As someone who has been a long term fan of the comic Viz, I remember fondly a term found in Roger’s Profanisaurus. To do a Southampton - To score and stay up when you don’t really have it in you.

According to Arteta both Timber and White are in contention for tomorrow, though there’s no timetable for Odegaard return

Anyway 0-3 Mick Channon hat trick

0-3 Archer hatter

It would be good to see some rotation in this, which I think we will, maybe even a start for Nwaneri and/or Lewis-Skelly

Also give Neto a runout in goal maybe

Given what happened against Leicester last weekend and the fact that it’s the international break coming up so not so concerned with resting people, I’d be more inclined towards caution. Dont get me wrong I don’t think Nwaneri or Lewis Skelly starting would cost us a win but I just don’t want to tempt fate given Southampton have come to our place and managed to get a draw more than once in the past

But we shall see. Giving Mikel Merino a start mightn’t be a bad call

That’s ok, Hermansen had the game of his life last week. They still conceded four

Ramsdale to have the game of his life?

I don't doubt it but he's been pulling off very good saves most games and it's still not saved them, let's hope that's the case today

I can see him having a good game but let’s be honest, if we can’t beat Southampton at home then end the season now.

Arsenal: Raya, Partey, Saliba, Gabriel, Calafiori, Jorginho, Rice, Havertz, Saka, Sterling, Jesus.
Subs: Neto, Lewis-Skelly, Tomiyasu, Kiwior, Merino, Nwaneri, Martinelli, Trossard, Butler-Oyedeji

Partey at RB. I thought Arteta was over that. Havertz in midfield was also something I thought was done away with.

Good to see Sterling start and hopefully Jesus can end his drought.

What an absolute car crash of a line up

If Timber or White aren’t fit why not play California there and play Kiwior left

Don’t play Partey at right back

Don’t play Havertz at number 10

Preferably don’t play Jesus at all

I know you’ve never been exceptionally endowed with intelligence but am I to understand you don’t know the difference between an observation and a prediction

Anyway I’m at the game today, so hopefully Southampton are terrible enough that it won’t matter that we no direct link between defence and attack, hopefully Sterling decides that he can put in some effort in a game tougher than Bolton (though not much tougher) have left the right side of our defence and will have no one supporting Saka on the right

However the caveat is that Jesus and Sterling have been shit, so all the attacking play has come from Havertz and Saka

Really? Sterling has made two runs into the box so far, so that is a bit disingenuous.

I can't be the only one watching this wondering what the fuck we are doing with our attack?!?

We haven't had one shot on goal yet and it's not because Southampton have become a defensive wall....

Compared to how many Saka has made, and I’m not even sure one counts, as he was crowded out and had to pass into the middle

It’s because we have Jesus up front, and he can’t hold up the ball and whilst they are not sitting that deep they are sitting deep enough that Jesus can’t run off the shoulder of the last man

Right?

Not that I am defending them over the others (especially waste of space Jesus) but Saka and Havertz have been just as shit then in that regard.

None of them have achieved anything convincing so far. It's been awful.

Saka at least has the excuse that he’s got Partey behind him so he’s largely getting onto long passes from Jorginho or Rice

Havertz is playing too deep, he needs to be up front, shift Jesus to the right and Saka in the hole

The urgency isn’t the issue, it’s having players in the wrong position

Jesus can’t hold up the ball yet is in the centre, Havertz drifting too far wide.

If Trossard isn't injured he needs to come on ASAP.

Partey playing RB has been nice to watch, probably because he hasn't had to do too much running back to do.

Though I've been critical of Martnelli for his obvious poor form, not starting him when choosing to start Jesus is a bit strange to me. I think the two "subpar" players actually complement themselves and usually bring out the best in either one of them.

Sterling though has actually been good...but there is something wrong with the final finishing.

Been nice watching us stay in total control...almost like we didn't miss Odegaard. The 3 DMs with Caliafiori has created an interesting overload....we just need the forwards to make it count.

No shots on target is really an indictment

Not quite no shots, Partey got a save out of Ramsdale just before half time

Problem with Partey at right back is Saka lacks support on that right hand side, and Havertz is drifting wide to provide overlap

Didn’t like the way we lost a bit of control in the second half but the forwards got it done thankfully. Martinelli’s pace made a big difference as the game got stretched.

