This complete media embargo that wilshere has going on is very weird. I understand the twitter thing - Szczesny and Wilshere have probably been warned by wenger so they've stopped. But why the complete media blackout on wilshere's part? I understand there's a massive overreaction on his fitness updates but that's to be expected. I can't believe the Wilshere can't handle the pressure of it. The little-englander probably thrives on it.

Jack Wilshere has spoken of his immense pride after being handed Arsenal’s coveted No 10 shirt.

The young midfielder is currently nursing an ankle injury which has kept him out of action for a year but he is back in light training ahead of the new season.

Wilshere, who has been with the Club since the age of nine, says that following in the footsteps of some former greats gives him extra motivation.

"It's such an honour for me,” he told Arsenal.com. “Getting the No 10 shirt again at the Club means so much to me as I wore it all through the youth teams at Arsenal.

“It has a special place for all attacking or creative players. I feel proud to wear it now after some real Club legends have worn it, such as Dennis Bergkamp.

“Now I am even more excited about returning to action and honouring the shirt.”

New Arsenal No 10 Jack Wilshere has delivered a cheeky parting shot to Robin van Persie after hailing 'real club legends' to have worn the shirt, and not mentioning the Dutchman.

The former captain completed his £24million move to Manchester United on Friday, vacating the No 10 he had worn for two seasons.

Wilshere, who hasn't featured for the Gunners for more than a year through injury, has left his No 19 jersey for new boy Santi Cazorla and taking on a shirt number synonymous with the creative hub of attack.

Before Van Persie, William Gallas bizarrely held the coveted spot, inheriting it from Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp after the Dutchman retired.

England international Wilshere, who hopes to be fit by the end of October, said: "It's such an honour for me. Getting the No 10 shirt again at the Club means so much to me as I wore it all through the youth teams at Arsenal.

'It has a special place for all attacking or creative players. I feel proud to wear it now after some real Club legends have worn it, such as Dennis Bergkamp.'

'Now I am even more excited about returning to action and honouring the shirt.'

Koscielny, Ox and Wilshere Injury Update #AFC
false:Most of the first team squad were given the day off today, apart from those receiving treatment.

Everyone in last week's squad will be involved, Gervinho's issue was cramp. Alex Oxlade-Charmberlain is expected to be fit after recovering well. The biggest doubt is Koscielny. Whilst the rest of the first team had a day off, he was in receiving treatment. "Kos was getting treatment but moving freely, lets see what happens tomorrow".

Long term injury absentee Jack Wilshere is making fine progress. He's even told staff he "wants to play next weekend!" Although he's currently running outdoors freely without pain, the club are being extra cautious with him to avoid anymore setbacks. He's penciled in for a return to full training in just over 3 weeks time, however I wouldn't be surprised if he comes back quicker.

From that man, AFCamden

I'm no expert but surely running with the ball is actually a massive deal for those who have ankle problems? It's one thing to jog about freely - or even sprint. But to run with the ball, to me, seems like a big step. We'll find out soon enough, I guess.

Hence Diaby's problems.

NOt only are ankle injuries notoriously difficult to mend, they also impact on other parts of the body. Add to that the stresses and strains on the body which football creates (turning / tackling / twisting / Jumping etc), it's a recipe for a breakdown.

Hopefully we're taking this slowly and building him back up.

Well they've already taken extra precautions with him, and it sounds like he's been running pain-free for a while now, but the club just want to be extra-safe. From what I've read and providing he has no more setbacks, I'd be surprised if he was't in full training in about 3 weeks, then it's getting match fitness, couple of reserve games etc and then first team action another 3 weeks or so after that. Happy days

If this guy is ever fit (and it's a big if) he'll take ages to get back to anywhere near what he was before the injury, that's if he does of course. We've seen this before with long term injuries...it's foolish for Wenger to rely on him or indeed Rosicky who has been injured for almost his entire time with us.

Why does Wenger never plan for something which has become almost inevitable?

Ah come on, how many seasons have we had these injury problems, these aren't setbacks these are part of the course. I'd rather have too many good players than not enough, we're relying on a guy who's been out over a year to come back and have a big influence on our season....hardly realistic.

Almost every long term injured player takes a long time to get back to form and fitness (if he ever does), that's if he doesn't pick up another injury (which is quite common). We've seen it with a quite a few of our own players now.

From AFCAMDEN, as "controversial" as he is...

