Sure, you have to achieve something to get there but it’s not exactly open top bus stuff.

McNamara That Ghost...
13-02-2022, 06:59 PM
Well none of them have been recently! Community Shield you can win by not winning anything in the season previous so I don't really agree with that comparison.

There's a world of difference between it being meaningless and celebrating it with a open top bus.

Also, they take it so hugely seriously in South America.

It isn't helped by being slap bang in the middle of the season but it's not exactly a new thing, since it has essentially been going since the 60s with the Intercontinental Cup.

As said, the Brazilians especially going mental for it (I remember Alisson talking about it like it was on par with the CL the mad bastard) so I don't think it's fair to say it means nothing.

I meant when did people start taking notice of it? I can’t say I’ve ever really noticed when it’s been on, but these last few years the media seem to be making more of ‘a thing’ about it? Guess it’s probably just a result of English clubs having been dominant in Europe over recent years so we’ve actually had a regular stake in it?

It sounds like the organisation he's pledging the proceeds to doesn't actually exist yet and, with all the shitty things that people have shown themselves capable of over the last week, it wouldn't shock me in the slightest if he was just using this as a ploy to get the UK government to hold off on imposing sanctions long enough for him to sell the club and disappear.

No sympathy for them - not after singing abramovich chants during the moment of silence for Ukraine.

Also, still waiting for an apology from the Premier League who sanctioned it and all the pundits and journos who gloried in it for nearly 20 years. “Great for competition! Great for the game! Chelsea are winners! Winning is all that matters!” How’s that working out now, you cunts?

That’ll be the real test, won’t it? What’s the plan to get the rest of the dirty money out of our game and stop the brazen sports washing? What’s the plan to make sure this doesn’t happen again? Where’s the condemnation for the rest of the dodgy owners from the media? Where’s the mass walkout of players and managers who refuse to take dirty money?

But Chelsea are now banned from:
Offering new contracts to players or staff
- Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen
and Cesar Azpilicueta see their deals
expire on June 30
-Conducting any official transfer business
-Selling new tickets to any game for any of
their teams - including women and junior
sides (season-ticket holders and existing
ticket holders only)
-Selling merchandise to fans (existing
merchandise can be sold via third parties)
No stadium work or redevelopment
-Spending over £500,000 on security,
stewarding and catering costs per home
match and over £20,000 expenses per away games

Ouch :haha:

Sounds like they are absolutely screwed, couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch!

It's a useful temporary rebalancing but i daresay they'll be bought by a Gulf state with equally deep pockets

The main thing is whether it dents their performance this season, which could help our top 4 hopes, though it could give them a renewed team spirit too...

If I were one of those potential gulf state buyers I wouldn’t be going anywhere near English football right now. Let’s face it, the only thing they’re in it for is sports-washing their reputations and gaining legitimacy and respectability in the West - the very last thing they want is a load of public scrutiny over the source of their wealth and the crimes they’ve committed, and tens of thousands of fans chanting against them every week to a global audience. This issue of ownership isn’t going away any time soon - it’s all directed at the Russian oligarchs at the moment, but it’s only a matter of time before attention turns to City’s and Newcastle’s owners.

I was having this discussion with someone at the weekend, we started talking about football and then moved on to tennis. With the latter he went down the "ThE WoMeN OnLy PlAy ThReE SeTs" road, which I always think is a spurious argument. Because if that's the argument then why wouldn't you pay women and men footballers the same, they're both playing 90 minutes. But that's not how it works in sport, there's no hourly rate. It's not even about ability - clearly the top men in tennis would hammer the top women. The point is where does the money come from to pay them the prize money? It comes from ticket sales and sponsorship. When you have billion pound TV deals for the women's game and they're filling stadia with the same ticket prices as the men's game then they get equal pay. But none of that happens, because people don't care about the women's game. Or not enough. I didn't watch last night because I don't care. If we get to the semi-finals then I might watch (make up your own "they give me a semi" joke here). With tennis it's different, there is roughly the same interest in the women's game as the men's. So fine, they can have the same pay. But that money doesn't come from nowhere, if the women's game isn't generating the same interest as the men's, in any sport, then they don't get the same pay. It really is that simple.

