Well, I don’t remember if we’ve lost to a team four times in one season

Lost to United three times in 2004/2005
Lost to City three times in 2020/2021 and 2022/2023
Lost to Liverpool three times in 2021/2022
Lost to Chelsea three times in 2005/2006

It’s not a record I feel like I’d want us to create, in fact I want to beat the sods

No problem with Eddie Howe, done a good job with Newcastle and seems like a decent guy. Would actually consider him as potential replacement for Arteta (not that I expect Arteta to go soon)

Anyway 0-3 Faustino Asprilla hat-trick

I hope we win, tbh.

0-3 Isaak hatter (it's a shame 'some people' can't even think up their own original catchphrase isn't it...?)

In a way it’s probably better for us that this game has a little something riding on it now. A competitive edge should bring us out of our shells a bit more.

Newcastle will definitely feel like they can beat us and the last thing we want for our final home game is to be sent off on our jolly’s with a chorus of groans and a 3rd place finish.

Does that really count as a catchphrase ?

Anyway whilst its rare, sometimes a cover is better than the original

Johnny Cash’s Hurt comes to mind

Plus mine is more creative by invoking players who have been retired for more than 20 years

I have to say that I have developed a real dislike for Newcastle. It's not just that they have bested us too many times recently. I think they are a snide, dirty team, managed by a smug manager - who have been let off the hook generally for being a (questionable) state owned entity. Plus there are the shit decisions they have benefitted from in our games over the past couple of years - including how the likes of Joelinton and Guimaraes are allowed to get away with constant fouling.

Hate them and really want us to win this one.

No beef with Eddie Howe but I do share the other sentiments expressed

Used to like Newcastle before it changed ownership

Marc Overmars

Certainly feels like they are our bogeyman.

Similar to us in many ways too, which doesn’t help when trying to compete in terms of style of play. They’re not a team we can be physical with and shithouse, because they do exactly the same back to us.

Would quite like to spoil their chances of CL qualification.

I actually thought we drew the first game this season.

Well, we're likely to lose this, unless we get lucky, which hardly ever happens.

BTW I hope we score a goal, as being beaten by a team 4 times without scoring is contemptible.

HCZ_Reborn
16-05-2025, 11:41 AM
Havertz seems likely to play this weekend which I think increases our chances

I know the league cup games they beat us comfortably with a strong team but i just think you don’t have the same intensity in those kind of games. And we beat them quite comfortably in the league at home last season

Can we be normal?

Probably not. 1-1.

Rice returns in place of suspended Merino, in only change from Anfield

Havertz on the bench (after three months out, makes sense)

Calafiori on the bench (was he on the bench at Anfield, don’t remember)

HCZ_Reborn
18-05-2025, 02:29 PM
No Isaak for Newcastle, this I have to say is an example of what probably should tip the scales against us trying to sign him. It also does us a massive favour today

Marc Overmars
18-05-2025, 02:52 PM
No Isak should ensure that we don’t lose today but I wouldn’t put my money on it given how woeful we’ve been for the past few months.

HCZ_Reborn
18-05-2025, 02:53 PM
I don’t think we’ve been woeful, just lacking in sticking the ball in the net mainly

McNamara That Ghost...
18-05-2025, 03:02 PM

No Joelinton either.

McNamara That Ghost...
18-05-2025, 03:36 PM
Raya recovered well after an initial fuck up.

Marc Overmars
18-05-2025, 03:37 PM
Raya playing us into trouble. Again.

Decent save though.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 03:41 PM
We have big troubles with Raya. He's a great shot-stopper, but worst in the league at everything else and a complete liability. But Arteta obviously loves him so we go into next season handicapped by the 4-6 points he'll cost us with his bullshit.

All of them have been awful so far. From Saka's stupid attempt to disrupt a throw-in, that could have seen him booked had he succeeded, through to the appalling lack of concentration even with the simplest of passes. Discipline levels in this team are very low.

Marc Overmars
18-05-2025, 03:42 PM
Raya on the beach. Wake up FFS.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 03:43 PM
As for Odegard, somewhere back near the middle of the season he started believing his own publicity. Now a passenger, albeit a talented one of he could be arsed.

