I think after the game in September it was probably assumed that this fixture would go some way to determining the destination of the title (although this was a day before we knew Rodri was out for the season). I don’t think there’s many other ways I can express my contempt for Arteta that this is not the case. Regardless of injuries, regardless of cunt referees…this was our title and we’ve handed it to Liverpool. Something I don’t think I will ever forgive whatever we win in the future.
For me this is more humiliating than losing the Carling Cup final to Birmingham City at least that was a one off game, we’ve had plenty of time and opportunity to make up ground….we’ve squandered it

So this is a game I give a fuck about far less than I should. If Liverpool drop points to Bournemouth tomorrow, we will probably drop points in this game. We don’t lose often, but draws feel as bitter to swalllow as defeats.

I will be glad when this season is over. Maybe a defeat in this game will be a coup de grace in that respect

0-3 Haaland hatter

A scoreline prediction that could be realistic

I don’t think it will happen, but it could

We haven’t conceded 3 goals in a game in almost 14 months but doesn’t rule it out happening

I hope we win, tbh.

Must win really, if we're serious about the title. But I fear we'll draw which isn't really good enough in the circumstances.

We can't even guarantee there will be much of a game, given the random refs and their mates. If we can get a fair crack from the officials, don't see why we shouldn't beat this lot. They are pretty shit. Although it would be just our style to help them revitalise a title challenge.

You do talk a load of shit

Oh do fuck off

I’m not stating anything as fact, I’m expressing my view on something. We are a better team than Liverpool in my view, we’ve finished above them twice in a row and despite the fact that they have not significantly strengthened in that time we are nine points behind them de-facto. Yes we’ve had significant injuries and refereeing fuckery to deal with

I know you don’t like this word being used (but that’s a you problem), but I consider that unacceptable. And just as Crocodile Greeky takes the blame for the number of players injured for Spurs, so does Arteta have to take some responsibility.

Just as he has to take responsibility for restraining our ability to score goals even more than it is through overcaution.

And yes it is more humiliating than a one off defeat against Birmingham City in my view, a) I don’t give a fuck about the league cup b) we first found ourselves 9 points behind Liverpool in November we have had plenty of time to remedy that, they’ve dropped 8 points since then

Maybe. But they keep being lucky, remember? Not much we can do about that.
As for the "nine points de-facto" - you called it 12 points when they had 2 games in hand and they didn't win the other game in hand.
Points on the board > Games in hand.

Yes we’ve had significant injuries and refereeing fuckery to deal with
And there's not much we can do about that either. Maybe Arteta takes some responsibility for the injuries but a lot of it is just bad luck IMO.

Well I agree with that. But I think injuries have been a factor there too.

It will be hugely frustrating to lose the title to Liverpool, having been the only side to challenge City at all over the last two seasons.
But talk along the lines you "you may forgive him, I never shall". You're not a Victorian lady. Shall we get you the smelling salts?
Failing to win a title isn't "humiliating".
Honestly, your hyperbole is ridiculous.

You don’t seem to understand. Yes failure is humiliating and unforgivable when we were perfectly set up to be the beneficiaries to City’s misfortune. It was our title to take, we just had to be courageous enough to step forward and take it….and we weren’t.

You think we will get a chance like this again in the next 10-20 years when all the indication are that City are going to be given the green light to cheat sign by the authorities?. I wish I could say we would.

I think we’ll lose if I’m honest. I can see us giving them too much respect, the kind of respect they haven’t been worthy of this season. I reckon we’ll be overly cautious and will find ourselves defending deep and inviting pressure for no reason.

If Arteta has anything about him he should set out to overrun them and get at the soft centre like so many teams have.

Well that's weird because I went on the PL site a couple of days ago and it was Taylor listed. So they must have changed it.

Edit: Actually no, I recall now, Taylor is the 4th official.

But Darren England got the Liverpool match? Rewarded for one of the worst and most suspicious mistakes of the season.

Imagine anyone who comes to this forum for factional information on football

I can’t remember the last time Sunday evening game kicked off at 16:00 rather than 16:30, maybe I’m just subliminally nostalgic

Anyway for those who edit this site, feel free to correct the KO time

Err, you know you posted this right...?

That’s worrying, that autocorrect on my phone would make factual…factional. If your phone did it…whole other story

Anyway. Yes obviously I posted the kick off time wrong, the point being is that I know full well it’s 16:30 given that it’s been I think at least ten years or more since the kick off time for Sunday late afternoon/evening game was 16:00. So as I’ve said possible nostalgia at the subliminal level.

I often like things how they were

19:45 kick off times in Champions League games would be another example of that

Well that as well…although I suspect with that because they are mid week games, it’s about getting home from work but then it’s swings and roundabouts because if it’s an away game you’re going to have to stay overnight

But I also don’t like Friday Night football matches, they aren’t to be fair anything new. I remember us playing on a Friday night against Newcastle about 20 or so years ago.

