The British side attempted to bribe too. Problem is they were offering Burberry bags instead of bags of cash. The Prince refused to step up.

I thought bribery was how you actually landed these major events. 5 star hotels, all the food and booze they can gorge, strippers, hookers, cars and casinos. Whichever country piles it highest gets the gig. However, I don't think you're allowed to directly offer cash in brown envelopes because that would be immoral and against the rules.

Even so, Qatar should be called off because it's Qatar. What other reason is needed?

McNamara That Ghost...

This is a shocking turn of events that Russia and Qatar were influenced by corruption.

With the season being so out of whack though I guess a December World Cup is workable somehow.

this has to be the most pointless exercise ever, we all know they'll say fergucunt, conveniently forgetting the way the football and authorities and refs handed Moan U loads of points during each and every season... no penalties awarded against them at Old Shiteford for years; roy keane not being sent off in every game; their always getting exactly the amount of extra time needed to get a winner etc etc

I'll never accept that with all the favours they got, there must be several of his titles you could really dispute if you analysed what happened with ref decisions in every game they played, it was footballing bias on an industrial scale

It’s weird how before he arrived at Utd they hadn’t won a title for decades and since he left they haven’t won one.
I guess those favours only applied when he was there. What a strange coincidence.

nothing strange about it, but not for the reasons you're implying, like Mac Overmars says he was a godfather figure who exerted almost inexplicable influence over the footballing powers that be, i guess it came from his background as a shop steard in a scottish factory or something he could push around the toffs at the FA easily, plus teh media adn FA wanted a club to be PPL poster boy adn after blakburn folded it was Moan U.

i never cared much for the way Moan U played under him, it was basically kick and rush with a bit of violence thrown in.

seriously though how can you ignore that only four penalties were awarded against them between 1993-2003 at old shiteford? We're all old enough to remember what it was like

and then there was all that extra time

the one thing you could say about him was that he did motivate players to try hard and keep going until the end etc - all the easier to do of course when you konw the ref won't blow the whistle until you score a winner...

he also managed to get involved when Aberdeen were supposed to be relegated and fixed it so they stayed up

Ollie the Optimist
09-04-2020, 08:43 AM
You only have to look at Mike Riley’s refereeing display in that defeat at Old Trafford in 2004 to realise how much bias there was towards United.

Ferdinand hacking down Ljunberg as he was clean through and no free kick. Rooney dive. Neville brothers hacking down Reyes at every chance.

I'm not denying he had an influence, but he won 13 titles. 13!
5 FA Cups. 2 Champions Leagues.
And in Scotland he won the title 3 times with Aberdeen, a side who had only won one title before he was manager, in 1955, and who haven't won the title again since he left. He also won a European trophy with them, the only one in their history.

He certainly had an aura about him and I'd agree that had an influence with referees, but that's part of what makes him the GOAT.
Wenger did well to go toe to toe for him for 8 years but what sets Fergie apart is that he managed to keep rebuilding teams even in the era of billionaires coming in with all the influence they've had on where trophies have ended up.

If he isn't the GOAT then who is? Really hard to make a case for anyone else IMO.

BBC Football Focus is giving you the chance to choose which classic Premier League match highlights are aired on the show.

Viewers can vote between the best of Tottenham's 5-2 win over Everton in 2005, or Aston Villa's stunning 3-1 win at Liverpool in 2012.

Ah yes. Both Premier League classics that live long in the memory :sarcy:

Yes but I am a bit lost without it or any sport tbf.

I'm getting used to it. Sport was blasted across so many channels 24/7, overdone to the point where it became just another thing to be consumed. Might be nice if it went back to one live match on a Sunday and that's it. That's enough. And get Keys and Gray back too while at it.

Heads up for anyone who was planning on going, tonight's PFA Awards has been cancelled.

So that gives the media a chance to guess at who would have won. They seem to be eyeing up Jordan Henderson for the big prize.

Young player of the year, Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Manager of the year, Alex Ferguson.

