This an interesting paragraph from the report

"Premier League clubs have also agreed a new deal over sharing revenue from international broadcast deals, which will see any future increases divided according to league position.

Revenue is currently shared equally among the 20 clubs, but the bigger clubs had been pushing for a greater share of the money, arguing they are the main attraction for foreign viewers."

More incentive to do well then as the overseas revenue will soon strip, or maybe already has, the UK stream.

 One of the best manager out there, tactically brilliant, great talent spotter and makes players believe in his philosophy. He's added Lemar and Gelson Martins (on a free as well!) and also Rodri a young midfielder on the fringes of the Spanish team, kept Griezmann, Oblak and Godin. Anyone that manages to pry Simeone away for Atletico will clearly mean business, he's a winner and bringing him in would be a declaration of intent. He's a top tier coach, hence the reason he's was my number 1 choice.

Atletico look like they will be a real force this season and capable of challenging for the CL.

Barca have done some good business too and all this talk of Dembele leaving and coming to Arsenal makes me laugh, reckon he'll probably kick on this season and with Malcolm, Arthur and Vidal added they looked strong.

I'd say it's between the '99 Utd side - you can't really argue with the treble, they got lucky at times but you get that in any cup run - and the Invincibles.
The latter for me, but I am biased. I think that side from 2002-4 was one of the great club sides and, looking back, it shows that Wenger always had some weaknesses as a side that good really should have won 3 titles in a row and a European Trophy.

Marc Overmars

I've watched whole programme now, Miguel Delaney seemed to be suggesting, in the same way Adrian Durham does that 03/04 somehow weren't going for the wins and instead playing for draws and therefore 100 points is a much more impressive achievement. Also not much of an achievement when you lose cup games apparently (of course we played the first XI against Middlesbrough in the League Cup ).

No mention of at least three matches where we conceded last minute equalisers along with the draws that happened after we won the league.

Man Utd weren't that great a team in 98/99 or rather I think there was very little between us and them that season, difference they had were having four regular goalscoring strikers, which goes a long way.

I have a difficulty deciding on this debate thinking about other competitions either; it makes the question ultimately pointless in the first place.

See. I don't have a problem with sportsmen getting gongs per se but FFS wait until they have achieved something, ideally when they have retired and you can properly assess their career. Kane's only actual achievement is the golden boot and that was mostly penalties. He really wasn't that good in the World Cup.
Longer term if he actually achieves something he may deserve something.
Right now it's utter bollocks.

Liverpool make world record profit:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/47168032

If you want to see a well run club, look not further than Liverpool, title challengers, CL final invest in the team by making big signings and now record profit (they spent far more than they brought in incidentally), being successful brings rewards on and off the pitch, who'd have thought it?

They also leapfrog us in terms of revenue into 3rd.

They've won one league cup in the last 10 years
You'd have been moaning your moany tits off for most of that if you supported them...

They've properly challenged for the league several times, have got into the CL final last season and the Europa final the season before and are in the title race this season, on top of that they have a really exciting team, have invested heavily in the squad making big signings and have now recorded massive profits which should allow more investment, all this without the supposed golden goose that is the shiny new stadium and thus much reduced match day revenue.

I'd happily be where Liverpool are right now, they're in a really good place and on an upward curve. That 5-1 thumping should tell you how far behind we are, despite having had this big new stadium for 13 years, it's quite frankly embarrassing to see where we find ourselves compared to them, with no money, struggling to challenge for 4th spot and an average playing squad.

Letters
08-02-2019, 01:19 PM
Overall, of course I'd rather be where they are than where we are. But they've "challenged" before then fallen back. In 2013/14 they finished 2nd, only 2 points off the top. Couple of seasons later they finished 8th.
And it's interesting you regard 1 league cup in 10 years and some finals and title challenges as "success on the pitch" but 3 FA Cups in the same timeframe isn't.
Liverpool have not achieved consistent "success on the pitch".
We're not in a good place and with our owner I don't see that improving, but the way you distort facts to pursue your little agendas is ridiculous.