Someone was asking me about the womens football earlier, and I had to find the politest way of saying I don’t give a shit about any women’s sport. It’s slow and lacking in aggression

Don’t get me wrong I hope these bunch of dykes win but I’m not watching the game

Letters
28-07-2022, 05:16 PM
I have tried. And I will watch the final. I’ll even be pleased if we win and a bit disappointed if we lose. But that’s about it. I won’t suddenly start following any womens teams. Some of the technique isn’t bad, but the goalkeeping is generally awful and overall it’s just not that good quality.

The equal pay argument is a silly one. Sportsmen and women are paid depending on the money their sport generates. I always think they “but men play 5 sets” argument about Wimbledon done is a spurious one. Athletes aren’t paid at an hourly rate and by that reasoning why wouldn’t you pay men and women footballers the same? They both play 90 minutes. And it’s not about quality.
Clearly the best men players/teams would beat the best women because biology. What it comes down to is how much money the sport generates. When the womens game attracts multi-billion pound sponsorship and TV deals, when you have fans filling 60,000 seat stadium and paying through the nose to be there then they can be paid the same. Till then they can sod off.

Marc Overmars
28-07-2022, 05:56 PM
Don’t really care but good luck to them. Hope they win it.

What I find funny is how they talk about the womens game in an all encompassed way with the mens. Apparently one of them is close to breaking Rooney’s England goal record , apparently this is the 5th time England have ever competed in a final etc. I even heard some bint on the radio say they can end 56 years of hurt!

Nonsense, they’re 2 separate, incomparable games as far as anyone is concerned. Mens records are mens records, just like womens are womens records.

Oh piss off.

I mean, I support them in as much as I always support England/Team GB in sports. But the amount I care depends on the sport and, in this case, the sex.
In some sports that makes no difference, I think I'd be as pleased if a British woman won Wimbledon as I was when Murray did.
With football, I just don't care about the women's game that much. It's just not as good, I'm not as invested in it. Promote it by all means, but you can't force people to care about it.

Yes interesting that Tennis and Athletics are sports where you probably feel as pleased when a British woman wins as with a man... maybe that extends to most Olympic sports because its mostly about medals for most people, not so much love of the sport itself. But team sports not so much - although I remember watching Arsenal ladies beating Sp*rs - maybe last year (?) and I found myself caring. But that's because of my feelings for the respective clubs...

I don’t care for those that talk down to the women’s game.

Nor do I care for those that try to big it up into something it isn’t.

Judge it by its own merits and don’t try to compare it to something it isn’t. There is a vast difference between the mens and womens game.

i'd urge people to watch the final if they can - i admit i've only watched England-Sweden and France-Germany but particularly in the England game, the standard was pretty good - there were some howlers in the France-Germany game though, but also some very good play

The technical quality in the top teams is actually pretty good. Although beyond that the standard isn't that high. Which is fine, a lot of countries probably don't even have professional women's leagues, or at best they're new. Arsenal ladies have only been professional for 20 years and we're probably one of the early ones. It will get better. I doubt I'll ever care as much as I do the men's game - in the same way I don't care about the Italian league as much as I do the PL...and I don't care about the latter that much these days.

Liverpool won the Community Shield.
Meh.
Didn’t even know it was on

Well, City sold us their two best players so it was to be expected.

What Liverpool won 3-1 Haaland must have had at least 5 goals disallowed then?

Alf Inge Haaland’s boy bit ropey in front of goal but I thought he’d lack a bit physically. The overall game was there, the finishing was however not.

Nunez gives Pool a bit of aerial threat that they previously lacked

You’re actually watching it? Crikey

I’ve had people reference the final in the last few days.

“I didn’t know there was any football on Sunday….oh you mean that”

0-0 HT

Watching in a packed pub, good atmosphere

Germany lost their best goal-scorer in the warm-up

Game's a bit edgy, one or two chances, some yellows, could go either way really

I’m more invested in this than I was in the Community Shield.
I had literally no idea that was happening till a mate mentioned it yesterday.
It’s not the same as the men’s game but why would it be? Aside from the obvious physical differences, the women’s game was all but banned for 60 years.
It isn’t coming home whatever the result today but I hope we win.

0-0 at HT, hasn’t been that great so far.
