it's only the national teams though even there, paying them the same clearly doesn't make sense as the overall quality of the product isn't as good in general, plus it doesn't have the same audience or revenues. although they are growing.

i think i'd prefer to see a good quality woman player allowed to play the men's game and earn the extra money that way. i think that's happening in non-league already over here, maybe it will start to make its way up the leagues and into international football

and it could arguably help stop some of that violent tackling, which wouldn't be a bad thing, although i recall the 'lionesses' got pretty physical when they saw they were being outplayed in some game or other - was it the women's world cup or something?

The revenue is the main point here. The quality is debatable, I actually think woman's football is pretty good. But it doesn't matter how good or bad it is.
If they're getting 60,000 people to shell out £50+ to watch them every week and huge global TV audiences which attract the same level of sponsorship then they get the same money.

There's a particular type of feminism which pretends that men and women are the same when they demonstrably aren't. Very silly.

All Premier League games will be shown on TV in September.

I wonder if they will be able to go back to showing just a select few games a week?

Now that fans will have got used to being able to see their club play every game live on tv, i think the league might struggle to change it back. It’s not like the majority of fans can go into the stadium to watch the game anyway even when fans are allowed.

Suspect this will be here to stay and it should be. The 3pm blackout is a nonsense and also in other countries, they can watch every premier league game live if they want, its not right that those in the UK can only watch the ones sky or BT say they can

doh

the 3pm blackout is to avoid lower league attendances plummeting in the UK - 3pm saturday is the timing of most games in the championship and pretty much all games below that. it's a perfectly fair policy which the people on here who bemoan the PL taking away football from its roots should applaud

but clearly, if people are watching the premier league in other countires that's not a factor...

Except that these days, most premier league games dont seem to be played at 3pm on a Saturday for a variety of reasons. European football, tv picks moving games etc.

I could be wrong but I think two years ago, arsenal only played one game at home at 3pm on a Saturday.

14-09-2020, 10:48 AM
A way around it is just to not schedule any 3 pm starts in the PL. As Ollie correctly infers, we aren’t too far from doing that already.

Also, just how much would televising the 3 pm kickoffs that remain actually affect lower league attendances?

I can’t see too many giving up attending local football to watch the big clash between Fulham and Southampton.

i think that's because we're still regarded as a bigger draw, and so more often on TV, so somone like Aston Villa probably does play a bit more often at 3pm Saturday.

but yes, sure if the PL simply abandon 3pm on a saturday that would presumably solve the lower league issue

Niall_Quinn

I thought there were limits on how often a club can be shown on tv?

I remember in Wenger’s last season, there was nothing left on the last day to play for & sky wanted to show the arsenal game but couldn’t because we had been on tv to the maximum level allowed.

Would be best if fans just turn up anyway. Coppers wouldn't want 40K people on the streets for 2 hours. So the stadiums would be reopened, backed by new science that suddenly emerges. Hanging around waiting for government permission just encourages the bastards, you have to help them along or they'll just settle for what suits them. Also, this would be the best way to build up that immunity in preparation for Covid's (I'm sure, much heralded return) in the next flu season.

Won't happen though. People will just wait for permission to live their lives.

"I made baked beans for the first time," he [Deli Alli] reveals, adding: "I didn't realise how easy it was."

I think I spotted some genuine privilege and it ain't white.

Plenty of people likely reacquainted themselves with baked beans lately, not the type delivered to their door by club valet service, but the type you get from food banks after you've lost your job. I know how Alli is a cheeky, lovable little rogue and his adorable PR machine is merely sharing this carefully crafted reality with us. With a channel subscription, you at least get a number of games per month - along with other sports events. A month of product for a broadly similar price as for one match. When you fork out for a subscription and stole down to watch a match that turns out to be utter shite (which most are), you can simply turn off or over to something else on your subscription channels.

But when you've just forked out £15 for one match, you are pretty much committed to watching, regardless of how shit it is.

Not only that, (lets leave aside the debate over the handling of covid-19), the government wants to avoid households mixing. Good luck with that when your mate has forked out the money - you'll be round and so will a number of others. And you know it will happen - because if you're stupid enough to fork out £15 for a single match, you're probably likely stupid enough to invite your friends around - even if bubonic plague, typhoid, ebola and polio are doing the rounds.

It really is disgusting how much greed drives football. Everyone shafted so these greedy clubs stuffed with greedy players who can't kick a ball get to keep their snouts stuffed in the cash piles. We have a "champions" league where the majority of teams are the losers, not the champions. And they want to expand it with even more losers? How is that a champions league? Should be called a losers league.

I don’t mind that either and I’ve always been in favour of scrapping the League Cup too. I’d rather the Community Shield stay but if that goes then so be it. I mean it’s a huge power play from the big clubs but we’d be part of the in-crowd, so I can’t say I’m that bothered really, morality in football disappeared a long time ago for me.

Sounds like lower league clubs would be taken care of financially so it seems fairly reasonable but in essence it’s probably a glorified bung for compliance.