Team of the year:
Allison
Robertson - van Dick - Soyuncu - Alexander Arnold
Henderson - De Brown - Grealish
Mane - Salad - Vardy

Yeah, De Brown has been amazing but I guess you have to put him in there because he's drenched in so much media cum. Grealish because he'll probably move to Utd. Vardy because who knows?

Tbf I don't think many people outside Arsenal (and Huddersfield) really know who he was.
And he died before much of our success in the 30s so he doesn't have the sack of trophies to his name that other managers have.

This has all dragged on for so long now that I'm wondering if anyone cares, even scousers?

I couldn't give a fuck, personally. Couldn't care less if they never restarted. Too many important issues all hitting at once to be bothered about distractions like football.

Withe The Second Wave (c2020) on the way I doubt they'll be able to finish the season, unless there's one rule for footballers and another, draconian rule for healthcare workers who are locked away from their families. I suppose they could test everyone before and after matches, test their families, all the staff, the refs and anyone else involved. But the tests are so unreliable most of them would test positive anyway. Or at least a good number of them would. So how would that work? And if they did test positive, how could they go back to their families? Doubt the players would agree to any of it. It's not as if any of them will be roughing it in their multi-million quid palaces.

The average points method should have been used across all leagues and the season's business terminated as normal with titles, promotions and relegations based on what has actually happened. The bit that didn't happen is an Act of God (or the Chinese), so that's the only bit that can legitimately be made null and void. It's pretty damn amazing they don't already have rules for truncated seasons. After all we've had world wars and shit. Makes you wonder what these suits actually do with their time. The have no provisions and can't make decisions. Maybe just sack them and get somebody else in?

Waah, waaah, waaaah!

"Players are "scared" about the prospect of returning to action amid the coronavirus pandemic, says Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero."

Fairly obvious though. Locked down in their mansions with their fashion model wives, indoor bowling alleys, heavily stocked American sized fridges and walls around the gaffe? Bank balance building like a speedo on a Ferrari? Bravely venturing onto social media to report their daily plight?

No wonder they don't fancy going back.

I think what Aguero and Murray say is fair enough, basically they're the equivalent of gladiators being sent out to fight and maybe get maimed or die for the gratification of those watching

I think Murray in particular does a good job of calling out the PL and hypocritical ruggerbuggers in the government

Take the cash during good times, bottle out when the going gets tough? These cunts are behaving as if they have normal jobs. They don't. They are in positions of extreme privilege granted to them by fans who consider them "the equivalent of gladiators being sent out to fight and maybe get maimed or die for the gratification of those watching". What was it Shankly said? "Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it's much more serious than that." And it is. The great distraction.

Football is what replaced the gladiatorial arenas. The circus to go with the bread (and beer). It's slightly more civilised now, though on a moral par. But still, that's exactly what these players are. Meat thrown out to baying crowds. Most of them seem to have forgotten that. They've acquired delusions of grandeur.

PSG have been awarded the French title, pity they didn't go for N&V option...

In the special case of Ligue 1. they might as well award them the 2021 title too while they are at it. These monopolistic teams dont see the correlation between their dominance at home and sucking in the CL. Same goes for Juve. When your domestic league is piss poor you are never prepared for playing tough teams.

the French league is so shit even the Saudis don't want to go there.

I really fear for poor old Steve Bruce. Now the Toons are newly minted. They will want a fancy manager with a straight nose in their dugout. Im still shocked at how well Newcastle have done under Bruce. I pissed myself laughing when he was appointed. was sure they would be in the bottom 3 all season.

Just found out I can pause my sub for Sky Sports while there's no sport. Wish they told me when the season shut down, rather than days before it maybe opening up again. Must have been an oversight on their part, an honest mistake. Bet a lot of people were on the ball though and hit pause at the earliest possible moment. So Sky has lost a ton of cash. Which means they're going to want it back. BT Sports can be paused too. So same applies.