Gaah. You edited your post, it's quite hard to respond to a moving target.
This part I basically agree with - I'll ignore the slight WUMming.
But just because they've been on an "upward curve" over the last few years, which they undeniably have, doesn't mean it'll continue. I gave an example in my other post of previous "upward curves" they've been on which didn't continue.
And none of this has yet to yield "success on the pitch" in terms of trophies although that could change this year of course.

You know what though, Liverpool changed their managers when it wasn't working, they sold their players for big money and they also don't charge the highest ticket prices in the league, now they have invested heavily, have a team challenging for everything and have made record profits!

For me that's success, yes we've won the FA Cup but we've never been challenging for the league or the CL which is really what matters lets be honest, in fact worse than that we've had to endure regular heavy defeats both in the league and in the CL last 16, I'd more than happily erase the last 10 years of Arsenals' history because IMO they have been awful.....those 10 years have culminated in this, a club with little money, very few decent players and who struggle to even qualify for the CL now and an overpaid, undermotivated squad.

If you think that's a better 10 years than Liverpool you're sadly mistaken.

As I said above though, when it doesn't work or stops working Liverpool make changes, they don't just stick with a failing formula, yes it means up and downs but the ultimate aim has always been to win the title for them and they've invested heavily and have always made it clear that's what they wanted, they aren't just run as a business and yet they have made record profits, it pays to succeed on the pitch and what they are currently experiencing is success of sorts, exciting football, top players and challenging for the top prizes IS success.

That's been the problem at Arsenal, we've not been challenging for the big prizes, we we won the odd cup, but when it comes to the big prizes we've just made up th numbers, miles behind the champions or getting hammered in the last 16, that's been the constant for us in the last 10 years, we don't even have saleable assets from all of this, so in my eyes it's been a total failure on our part.

What's ironic is that we've been run as a business for years and have just been overtaken by a club who are run as a football club first and business second, they're a more successful business, on that basis the people running this business that is Arsenal have been doing a pretty poor job.

Of course. But you know that on the Liverpool boards there's a Liverpool fan version of Zim whining about how they're always challenging but never win anything and :blah:

A week after saving the Spuds from Arsenal overtaking them.

Alas. I liked him a wee bit

According to France Football and L’équipe, Hazard is to join Real Madrid for a 100m euros.

Hopefully that means he tries too hard in the final, pings his hamstring and is stretched off after 5 minutes.

Let's hope he doesn't try hard enough because of his impending move

Tuchel not only hangs onto his job but gets an extension.

Guess it’s a more sensible way of the running the club instead of bailing out after only a year.

Thought he would be pushed out more than bailing out.

Celtic won the Treble Treble, if anybody cares.

Newport 0-1 Tranmere in the League Two Play-off final, Jennings with the winner in the 119th minute.

Also, Steve McNulty.

Another year where PSG get nowhere in Europe then, why they would give this underperforming, unproven guy an extension is beyond me, there are much better mangers available and much better managers that have lost their jobs at PSG after doing a much better job.

Neymar and Mbappe will probably leave now, neither of them seem to get on with Tuchel particularly well.

It is Newcastle though so they'll probably get relegated in the first season of mega money.

So true - you could put the entire saudi oil profit into that club and they'd still find a way to leave their supporters crying into their Newcastle Broon

Great.

This would be awful news, another mega rich owner to catapult a club upwards, meanwhile we have our own penny pinching version. In a few years we might find ourselves behind Newcastle as well unless we pull our finger out. It's pretty much what happened with Chelsea and Man City.

Another summer, another rumour at Newcastle. Wasn’t it some yanks last year? When he isn’t heaving into the nearest fireplace, Ashley knows how to dick tease the barcode fans, while Rafa is left to stick or twist.

85 million for a 28 year old who has 1 year left on his contract and there is huge add ons as well.

Absolutely mad.

They won’t make much on shirt sales (the manufacturer makes much more) but he’ll help with advertising, plus they’ll be banking on a league or CL win or two to cover the costs.

They’re all complicit and there’s too much money involved to boycott.

The football calendar is going to be fucked. It’s already pretty much 12 months a year and then we’ll have a WC bang in the middle of a season in 2022.