Marc Overmars
18-05-2025, 03:45 PM
Odegaard sends one to the moon.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 03:47 PM
Why has Nwaneri been banished? This would have been a great last few games to bed him into the team and see if we should save ourselves 80 mill in the summer.

McNamara That Ghost...
18-05-2025, 03:47 PM
Good save from Raya.

Marc Overmars
18-05-2025, 03:48 PM
Raya makes another good save.

We don’t look comfortable, their direct play is causing issues.

McNamara That Ghost...
18-05-2025, 03:48 PM
Double save from Raya!

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 03:48 PM
That's the Raya dilemma. He'll stop anything thrown at him, but then he'll hand it back to them for another go.

Marc Overmars
18-05-2025, 03:49 PM
Not sure how we’re surviving here. Only a matter of time before we concede under this pressure.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 03:50 PM
Martinelli gave Trossard no chance there. Such a lack of imagination when we are going forward.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 03:51 PM
Not sure how we’re surviving here. Only a matter of time before we concede under this pressure.

Newcastle are cheating. They are playing direct balls towards our goal and running faster than a trot.

HCZ_Reborn
18-05-2025, 03:51 PM
I don’t think we’ve been woeful, just lacking in sticking the ball in the net mainly

No I take it back, today we’ve been woeful. If they had Isaak available they’d be 3-0 up

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 03:54 PM
Odegard is killing us. He always wants to go back inside. Whether he's been told to do that or whether he's just here today because it's in his contract, don't know.

McNamara That Ghost...
18-05-2025, 03:55 PM
Don't bother making a run like that and fail to strike it.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 03:56 PM
Dive by Ben. Sad to see.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 03:58 PM
Also a very strange non-performance by Rice today. Is he injured? Not covering, not moving the ball forward, not doing anything much at all.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 03:58 PM
It's lucky Newcastle aren't very good. Play like this against a competent team and we'd already be cooked.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 03:59 PM
Damn, Rice had options there, decided to pass it to their keeper instead. Such strange decision making.

Marc Overmars
18-05-2025, 04:00 PM
So easy for Newcastle to play out.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 04:01 PM
Well played Martinelli - more of that please.

McNamara That Ghost...
18-05-2025, 04:02 PM
Fuck off with short corners.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 04:03 PM
What's it going to take to see Odegard subbed? Does he have to run up the other end and stick 3 in his own net? He's obviously not on form, maybe doesn't even want to be here. Trouble is, every now and again he does something decent then rides on it for 3 matches. But even that's becoming rare.

McNamara That Ghost...
18-05-2025, 04:04 PM
Short corner comes back. :haha:

So stupid.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 04:04 PM
It's just so poor.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 04:06 PM
Havertz is warming up?????

He comes on. Wins it for us in a stinkfest. Board and Arteta agree striker position is covered for 25/26?

Marc Overmars
18-05-2025, 04:07 PM
Boring telegraphed football. No guile.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 04:09 PM
We are very fortunate the geordies are clueless.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 04:11 PM
I would say easily 75% of our touches on the ball are entirely unnecessary.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 04:12 PM
Well , can't blame the ref for this. And the opposition haven't even bothered roughing us up. It's just a genuinely, grade 1 poor performance.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 04:13 PM
Yes, it didn't work, but that sort of ball right over the massed ranks is what we need.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 04:14 PM
Who told Trossard he has endless time to stand with the ball in the opposition box?

Gilberto Silva  What a player!

McNamara That Ghost...
18-05-2025, 04:15 PM
Djourou there also, looking like a revolutionary.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 04:16 PM
Zero additional time? Mercy?

McNamara That Ghost...
18-05-2025, 04:16 PM
0-0 HT.

That was horrendous.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 04:16 PM
Djourou there also, looking like a revolutionary.

What a... not really.

Marc Overmars
18-05-2025, 04:17 PM
No momentum in the league for months and it shows.

Horrible so far.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 04:18 PM
Martinelli turned up. Didn't do much but he's trying. Trossard, sort of, but still such a frustrating player.

The rest of them? How's the weather lads, send some beach party pics of the bimbos.

At least the could actually piss in the fans faces during the break, so it's official.

Marc Overmars
18-05-2025, 04:18 PM
Would have been destroyed if Isak was on the pitch and also Joelinton with acres of space to athlete ball into.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 04:20 PM
Would have been destroyed if Isak was on the pitch and also Joelinton with acres of space to athlete ball into.