Jack's back in full training, and he'll be back to his best in no time. Likely to feature next week #afc
After a challenging 13 months out since breaking down before the Champions League qualifier with Udinese, Jack Wilshere has returned to full training. He joined in last Thursday with the players who played no or small part in the Montpellier fixture, and it was like he'd never been away.

Medical staff have been extra cautious with Jack, easing him back in to training at a slower than usual pace to ensure he doesn't have any setbacks. He's been raring to go for a few weeks and feels like he is ready, although he understands the long-term is important and patience is required. He joined in with full training on Thursday and staff were delighted with him. He's physically stronger now after months in the gym, but that class and finesse to his game is still there. Jack himself thinks he can play in Wednesday's COC tie with Coventry, however it has come to soon for him. He and Emmanuel Frimpong will not be involved, instead they are penned in to feature in Arsenal's U21 fixture away to West Brom next Monday, if they come through this week training in good health and unscathed.

Finally, from the horses mouth. Here's a coach's take on his return. All you need to know:

"Jack is doing fantastic. His ability is still there, with Mikel and Santi both amazed by his quality in Friday's session. He lacks the sharpness and first 5 yards of pace at the moment, but that will come with training with the first team and games. He's already been nut-megging certain other midfielders in training! and it's clear he's still got it. Fans may need to be patient with him as he returns, but we are confident that he will be back to his best in no time"

“He will play on Monday, he will play his first game with the under-21s, maybe an hour or something like that,” Wenger said.

“It's another important step but he has not played for 14 months so we have to calm your [the media’s] impatience a little bit.

“It is fantastic for him. When you are at that age and are out for such a long time, it is absolutely massive to take [for] him and Frimpong.

“Frimpong had two knee injuries, Jack had two setbacks. It is massive for them to come back and for us as well.”

Wenger wants Wilshere to make a steady return to action, and does not think it would be beneficial for him to play in next month’s England double header against San Marino and Poland.

“I think that will be too early for him,” he said. “He has not played for 14 months.”

14 months.

It was obvious Eduardo wasn't the same player after his injury but I thought it was more of a mental issue. Career ruined by that bloody lumbering prick Taylor. It's interesting to here what Wenger has to say about Jack, but he can't be so sure can he? Diaby's injury stems back to that dirty shit Dan Smith and he's never been the same since. But on the flip side, we have Ramsey who made a full recovery. No idea how complicated Jack's injury was, but it's kept him out for a long time and he wasn't done over like Eduardo which is worrying.

went underhill tonight.

wilshere was sublime, its like he's never been away. his composure on the ball and general awareness was incredible. turning players left right and centre and played a few killer balls. played a major part in both goals.

gnabry was unbelievably good. his finish for the first goal was good. he seems quite mature for his age, id say he's in the oxlade-chamberlain category.

hajrovic was a stand out player. had jason roberts in his pocket which tbh probably doesnt mean much but he kept someone with jasons experience quiet all game which shows how good he is. was strong, skillful and composed at all times.

sagna was solid as usual, didn't really do anything in particular but was good when called upon.

santos was woeful at the start but grew into the game.

dench was his typical aggressive self. good squad player.

Wilshere himself went close to an equaliser in the 65th minute, surging into the box and forcing a low save from Blackman. It was a sign that Wilshere's trademark "burst" is gradually returning.

Doesn't sound terribly convincing. I guess a couple more games in the reserves is likely.

There is a 98.45% chance that I am convinced, yes.

I guess his first full game is big news. 14 months out is a bloody long time. There's an u21 against Everton next Monday which he could play, all going well might put him in contention for the Reading game? All said and done, they better not break him.

Very interesting team for this 'specially-arranged friendly': Arsenal: Martinez (Shea 45), Sagna, Squillaci (Jenkinson 45), Miquel, Santos (Meade 63), Coquelin (Yennaris 63), Frimpong, Wilshere, Gnabry, Arshavin (Eisfeld 63), Chamakh (Akpom 45)

I don't think there is any need to panic just yet, not that your panicking!

Anyway, I personally think this season is a write-off for Jack, he's been out too long to be considered a key this season. He will obviously need games in the first team but needs to be eased in gradually and not fast tracked.

It's only now Ramsey is starting to produce decent performances having been out for what 9 months a few seasons ago. Rosicky was the same, it took him quite a while to produce decent performances.

I personally think the burst of speed will come back to Jack once he puts in a regular shift in the team and I personally don't think that will be until next season.