PL vs Sky and BT

I'm thinking this is 99.9% of the reason they want to get things rolling again, no matter what.

On the other hand, Saudis set to outbid Qatar for terrorismPL rights next year. Now the Geordies will have ragheads in charge I suppose. Can't see what could go wrong with having a mountain of Saudi cash tumbling into the game.

The players are too scared to do their jobs. Poor loves.

Quick question. Who here would go and train with Arsenal and play football matches in empty stadiums, with a whole host of extra measures introduced to provide extra safety? For, let's say, £50K a week?

Anyone?

Myself, despite the horrific risks involved, something like a 0.03% chance of death for a healthy young person, I might muster up my courage an take the cash (while enjoying the footie).

Professional Footballers' Association chief executive Gordon Taylor says halves of less than 45 minutes are being considered when football resumes.

Discussions about the Premier League's return are ongoing but Taylor says players are "concerned about their own safety".

"They are not stupid," he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme. "They will put safety first."

The Premier League is hopeful of a potential 8 June resumption.

"halves of less than 45 minutes" - i remember when the World Cup was in the US, they wanted to have 'quarters' instead of halves, so they could fit more ad breaks in

trust me, if the FA is stupid enough to allow this (and as we all know they well and truly are...) the TV people will insist on it becoming a regular change, not just for this season.

football will truly die at that point.

We all know that coronavirus can kill in 45 minutes. So why take the risk? Reduce it to 4 quarters of 15 minutes each, which is clinically safe because everyone knows you can't catch the virus in 15 minutes. Stop the clock each time the ball goes out of play, so the infection doesn't spread. For safety, leave 1-2 minutes between stoppages, which will be a bit boring for viewers but maybe something can be found to fill the gap? And change the shape of the ball and have them throw it rather than kick it because... coronavirus and ventilators. We also need to flatten the curve, so each goal should be worth 6 points.

If we stick with the science and take the best medical advice money can buy, I don't see why football would be dangerous. And if people are still worried, then have the players wear pads and helmets.

You know how ballboys sometimes use towels if it's raining when the ball goes out of play so the player gets a better grip on the ball for a long throw?
Maybe they could do that but dip the ball in hand sanitiser every time it goes out of play or something.

That said - chances of any football player dying or even getting seriously ill from COVID19 - ZERO. Big fat ZERO. And they are all married to fit women. Kids don't get it. So it's only players living with their grandma that have anything to worry about. So I don't know why they are even bothering with all this bullshit because there's no risk. These are guys that charge around the field putting in potentially leg breaking tackles. But they are worried about catching flu.

Also there's a concern that even if they're not allowed in, fans will gather outside the 'home' ground and (shock horror) not observe social distancing rules...

Definitely the biggest pansies to emerge from this crisis are the footballers. If they were the only ones being asked to do their job I might understand their hesitancy, but plenty of essential workers have been out there from day one, some at the very heart of it treating one infected patient after another. Even non-essential workers have had to go to the supermarket or the pharmacy. Footballers are being asked to run around outdoors in high safety environments. They are XXXL blouses. Seems fair, they had a big lead.

Time to end the PL in the only fair way, N&V.

Niall_Quinn
19-05-2020, 07:54 AM
Favourite is a resolution called Weighted Points Per Game. The league will take each club's home and away record separately, and work out both average points totals. It will then multiply those numbers by the respective games left, home and away. This will give them a projected end of season total and league positions will be decided by that.

So while Brighton, Bournemouth, Watford, West Ham and Norwich went to Anfield, lost - in some cases by the margin of a single goal - and came away with nothing, Villa will lose, because Liverpool get the maximum three points, but still come out with 0.53 points. It's a 3.53-point game.

What a terrible shame for all those other clubs who visited Anfield with just three points on the table. West Ham, who only succumbed to an 81st-minute winner; Brighton and Bournemouth, who suffered narrow 2-1 defeats.