Probably why we are playing like this. The computer worked it all out in advance. If we expend 49.3% energy and get to HT at 0-0 we can have a 0.0000345% energy advantage over them in the second which gives us a 3.289% chance of nicking a scrambled goal.

It's genius.

McNamara That Ghost...
18-05-2025, 04:22 PM
Everything we did in the second half against Liverpool we decide won't be needed here.

Players coasting and far too comfortable.

McNamara That Ghost...
18-05-2025, 04:30 PM
Arteta have Havertz a huge sell making him sound like he is Thanos with the infinity stones.

He has to come on surely, Nwaneri too.

McNamara That Ghost...
18-05-2025, 04:31 PM
Saliba off, Calafiori on.

Marc Overmars
18-05-2025, 04:32 PM
Calafiori on for Saliba

Injury I’m guessing, not that it matters now

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 04:33 PM
Calafiori - now we're cooking with candles!

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 04:34 PM
Arteta have Havertz a huge sell making him sound like he is Thanos with the infinity stones.

He has to come on surely, Nwaneri too.

I think we should shun Nwaneri until he decides to go somewhere else to play. Computer says yes!

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 04:35 PM
We managed to include Raya in that corner. Impressive!

Marc Overmars
18-05-2025, 04:35 PM
Another short corner and this one ends up back to Raya.

Jesus.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 04:36 PM
Second match where Saka has been checked out and sipping martinis.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 04:38 PM
Have we really come out here and said a draw will do because goal difference gets us through?

If so, if we can bring that attitude into next season, well... It's on!

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 04:42 PM
So Arteta looked at that forst half and concluded, more of the same boys!

McNamara That Ghost...
18-05-2025, 04:42 PM
RICE!!!

Wow.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 04:42 PM
Fucking Rice wakes up!

Eventually!

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 04:43 PM
Rice is the real deal when it comes to striking a ball. We need to utilise that next season.

Arteta's going to put him in goal, isn't he?

Marc Overmars
18-05-2025, 04:44 PM
Rice’s tekkers when shooting across the ball is elite.

21_GOONER_SALUTE
18-05-2025, 04:44 PM
Great hit by Rice....despite the subpar performance, his class saves the day

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 04:45 PM
Jesus - Trossard literately did everything wrong there! You have to practise fucking it up that badly.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 04:46 PM
Okay, we're kicking the ball towards their goal and some of the players are running quite fast. This is an improvement.

McNamara That Ghost...
18-05-2025, 04:48 PM
Bit of a tame one from Saka.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 04:49 PM
Saka's a shadow of the player he was. But then again, Rice was asleep then woke up. Maybe Saka will too. They all have such strange sleeping patterns. Surely don't have a nap DURING the match? Do it later!

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 04:51 PM
Newcastle changing half their team. We need to go back to one sub.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 04:52 PM
Who is this ridiculous Hooper ref? He's applying the rule evenly to both teams. Fucking amateur!

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 04:53 PM
Nice by Kiwior. I might promote him to the "trying" category.

McNamara That Ghost...
18-05-2025, 04:56 PM
White toepoke wide.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 05:02 PM
Boring!

McNamara That Ghost...
18-05-2025, 05:03 PM
Saka off, Havertz on.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 05:03 PM
Geordies are REALLY shite. Do they only have one player?

These are the third best in the league? How embarrassing.

Saka off, Nwaneri on. About fucking time.

Now Odegard can ignore another player on the flank. Variation is the spice of life.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 05:04 PM
Oh, I thought it was Nwaneri on!

Nevermind.

Yay, Havertz. Goal glut coming up.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 05:05 PM
Kai's first contrib is to give away Newcastle's best FK of the day. LOL.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 05:06 PM
Raya got that wall COMPLETELY WRONG! Lucky. Goal was wide open.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 05:07 PM
God forbid we push on for the second goal. Sleep mode again. Alexa! Wake me up if they score.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 05:08 PM
Arteta booked. Okay.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 05:10 PM
Odegard has been useless, from start to now. Very consistent.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 05:10 PM
Christ, luckily we trained Willock to shoot.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 05:13 PM
We've gone with 1-0. It's genuinely pathetic. Why pay these players so much when you could just get a bunch of pubbers who could defend a 1-0?

