I’m working this weekend which is probably just as well, as it feels like everything has gone against us leading up to these next set of games. Additionally PGMOL have been dickheads by demanding that we play in our away strip (because there is too much white in our kit), but apparently Spurs have to play in their Sky blue away kit as well.

We are without what will likely be our first choice midfield in Rice, Merino and Odegaard. And looking into the future, we have to play Atalanta away from home on the Thursday. Because UEFA think it will be a laugh to play the matchday fixtures across three days rather than two, which I’m sure has nothing at all to do with greed over more tv money.

Cunts

Anyway this is team id play against Spurs

Raya, White, Saliba, Gabriel, Califiori, Jorginho, Partey, Trossard, Sterling, Havertz, Saka

AFAIK they only have to play in their away kit at the Emirates, not this weekend.

Oh yes, just read that now.

Still though…ridiculous. You could be colour blind and still not have trouble distinguishing. Maybe if the referees have this much trouble with their sight….it would explain a lot of their “interesting” decision making

I forget, is the comma a permanent thing or more ad hoc “depends if I can be bothered”?

I think I'm sticking with the comma. It's better grammatically and I am a bit of a grammar Nazi, so...

So, 1986-1987, 1987-1988, 1988-1989 were the last seasons where we recorded back to back away wins over that lot

In 1988-1989 Spurs were our third game of the season, and we played them in September

I dunno, if viewed from the side I can see how you might get confused if you look out of the corner of your eye, which obviously you do a lot on the pitch.

A shame, but not a huge deal.

2 points from these games would be good

4 points would be excellent

6 points would be too much to hope for (not with everyone fit/not suspended…would just be tough)

Today is the kind of game we could sneak a win, I think a draw is more likely

I really hope Arteta is pragmatic, stacks the defence and tries to hit on the break, if he shows too much hubris and we play our normal game without Rice or Odegaard it could all be a bit ugly

I don’t think Rice will be that big a loss, he’s not been great in the three previous games. The important thing is to not have Partey sitting in front of the back four or Timber playing the inverted left back role as Partey doesn’t track his runners and Timber is not good at all on the ball, so just making pressure for ourselves

I think stacking the team with defenders wouldn’t necessarily do us much good, we need to play in a way that gives us an attacking outlet. I think spurs will see more of the ball simply because that’s how it panned out the last two times we went there but, I think setting up in a way to completely concede possession to them is a good way of losing 1-0

Califiori hasn’t made the Bench, otherwise I think he should have started over Timber. Other than that, I may have started Sterling instead of Martinelli but hard to know how match fit he is but that’s pretty much what I’d have gone for

Things are looking up then, we can do without someone whose primary feature is giving the ball away in dangerous positions

Honestly would rather have him in the side than Jurrien Timber, Zinchenko can at least pass the ball.

He was part of the reason we couldn’t get out of our own third against Brighton

There is no way someone won't get a red in this game, the ref has been totally incompetent.

If by 70 mins, we still have 11 men and its still 0-0, Arteta needs to give Sterling a chance. Our best chance of winning the game from what I am seeing

I can’t watch because I don’t have the sports channels.
I could listen but never liked listening to football on the radio, I always found it quite stressful as they make every slight half chance sound like it’s heading in. And it’s not that practical with 2 young kids running around.
I sort of followed it on here but my neighbour is ahead of that.

But what the fuck has it got to do with you how closely I follow Arsenal? I had a season ticket for over 20 years, now I follow from afar. I don’t feel any need to enter any “bestest westest Arsenal fan” competition.
Mostly because I’m not 8 years old.

It's not a competition, i agree, just surprised that someone who runs an Arsenal messageboard doesn't watch or listen to the NLD

I was driving and while i get your point about how their voices rise every time there's a shot, i have to admit i prefer it to watching the away NLD, that's the definition of stress

I was working, I was actually doing my best to avoid what was going on. But I can hear people at my local pub, so I know when West Ham have scored if I’m not watching or I know when Spurs are losing

I normally find some dodgy stream or watch in the pub (but then I don’t have kids), I haven’t paid for Sky Sports in a few years (and last few years I got it through Now TV).

the commentary made it clear there was a lot of action and some good play
As discussed, radio commentary is misleading - they always make things sound more exciting than things actually are.
Famously, I didn't see it either (Worst. Arsenal board mod. Ever!), I watched the highlights and from that it didn't look like a classic.
Looked like one of those games which was either going to peter out to a 0-0 or won by the odd goal. Our newfound ability from set pieces made it the latter.

I continue to believe I don't need to justify how closely I follow Arsenal, but in brief...my life has moved on since I started moderating this place. I've got married, had kids. My dad, who I used to go to games with, got too ill to keep going. And just generally I am very jaded by the modern game and the money sloshing around in it. I struggle to care which billionaire's plaything beats which other billionaire's plaything. The whole way the modern game is set up is designed to keep the gap between the haves and have nots as big as possible. It's why I'm more engaged with international tournaments. You can't buy a World Cup or Euros by snapping up all the best players. It's less predictable and therefore more enjoyable.

Mac76
16-09-2024, 09:29 AM
And i made clear in my earlier post that i agreed it wasn't a competition, simply that I was surprised - i don't think that was unreasonable

Why are you surprised when I express my distain for modern football repeatedly and regularly say I almost never watch games these days.
Actually this place is my go to in terms of keeping up with games. I tend to watch the highlights if we've won, or at least drew if it wasn't in an annoying way.

It was a scrote fest....easily one of the worst games we've played against them in recent times.

We won because we slightly edged it on concentration levels and in general we made less mistakes. I repeat, it was not an entertaining game at all, unless you are a fan of the kind of drama the referee was trying to create.

ok fair enough I guess the radio guys were indeed exagerrating plus the crowd noise always makes it seem more exciting - although tbh i think to keep them at bay and win without two key players is a good performance, pretty football or not

maybe I'm just bored of the matchday negativity over here, especially when I've been at home game and then read the stuff on here which often has little bearing on what i've just witnessed

HCZ_Reborn
16-09-2024, 10:55 AM
I tend to agree, having seen extended highlights. It wasn’t exactly a game of loads of chances. They were much better in the first half than in the second, and arguably Brennan Johnson should have scored against us. We lacked presence in central midfield without Rice and Odegaard. They were pressing us high into giving the ball away, Jorginho struggled a bit on the ball.

But our defending was good, we didn’t cough up that many chances. And the game was dead after Gabriel headed in

This is why I never liked listening on the radio. Every slight half chance is made to sound like a gilt-edged opportunity. I find it quite stressful!
When I was a kid I was listening to a NLD on the radio, it was Jonathan Pearce. Someone scored and for a full minute he was yelling so much I didn't even quite know which team had scored.
