Same team that started at Brentford hopefully. Though there is some expectation that Rice could start.

Bit of a test that I’m not sure we’ll come through with a second string but meh. Hard to get up for this competition unless you find yourself in the latter stages.

If Rice starts I hope it's not because of the 'maybe he'll score against his old club' thing - those things can go either way and it could be a difficult night for him if it doesn't go well.

I'd save him for Newcastle away tbh and just play kids

3-0 Bowen hatter

I want us to go through purely for the possibility of an away day in the next round. I bought my dad tickets to this one which took us to 4 away points, so the next one will get us to 5, meaning higher priority going forwards. Might even be able to go to a league game for once.

Was on the train with some Ammers fans a few minutes ago and engaged in some friendly banter

One said they wouldn’t normally come out for a Mickey Mouse cup game. But the alternative was watching Great British Bake off or talking to the wife

A good side for this match - I approve

I might have given White a rest for this although Cedric is such a huge step down I don't blame Arteta

Decent header from Havertz which Fabianski tips over

HT 1-0

Bit of a drab game. Silly goal to concede but we’ve mostly been in control. Need to liven up in the final third though.

Why the fuck is Rice coming on. Are we truly trying to salvage this write off?

I mean a heavy defeat to those lot is never welcome, but come on let’s take the loss and think about Saturday

No idea why Rice has been made to suffer the ignominy of this.

Very well put, totally crass decision to bring him on

Although we should have won it in 2011 I can’t believe we haven’t been able to win this thing for so long. I know it’s never been a priority but it’s rarely been a priority for most of the clubs who win it.

Oh well.

Odegaard makes it 3-1 with the last kick of the game.

I didn't watch it really but by bringing on a lot of our 'first team' players, in particular Rice, it sounds like Arteta turned a shrugoffable defeat into a bigger issue - W Ham clearly took the match more seriously which is fine, but if we're going to play fringe players then we should stick to it and letbthem sink or swim
