record of two wins a piece and three draws

Burnley 0-0 Arsenal February 2020
Arsenal 0-1 Burnley December 2020
Burnley 1-1 Arsenal March 2021
Burnley 0-1 Arsenal September 2021
Arsenal 0-0 Burnley January 2022
Everton 1-0 Arsenal February 2023
Arsenal 4-0 Everton March 2023

If today is indicative of what’s gone before, probably might be as well not to expect too many goals

Quite possibly he’s not fully fit.

17-09-2023, 02:42 PM
I’m not against Raya playing but I do think Ramsdale is being harshly treated and Arteta is looking more at statistics about clean sheets than his individual performances. The reason we’ve not kept a clean sheet at home is because we hold a high line and someone in midfield invariably plays a Harikari pass.

I think Raya is just being given a game because he'll play on Wednesday.

I have my very set ideas on who should play and who shouldn’t play and very few people on here agree with me let alone Captain Black.

However where I think we were all in agreement is that Havertz had to come out of the side and that Vieira had probably earned the right to start. So can’t really argue with that

Either that or Arteta is saving Ram until Weds - my hunch is you're right but that will be a huge kick in the teeth for Ram after he helped us make top 4

Deep block isn’t it.

So from what I can gather. Nketiah was the player deemed to be offside but given that the ball wasn’t played to him to begin with, him being in an offside position means fuck all. So once again the lads from VAR have shit the bed and we’ve paid the price

I like generally in theory what Zinchenko gives us but I think his passing has been woeful today from 15 minutes onwards.

Think Everton have been more emboldened to go more for it with Martinelli not on the pitch now.

Marc Overmars
17-09-2023, 04:32 PM
Jesus should have started. Eddie relies on precise service and right now there is none of that in the team.

HCZ_Reborn
17-09-2023, 04:32 PM
Have to say last season in this fixture, Everton had the upper hand even in the first half. Today we’ve dominated we just only managed to break them down once and the VAR team shit the bed (that’s three goals Martinelli has had ruled out now)

Still don't understand why that was given offside.

Gabriel plays the ball sideways, it comes off the Everton player to Nketiah. How can he be offside?

Cos some wee fuckin nerd who has never kicked a baw has deemed it an unintentional hit of the ball? The fuck does that even mean.

Game's fucked.

Leandro Trossard's second-half goal secured a hard-fought 1-0 win for Arsenal against Everton as the Gunners ended a 10-game winless run at Goodison Park.

No that’s ten games without a win in Liverpool (Liverpool or Everton) our winless run against Everton was five games

This too from the BBC:

Everton have failed to score in four of their five Premier League games this season, more often than any other team.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have scored in all five of their games, more than any other team.

Dermot Gallagher saying the Martinelli decision was correct because Beto would never have chosen to play the ball back like that.

Just like Frank Sinclair would never have chosen to lob his own goalkeeper and score an absolute peach of a goal in the wrong end, it’s utter bollocks the ball came off him last because he went to try and block the pass from Gabriel…whether he intended it to land for Nketiah is neither here nor there.

IBK

I agree. If a defender shanks a ball unintentionally into the path of a forward who goes on to score the goal of course stands. Why should it be different with an offside? The rule as I understand it concerns whether or not the player off whom the ball deflects is in control of the ball? If so, then (1) why is this necessary? You can affect a the trajectory of a pass without being in control of the ball and for offside it should simply be a case of the player who last touched the ball. (2) Stockley Park is now getting involved in guessing a players intent, which is a subjective unknown and surely not the original purpose of VAR. The competency of VAR decisions is now being drawn into question in every other game and surely it would be better for the off field official to stay out of it. If this trend is to continue I would prefer it if the on pitch referee makes the decision. He might get it wrong, but as it stands, VAR is doubling down on it.

Lastly, I thought that VAR was supposed to favour the attacking team. We are seeing too many incidents where it seems that VAR is trying to chalk off goals rather than officiating on clear and obvious refereeing mistakes.

Mac76

Also interesting to see the Sheffield Utd manager talk about the ref basically telling them how to play the game, officials are interpreting and dicatating far too much