Jack Wilshere has handed Arsenal a massive boost by revealing he is on the verge of signing a new contract with the club.

Midfielder Wilshere’s dream is to become the Arsenal captain and lead the Gunners out of a *trophy drought that is stretching on towards eight years.

Arsenal have been in talks with England international Wilshere about signing a new long-term deal, that will run more than five years, worth £80,000-a-week.

And, despite the club falling to a new low by being knocked out of the Capital One Cup by League Two Bradford, Wilshere is ready to prove his commitment to Arsenal.

The news gives the Gunners and manager Arsene Wenger a huge lift after seeing Robin van Persie, Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri all quit the club – and with doubts growing over the futures of Theo Walcott and Bacary Sagna.

Wilshere said: “Yeah, I’m talking to the club and I probably will be *committing my future to the club in the next couple of weeks. I know the club are going through a bad time, but it’s not a problem for me.

‘I think you’ve seen over the past few years the top players have probably thought they don’t see a bright future at Arsenal. But it’s different for them, they were a bit older than me.

“I’m 20, I’ve still got a long way, touch wood, to go in my career.

“Players like Robin are older and maybe he thought ‘I haven’t got time any more’. And Cesc wanted to go home to Spain, which was *understandable

“But, for me, I’m young and there are older players around me, and also younger *players around me.

“So in the next three or four years, we can challenge for *everything.”Wilshere – who the Sunday Mirror caught up with at an EA SPORTS FIFA 13 Ultimate Team event – has a clear aim at Arsenal that he is desperate to achieve, and insists that his *under-fire manager Wenger is still the right man for the job. “I want to *captain this club one day,” said Wilshere, who will face Reading with Arsenal *tomorrow night.

“I’ve been here since I was nine. I know the tradition, and I have been in the first team since I was young.

“Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying I’m ready to be captain now. But one day, yeah.

“I think we can still realistically win everything we’re in. I know we’re a long way behind in the *Premier League, but football changes *quickly.

“We know in the Champions League anything can happen.

“We can beat anyone over two games, we showed that *before when we beat *Barcelona at home, so there is no reason we can’t do it again.

“Look at Chelsea last year, nobody would have said last December they’d win the Champions League, but they got a bit of luck.”

Asked why Wenger should still be *Arsenal manager, Wilshere added: “For one, every year we’ve been in the *Champions League and no other *manager has done that

“He’s built a legacy at this club. He changed *everything, brought total football to *Arsenal, if you like, the passing game. There’s no question he’s the right man for the job.

“The players have to look at *themselves. The *manager puts a team out – and if the players can’t do it, it’s not his fault.”

Meanwhile, Wilshere insists Thierry Henry can give Arsenal the perfect New Year boost.

STUART PEARCE is set for a tug-of-war with Roy Hodgson AND Arsene Wenger over Jack Wilshere this summer.
Under-21s boss Pearce says he still wants Arsenal midfielder Wilshere to play for his kids at the Euros.
That is despite Three Lions chief Hodgson insisting last week that Wilshere, 21, is in his seniors squad for their June 6 friendly in Brazil.
Gunners boss Wenger would also prefer Wilshere to travel to Rio rather than spend a month with the Young Lions in Israel.
But Pearce will ask Hodgson to let him have Wilshere AND fellow Arsenal starlet Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, 19, for the summer finals.
Pearce said: “We will both look at it at the end of April to see who is fit and who needs tournament experience — and collate the squad from there.
“Will I ask him if I can select my strongest squad? Of course.
“Does that include Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain? That’s down to Roy really. If he says to me they are available then I wouldn’t say no.”

Some have suggested he signed because he wants to play for the club. Much more likely a kid touted to become the club captain and a key component of the International set up was after a solid contract so he could stay in the treatment room though.

My gripe is that Wenger has overplayed Wilshere - despite saying that he wouldn't at the beginning of the season. For me, Jack should have been understudy to Carzola - not an ever present with him.

a young lad who had just come back from a serious injury, out for 18 months, and was put in the deep end straight away with no rest? and people say he knows what he's doing? where was the depth to prevent another injury? we overplayed jack again because he doesnt want to invest in cover.

forget football, its morally wrong. it violates the managers responsibilities; the duty to care for and protect your players at all times. the kid has just come back from a serious injury and you're supposed to protect him. we've seen how injuries to players like michael owen at a young age have savaged his whole career, we should have invested to ensure wilshere had no risk of falling under the same curse. but we didnt, we went penny pinching again and put him straight into the man utd game a week after his come back. not only that, we've continually played him since due to lack of squad depth. what the fuck is our manager doing? what is he thinking? under pressure to deliver 4th so he's happy to risk a players career.

we're lucky we got so many games out of him tbh, riding our luck just like we did with rvp last season.

do we ever fucking learn? why do we have to use up all 9 lives? why do we have to learn the hard way? always the same with this bloody club.