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 05:15 PM
Tierney coming on. Let's tighten it up a bit and secure that glorious 1-0.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 05:15 PM
Trossard off. He was energetically ineffective.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 05:15 PM
Our best defender on. We are selling him, I hear?

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 05:17 PM
Ref decides to be a bit stupid after a good game. Now falling for falling players.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 05:17 PM
Okay, okay, Raya quick throw to Martinelli, Martinelli goes at the defender, corner!

YES - do that more FFS!

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 05:19 PM
4 more minutes extra time to cling on against a team we are much better than.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 05:21 PM
Raya being a clever dick. Clever because, okay, buy the foul. A dick, because it wasn't a foul.

Neville gives Raya MOTM because he's super pissed we might win.

Jorginho on for somebody.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 05:21 PM
Willock gets a yellow because they ref forgot he doesn't play for us anymore.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 05:22 PM
Now Raya gets a yellow. Ref must have had a quotient to get filled.

Havertz booked too,

And I've just been booked, even though I'm just sitting here.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 05:24 PM
So the new rules shave kicked in again.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 05:25 PM

VAR can't just go to bed like the clapped out bitch it is. Has to have the last word. But final whistle anyway.

Absolute shambles of a non-performance with that one second where a player actually stepped up and earned his wages.

Drink the urine and feel privileged.

Total utter shit.

Really speaking, it should be a criminal offence for this club to take the fans' money.

Well there are many ways I saw today going, but winning one nil was definitely not one.

Great performance by Raya (I'll forgive the theatrics) and a great strike from Rice.

2nd 3 years in a row, probably only Wenger would admire this record.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 05:31 PM
Rice is speaking as if this was some sort of success. I mean I don't want him to turf it all in and become a plumber. But they better fucking learn some lessons and correct the avalanche of shit we've seen. Don't be coming back next year doing the same shit.

God I hope the football is better next year. Bloody hated this season.

:gp: I struggle to look back at the victories against Citeh and Madrid fondly with the way the season turned out......ah scratch that, probably will still watch those freekicks from Rice once I've recovered from the despondency in a few months.

Niall_Quinn
18-05-2025, 05:35 PM
I see NOTHING here to suggest we are serious title contenders. Except, maybe, everyone else is so bad we could shitheap our way to the top of a shitheap.

I see they have bimbos infesting the studio again. I guess at least everyone gets a decent supply of coffee, and I guess these girls got there by putting out. So a quickie before home time - oh how I envy those pundits.

Well there are many ways I saw today going, but winning one nil was definitely not one.

Great performance by Raya (I'll forgive the theatrics) and a great strike from Rice.

2nd 3 years in a row, probably only Wenger would admire this record.

The first of those we didn’t really expect a title challenge so while having led the table for so long and then let it slip was disappointing, overall there was a feeling of optimism and the classic “we go again next season”

The second of those I don’t think many of us could fault their efforts, we pushed City all the way and made them win it on the last day.

This year feels like a massive disappointment. With City dropping off it felt like the title was there for the taking and we barely challenged.

One thing I will say. I’m having a digital clear out and going through old photos. I found a meme from 4 or 5 years ago - something along the lines of “Arteta has promised that Arsenal will compete in a major competition next season…even if he has to write the song himself”. Ba-dum and indeed tish. I guess the point is back them Arsenal were struggling to even qualify for Europe. This season we’ve got to the semifinals of the CL and finished 2nd in the league and it all feels disappointing.
So I guess that’s a measure of progress. But we haven’t landed the big trophy. It seems increasingly unlikely that Arteta will do it. For me he gets one more season to try but we have to do the right things this summer. Which we probably won’t!

:gp: I struggle to look back at the victories against Citeh and Madrid fondly with the way the season turned out......ah scratch that, probably will still watch those freekicks from Rice once I've recovered from the despondency in a few months.

Nah the Real Madrid tie was a bit of a watershed moment I feel. Haven’t had such an accomplished performance over 2 legs like that in forever. We got a nosebleed against PSG from altitude sickness but we were quite good in the CL overall.