Nor do I like Sunday 12:00 games

Or Saturday night games, the last game on a Saturday should be at 17:30

I don’t really look forward to many Arsenal games. Especially not games like this

I think if Raya is not available it’s going to be a long game

Similarly given that ive given up on the title (maybe Liverpool would have beaten Bournemouth anyway, but got a huge slice of help from the referee) I have nothing to be worried about, because the stakes aren’t that high

We’ve had three months to chase Liverpool down and we’ve not done it. I think this game reeks of a draw personally

Raya, Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Lewis-Skelly, Partey, Rice, Odegaard, Trossard, Havertz, Martinelli

Can’t complain too much, although my preference would be for Calafiori over Lewis-Skelly, Partey and Rice to swap positions and for Nwaneri to play instead of Trossard.

Subs: Neto, Tierney, Kiwior, Zinchenko, Jorginho, Merino, Sterling, Calafiori, Nwaneri.

Manchester City: Ortega, Nunes, Stones, Akanji, Gvardiol, Silva, Kovacic, Savinho, Foden, Haaland, Marmoush.
Subs: Carson, Grealish, De Bruyne, Gundogan, Reis, Khusanov, O'Reilly, Lewis, McAtee

It's not really his fault Arteta insists on pinning the whole season on his back. He's not a striker, he's actually done okay for a non-striker playing that role, but now he's badly off form and we've been left in a situation where we have absolutely nobody to replace him or even give him a rest. For a club this size it's difficult to believe or comprehend.

Didn't hear anything bad about Partey today so I assume he's playing okay? Trouble is, it's his sort of game, us being far too conservative against inferior opposition. If him being switched to RB means Arteta is going to open the game up a bit then I;d be okay with that.

He'll only bring on Merino and suffocate the game more.

Extraordinary. I think at 1-0 we were too cautious, but from 2-1 onwards I think we just decided “we are taking these to the cleaners”

Haaland is an extraordinary striker, but he’s also a pig faced Wally with silly hair who acted like a complete tool at the Etihad and ended up being trolled for it both by young Lewis-Skelly and by the Emirates stadium

Arteta might have said we don’t hold grudges, but on the evidence of that…he’s lying…that was a punishment beating and it couldn’t happen to a more deserving club.

We're looking for strikers yet we've got a kid we sold this season do a hat trick for Monaco in 15mins yesterday...and I think they were even losing at that point.

It was a very deliberate beat down and Gabriel let it out the bag by screaming in Haaland’s face after the first goal. MLS celebration topped it off, this boy is a fantastic shit house.

One of the most satisfying results in a very long time.

Havertz with the "greatest" miss you'll ever see in professional football.
I mean, obviously that’s bollocks.
Off the top of my head Ryan Giggs against us in the Cup when he literally had an empty net to roll the ball in to and smashed it over the bar.
But it was a bad one. You might want to hit the target from there, fella
He’s clearly lacking confidence. The fact he passed to Odegaard rather than shooting for our first goal showed that. Arguably the right decision but an Ian Wright isn’t passing there.
I’m glad he scored, and it was a good goal. He does work hard but he’s not clinical.

Marc Overmars
03-02-2025, 11:19 AM
Very happy for him that he got his goal, he’s normally reserved with his celebrations but you can tell what it meant to him. Can’t knock his work rate and the fact he’s always available, showing for the ball and looking to make something happen.

He just isn’t a confident finisher though and shooting wide from that chance with so much time and the goal to aim for was horribly poor, at least hit the bloody target and if it’s cleared off the line so be it. Thankfully it didn’t matter on this occasion but you can almost guarantee that it will happen again and will eventually cost us if it hasn’t already.

Yeah. This sort of thing has cost us before, it will do again.
It didn't yesterday and for now let's just enjoy the moment. We're clearly not going to sign a clinical striker. It will almost certainly cost us the title but for now we're clinging desperately to Liverpool's coattails. Need Everton to us a favour this week to put them under a bit of pressure.

Didn't Kluivert miss an open goal against Liverpool the other day?

Yeah, and that Wolves striker missed a sitter yesterday. It happens. But it doesn't always cost the result. Undoubtedly the lack of a dedicated striker has cost us points this season. And Havertz has been the man on the spot more than once, so it stands out. Odegard has missed a few too. We've definitely been wasteful in front of goal, and we can't afford to be given the number of games where we've been less than direct.

plus with Jesus out (who admittedly can't score against anyone except Crystal Palace in any case), there's no back up for Havertz so he's doing too many minutes

 I'm sure everyone can point to misses that were worse than that and it obviously wasn't meant to be taken literally.

However I am glad you can make the reply as I am pretty sure if we'd lost or dropped points in the game you ( or anyone else ) would be unable to (especially seeing as their striker took his only chance which was far more difficult).

I do agree with most of the conclusions on your post though and my opinion on the opening goal was ( and still is) that passing to Odegaard reduced the XG and a proper forward looking for a first goal in a crucial match never does that in a million years (and yes I know Henry & Wright are supporting him on that now, but they would have crucified him if the defender had been successful in impeding Odegaard).

Anyway, one thing for sure is we'll keep discussing Havertz ability ( and decision making ) a lot more now thanks largely to Arteta's negligence with the transfer windows.
