If I’m honest I’ve hated every change in the champions league format in the last twenty years, from the last 16 (much preferred the second group stage) , the staggered knockout fixtures (although only with the last 16 and I don’t like that anyway) and worst of all the final on a Saturday. European finals should be midweek.

Oh and I don’t like the way they’ve buggered around with the group stage fixture schedule, the team you play on match day two should be the team you play in the final group game, not the team you play on match day one.

Whilst I agree with that, it’s clear he’s lost the dressing room at this point and whilst there are structural issues at the club that run far deeper than him…the players have downed tools. Not all of them…there are players like Rashford who are clearly professionals. But selfish lumps like Casemiro are just trouble makers and it’s easier to get rid of Ten Haag at this point

One thing I think could improve VAR would be the ref being allowed to request another look, rather than being advised to have one.

Just for them to be honest and say, "not sure about that one, I'll have to look at it again" rather than immediately committing to a decision that then needs to be overturned it it's wrong.

They'd still have the option of making a decision that needs overturning, but it would stop this whole nonsense of the refs not making a decision and leaving it to VAR, who then decide there's not enough evidence to overturn the onfield decision when in reality, there was no onfield decision.

There is something different about football - the flow of it and the culture/attitude towards referees. It does make it harder to get right.
But they're just getting basic things wrong and failing to use common sense. As Mac said in the match thread, some of it is the laws being bollox.

Just use a bit of common sense - handball surely has to be something deliberate. That's still a judgement call, but right now defenders basically have to have their arms amputated to avoid giving away penalties. It's nonsense. And with offside - if you're having to draw lines and looking at whether a single pixel is offside then just let it go. Right now the spectre of offside is hanging over far too many goals. It's spoiling the match day experience. If the ref/lino makes a glaring mistake then fine, deal with that. For marginal calls just let it go.

They're trying to get everything right when that's inherently impossible.

Yeah the new handball rule for defenders is bollocks IMO, but as far as I know, last night's penalty shouldn't even be given based on that. My understanding is that if the ball bounces off your body onto the arm, then that isn't handball. But still, it was given. That's pure incompetence (or something more sinister) if I'm right.

And I fully agree about the spectre hanging over goals ruining the matchday experience, but offside is a difficult one. We can't have goals like Auba's at Old Trafford being ruled out by an errant flag, and we also can't be waiting 6 minutes for a decision like Burnley and Bournemouth were.

The answer lies somewhere in the middle and no solution will please everyone. The AI used at the World Cup seems like a decent compromise but the PL rejected it for some reason.

Nah as a matter of principle, I think the away goal rule is a nonsense, and not just because we’ve fallen afoul of it (from my count on at least four occasions I can think of).


Totally arbitrary….if you win 1-0 away but lose 2-1 at home, I can’t possible see the logic that suggests the team that goes through has been the better side. I can perhaps see that the other way round because the team has scored in both legs. The one decent thing UEFA did was to scrap it, yeah I can see the extra time complaint but my solution to that would be get rid of extra time and go straight to Pels…might incentivise teams to go for it in normal time

K*** never failed to get a dodgy penalty against us and with those dodgy UEFA refs i see now reason why it would change - also just with him playing for them it would again make it feel a bit like a tie against an English side so I'd rather it was not them

Can’t say I’ve thought about it that in depth, usually when penalties were given against us when he was playing for Spurs it was Son or some other bugger diving.

Plus I can’t really recall him doing it for England…but then again that could be a bit of bias that unless it’s blatant…I’ll think it was deserved. Like the France game last year, it was a case of the penalties that weren’t given