Even against PSG - first 20 minutes of the first leg they were taking us to the cleaners but after that we played our way back into the game and in the second leg we dominated them for large parts of the game. The difference is they have the players to put the ball in the net and we don’t. Which is a bit of a problem at that level. But we showed we can mix it with the best in Europe and with a decent striker we could push on. It has been a disappointing season but there are the makings of a good side there.

I just realised we haven’t technically sewn up 2nd place yet because of City’s game in hand
It would have to be ridiculous results for us to finish below them though

Looking at our accumulative home form last three seasons and it really hasn’t been good enough

Too many goals conceded, too many defeats (Liverpool have lost 3 times, and City 4 times to our six)

59 goals conceded in 57 games. We need to find a way of neutralising the threat of teams that play direct against us, ironically it will help with better finishers and getting the ball forward quick so we aren’t overcommitting and leaving ourselves stretched

I think eventually people have to realise. Modern football is just not that good. We have mediocre people charging big fees. Why is that so hard to accept? It happens in every industry. Name a single industry that is more competent today than it was 50 years ago.

Correct. There are none. Stupid and incompetent people now run things for stupid and incompetent people. It's the same in football. These "mega" teams are absolute shite. That Barca "prodigy" and that Real "genius" - dogshit. Relatively speaking.

And you can't go back in time and say the middle period was wors that the start. Not true. We had Bergkamp and Henry. The pinnacle in any period.

But modern football. Not a SINGLE world class player that can seriously be named. Give it a try and then compare. Oops - you lose. Ans catastrophically bad managers too. Pep - the worst of all time. You know with that Slot bloke, maybe he just said, fuck that, just kick the ball lads, towards their goal. Thatis ALL that would be required today to defeat the tactics of the GENIUS coaches.

The fans are bigging up that dogshit Raya. That's why we aren't going anywhere soon. Zero expectations.

...and yet can't be entirely discounted given how this season has gone

Look at how the ref tried to steal the win from us today at the end, unusually VAR for once didn't play ball

2nd place cup winners again.

God I hope the football is better next year. Bloody hated this season.

It was a difficult season and I'm glad it's effectively over, but there were highlights such as the Madrid game at home and beating Citeh 5-1, and tbh (despite Artet'a's obsessive bleatings) a great comeback v Liverpool.

On the downside, for anyone hoping things might go better next season, apparently the refs are already cooking up ways to send our players off, some BS about only the captaim being able to 'approach' the ref and anyone else is yellowed - cue loads of our players (but ofc no-one else's) being sent off next season...

Well, I don’t remember if we’ve lost to a team four times in one season
I thought this was an interesting question.
Happily it was answered on MoTD2 - no we haven't!

The problem is less the rules themselves, in principle I think it is right that only the captain should talk to the referee. Just as in principle I think it’s right to book players for delaying the restart. It’s how the rules are arbitrarily applied by the referees that is the problem.

However this is not the same as a player being sent off for kicking the ball half a second after the whistle has gone (whilst another gets away with cynically booting it out of play). I think if any of our players can’t behave themselves and go up to remonstrate with the referee when they know they shouldn’t be doing that, then that is more of a discipline problem in our squad.

Arteta needs to get that hammered in, unless your name is Odegaard…stay the fuck away from the Ref. Then we won’t give ourselves the problem where a ref will overlook it with other teams but go for us by the absolute most pedantic reading of the law

Right.
I don't believe there's any particular anti-Arsenal agenda. It's easy to cherry pick moments where we've been hard done by and had players sent off for things that other teams haven't.
I suspect you could do that with any team though, you just notice more when it's your team.
But this is in our control - don't give them an excuse to make the decision.

I think any other season I’d probably agree with this.

The sheer volume of incidents this season, of decisions made against us that haven’t been made against any other team. It’s impossible to overlook.

Prior to February and the Dubai trip I’d have said despite the fact that we hadn’t performed well that this on its own was enough to make it so that Liverpool were leading the table and not us, of course after that time it was purely lack of goals

I think that Arteta blasting PGMOL back in 2023 created a resentment towards Arsenal amongst the more prominent referees and the more inexperienced weaker referees were guided by the more prominent ones. Don’t get me wrong I don’t think it was overt with VAR being recorded I don’t think they’d get away with it anyway, I just think that there was this resentment that guided decision making