Havertz is so much better for us up front than Jesus. We look like a completely different team, Jesus has no business in that position anymore. Either use him out wide or not at all.

Apart from anything else Havertz is doing really well up front there’s no need to play him anywhere else.

You need to know someone who can install the app on the Fire Stick and give you an access code for the apps.

It can be temperamental but 90% of the time it’s smooth. Picture quality not always the best but I can live with that.

I like Arabic commentary. I could of course be wrong given I don’t understand the language, but it sounds like they are giving thanks to God for every goal.

Which I suppose would then open itself up to an interesting philosophical question, that if a God does exist does that being involve himself in human affairs.

The bottom line is that Arteta had to play Partey at RB (and gemerally he was perfectly ok despite a poor first touch or two early on) and it's important to rotate players, it's all very well saying there's an international break but many of our squad will feature in those games anyway

Having Trossard and Martinelli, also Merino, to bring off the bench shows hoe much deeper our squad is

Jesus is not showing any sign of improving his decision making and because he wanders.around so much Havertz (who was brilliant yesterday) was almost playing both 8 and 9

Sterling I thought did fairly well, beating his man a few times and if Havertz had.been fully playing up front might well have got an assist, I think he suffered from Jesus not being in the right place

We've had a difficult run and shown we can recover well from setbacks, leaving refereeing idiocy aside it's been a good start to the season

HCZ_Reborn
06-10-2024, 02:47 PM
Disagree. I don’t think he had to play him at right back at all. He could have played Calafiori there and started with Kiwior on the left

But again that wasn’t the biggest folly, that was starting with Jesus and playing him up front.

Sterling looks finished, his pace is gone and he lacks the strength to get past players. Like Jesus his decision making is also suspect.

We can’t have this nonsense kind of lineup again, this was the exact kind of pig headed stupidity that led to us losing at home to Villa. Better sides will punish us in a way Southampton couldn’t.

We’ve been given a potential avenue to winning the title this season with Rodri injured, as always it’s Arteta who will be the biggest obstacle.

HCZ_Reborn
06-10-2024, 03:14 PM
For what it’s worth, I do agree with you about Havertz….though from what I could see he was trying to play more 9 and 10 rather than 8 and 9. I don’t think playing in the hole is where he’s best at all, but he was working hard to link up with Saka.
I really can’t find fault with him this season, he works his bollocks off even when he’s not scoring goals…holds up the ball well and is good at making space for other players. The goal he scored was a lovely strike, and he clearly is the most suitable playing up front….there’s a lot there that reminds me of Giroud at his best.

Marc Overmars
06-10-2024, 03:43 PM
Havertz is deceptively strong too. Think he should be able to hit 20 goals this season. Lacks a bit of pace but if he continues to finish like yesterday then we’ll be fine. It was a type of goal that we don’t see enough from him.

It’s a shame that Jesus has been left behind because I do think there’s a player there however he is not capable of playing up front by himself and there’s really no point in hoping he plays himself into form there.

Sterling did get past their defenders on several occasions

we have lots of games this season so we need to use the squad, so keeping those players involved is essential, i said Jesus is poor but we got our first goal with both him and Sterling on the pitch and there will be other games when we need to rotate and use them and if needs be use stronger players from the bench

It's called squad management, look it up

Partey did fine, Calafiore's defending even at LB isn't perfect so I don't think he'd be much better than Partey, plus we need him on the left IMO, I suspect Timber will be back for Bournemouth so it was only for one game

To do squad management you need a squad, this is why I lose my shit with Arteta signing multiple defenders but leaving us without options elsewhere, Sterling or Jesus are nothing but a liability in the premier league. At most they can be utilised in the league cup or maybe against some of the weaker European teams.

The problem with Partey at right back wasn’t defensive, Southampton offered next to no threat in that regard. It was that Saka had to work his nuts off to get to the ball which he received from long passes rather than having someone at full back who could move forward with the ball.

Calafiori got done for pace by Dibling once but other than that was very effective and although not as effective as on the right, made more sense than playing Partey there.

Arteta cannot put out a team like that in the premier league again.