A 3.53-point game could really make a difference to their final standing in this imaginary league with very real consequences; particularly as, when Brighton travel to Norwich, they will only be splitting 1.8 points, less than the minimum gleaned from a real game.

Trust the PL to come up with the worst possible solution. Forget it now and just go with N&V before they come up with something even crazier. Season's gone. Tough on Liverpool but we haven't seen a game in months. It's over.

Or, they've always had the option to put 22 young, supremely fir and healthy individuals in a big open space where, as verified by hard data, there will far less risk of harm from a virus than any of the usual risks encountered on a professional football pitch. But if they won't take the obvious path, or can't because of lawyers and other grubby individuals, then shut it down.

Maccy probably said it!
A lot of people are still really in to football and are missing it.
Have to say I've remained sceptical that they'll be able to finish the season but the tide is turning and looks like they will.
Liverpool will win the title and it'll be the dampest and squibbiest title wins ever.

I have to say, I haven't missed it at all. I was going off football anyway, our recent success aside (you do forget how nice it is to actually win something).

Whether it changes by the time the Premier League comes back, I don't know. By the time the end of the season comes round though it seems a lot of places will be reopened (even if they shut a week later because we've all died) so it might work out that the social distanced celebrations are not too dissimilar to the norm. It will b weird for the players with no fans, but I guess its no real different to when City lifted the trophy in Brighton last season.

The weirdest thing will be getting the win which seals the title behind closed doors.
That must be very weird for a player.

Or Domestos, as reccommended by the dumbass in chief.

You don't need Domestos if you're fully up to date with your vaccinations. You've already had plenty of disinfectant injected. The Domestos isn't necessary, or even based in the reality all bar indoctrinated fools cohabit.

Nor me. Haven't once yearned for a match. Hasn't crossed my mind, other than the stories of all the millionaire players cowering at home, refusing to come out because they are "guinea pigs". If anything, this lockdown has accelerated my divorce from the game. I was already sleeping in a different room to it.

Had a "socially distanced" walk with a friend yesterday - Spurs fan.
I was saying I had hoped they were going to do the points per game thing to make the latest and surely funniest St Totteringham's Day on record.
He was saying he hoped that they'd do the first couple of games, we'd lost to City and then they'd declare it too unsafe to continue and we'd finish below them anyway

Could happen <_<

Considering the crooks at the BoE just create money out of thin air and then inject it into the economy to cause inflation and a reduction in the effective money supply, not only will we all be paying to finance those spud cunts, but we'll be paying more as our money becomes worth less.

If we shut down the BoE, which is a vital first step in any kind of recovery plan, they couldn't lend those cunts the money. So let's do that then. A real revolution, instead of a pretend one.

What fun watching Wokeday Supplement.

Can the black guy keep calling everyone racist without saying the word itself, and can the white guy try to get through it without blurting, "Oh shut the fuck up you cunt!" Meanwhile the obligatory female presenter is tutting and shaking a finger, now, now, you naughty boys.

Time for the next segment - oh look, it's about black players. That's what I like, a bit of variety. Diversity, if you like.

Now it's woke it is just so superior to the original.

6 black managers out of 91 in the game. Shameful!

No black referees. Shameful.

If it doesn't change - players will take power! We have been warned.

Wasn't Uriah Rennie generally recognised as the best ref in the English game? Wonder how he managed to get to the top? Must have painted himself white at the interview.

Since then we haven't made the same mistake. Every time a black guy turns up we say, no blacks! Fact. That's happening.

3.3% of the English/ Welsh population is black. 6 black managers is 6.6% of the total. For the sake of equality, we need to sack 3 black managers. No wait, using the new maths, we need to hire 85 more black managers. Then they can complain about the next thing.

I see from reports over the weekend that Liverpool are planning a huge celebration at the Kop to lift the league trophy. They are apparently spending up to £1m on this.

Now in principle, that is fine they can do what they want. However, just a few months ago, they tried to furlough all their non playing staff because “finances were so dire”. On that basis, how can they justify spending a £1m on a celebration?