Find it hard to believe this will even get off the ground though given it needs the backing of some clubs who won’t benefit from it.

Mac76
12-10-2020, 07:55 AM
yeah the League Cup is a complete waste of time for the PL clubs - they ought to just play for it in the lower leagues

i'm not sure why scrapping the Community Shield is necessary - it's just one game - although as it comes before the start of the PL season i guess it can be disruptive for the clubs involved

and the original plan for the PL was 18 teams but there were too many clubs from the 22 First Division clubs that were worried about missing the cut for them to get it through

It all sounds fine and good until you get to the PL voting issue - as soon as you add the bit about the ‘6 long-term shareholder status’ clubs it’s hard to see it as anything other than a coup dressed up as reform.

I’d call their bluff on it - tell them to take out the bit about shareholder / special voting status and they’ve got a deal. Their reaction to that will tell you everything you need to know about how much this is really about reform and the greater good.

Spot on. The idea of some clubs having special rights is totally unacceptable.

A few days ago (6th October) was the 49th anniversary of my first match watching the Arsenal. If this goes through with the support of this club, then I am finished with it because it would be the final sell-out. I want my club to be top, to win, to play great football - but I want it to all be done on a level playing field. It is bad enough with money being pumped into clubs from dubious non-Football sources but this would be the final nail in the coffin.

Legends. Both of them. Was quite surprised by the comments. Bergie and Henry are the two players I'd pay the money to watch, and that includes Messi and Ronaldo because both of them are horrific cheats and that destroys all else. But Zidane was the player I probably marvelled at most, for those one-off moments that defied belief. Zico. Maradona, when he wasn't cheating. Heskey.

Yes, vote to bring back proper football instead of the abject shit we have to suffer today.

Destroys the very alure of playing big clubs in Europe really. Also you can imagine the big clubs regularly resting players in their domestic league for the fixtures in the Euro league which they will inevitably deem more important.

This just puts football further beyond the reach of its core following.

The further they push it away from its base, the less likely it is to be successful. Prior to Covid, we already saw half empty stadiums for European football, here and elsewhere, in both competitions.

It will be much more expensive to run a European league although there is potentially a chance they could administer a cap on wages. But to administer such a cap, they will need a strong culture of effective corporate governance to avoid circumvention of such a cap. Luckily for football, its club owners and game administrators are a shining beacon of probity in anotherwise murky and corrupt cesspit of greed.

You assume they give a shit about the fans here at home. If 20 million Asians hit the PPV button the clubs won't even remember there are fans who grew up with the club. They already yuppified the game, so half the fans are day-trippers anyway. Bet they convert most of the seats to new corporate boxes. Can't stand, can't wave a banner, can't swear, can't be mean to the overpaid tossers on the pitch? Just sit down, shut it and eat your prawn sandwich that cost a tenner?

You can see what kind of slime you are dealing with with the recent PPV shite. Nothing's for the local fans.

Apparently it would just be the same teams involved every year, completely ridiculous.

It would surely destroy the majority of the teams not involved, as domestic interest would inevitably drop and commercial opportunities would dry up.

It’s certainly enough to kill my interest in the game once and for all.

I'm guessing what will happen is that the selected clubs will be allowed to have 2 distinct squads. One for domestic competition and another for the European league. More revenue but more games. Its likely the under 23 team will become the PL team. Maybe Ozil can make that squad.

yes, i work with lots of chairpeople, but it's easy enough to google for a better-written summary than i could manage - e.g. at the top of the search wot i just did: "A chairman is an executive elected by a company's board of directors who is responsible for presiding over board or committee meetings. A chairman often sets the agenda and has significant sway as to how the board votes."

though i'm not sure about the use of the word 'executive' as actually most boards are 'non-executive directors' who direct the paid executives to do the work.

So this is a bit like dad intervening because sonny needs a few more circuits in the gym? Well okay, I dismiss your apology on his behalf because I'm more than aware of the character of the person in question.

Does Arsenal still have the huge BLM banners in the corners at the Emirates? Because that would be strange, given everyone has quietly distanced themselves from the organisation they never bothered to check before giving it a platform across sport. I suppose the banners will have disappeared for the next home game - in the wash, so to speak.

so you're still not answering the question

There was only one question. The answer is given, politely. If you want to, you can imagine I gave it impolitely. Now dad, sonny is fine and sticks and stones, so you can stop covering for him now. He's already lied about his intention and is sticking to the lie. Based on past interactions with him, he'll defend that lie until the bitter end. And if your barking is intended to get me to accept his lie, well that's another end that won't be reached. Nowhere to go.

Although...what's the 'keeper doing? You can't score straight from a throw in, just let it go in and it's no goal.

Well there was a player coming in to attack the ball so maybe he was trying to divert it away from them

Funny goal though

Totally agree, they should scrap the PL as a competition for this season and to keep people entertained just have friendlies

Champions league places should be decided by putting the teams in alphabetical orser and pick the first four