Wenger is at fault for many things. Picking a footballer to play football isn't one of them. All this over playing malarkey is BS. No such thing as overplaying. They are paid handsomely to play football and should be able to do so. Wilshere is hardly ever fit so when he is, you might as well play him before he dies again which he has. Was always going to happen whether he was rested or not. Our players are regarded as pussy ass bitches for a reason.

He's alright, Jack! Wilshere return set to boost Arsenal hopes of top four finish

....He is keen to come back for Saturday’s clash with Reading at the Emirates, but a more realistic target is the home game with Chris Hughton’s battling Norwich on April 13.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is reluctant to rush Wilshere back into action and may decide to leave him out of the Reading match, and the fixture at West Bromwich Albion a week later, to ensure his readiness when he does play again....

IMHO this won't make much difference to where we finish. We pretend that Jack's a Cesc or an RVP - but we no longer have those kind of game changers in the team, and much as I love Jack, he's a fair way from being a genuine one. Don't forget how much a desperate nationalistic sports press can distort things.

We need to get the praise in check. He's not world class and has yet to stamp his authority on that midfield position. He's not vital to that position or someone who we need to keep things ticking over. We've missed Rosicky's presence more and you see the difference when he's playing. If we lose Rosicky next year we'll need to buy a midfield maestro that can fill that gap because Jack, Cazorla and Arteta aren't enough.

He (jack) might not be exactly vital just yet, but remember he's only 21 and has been bugged with injuries which have deprived him of action for most of his short professional career. I have no doubt that if he can overcome injuries and stay fit, he'll be the lynch pin of our team in very short order.

As for Rosicky, a player whom I've always highly rated, no one is questioning his directness in play (something which Jack is widely known for as well), but I'm sure there have been games where he also looked completely out of sorts and wasn't exactly causing things to tick in our midfield. Therefore, I won't place too much expectations on him till he can put together a consistent run of being a bit of a maestro in the middle of the park.

Joe Cole! He had raw talent and was hyped in much the same way Jack is now. Lord knows what happened to Cole but he was an exceptional technical player and most had high hopes for him but it just didn't pan out for him.

Raw talent isn't enough sometimes and Jack still has a lot to learn. This hasn't been Jack's Arsenal defining season and I hate the way the papers are trying to set it up that way. We lack world class talent, every player has been hit and miss, but it's been a group effort with streaks of good form from Cazorla, Theo, Pod, Kos, Merts, Giroud even Gervinho.

Agreed, about talent being easy to spot. The naturally gifted players at our club? Wilshere, head and shoulders above the rest. Arshavin could be even better but he's decided against being a footballer. Ox, oozes talent but like Jack it has to be developed and directed. Then there's... hmmm... lemme see. Nobody else.

Rosicky, Podolski, Cazorla fall into the "almost" bracket. They are technically accomplished but they don't demonstrate the instinctive talent of the previous three. All very good players though. Gibbs might be edging in here, not as a defender but more advanced, wide.

Further down the line, players who have to work harder at it. Arteta, Chesney, Sagna, maybe this Monreal guy (he looks a pretty solid defender), I'm putting Ramsey here because he'll bust a gut in between the howlers and there are flashes of talent. Thinking hard now. Kos? Like Ramsey, a potential disaster zone but he can also be decent.

And then the dog shit. Either because they are wildly inconsistent to the point of being harmful, of because they are so technically gash or stupid they don't really deserve to be on a football pitch.

Giroud (fucking useless full stop), Diaby (kills us with his stupidity despite being technical), Walcott (Mr mouth himself), Gervinho (pointless player who can only deliver a final ball by accident), Mertesacker (so slow it's beyond belief), Vermaelen (mostly because he seems incapable of learning from mistakes), Flappy (tries but lets' face it, he's shit), and I probably missed a few out.

With an endless budget I'd keep Jack and Ox, maybe Cazorla and Podolski (Rosicky too injury prone). The rest I'd fuck out the door so fast they'd leave their shadows behind.

I don't think so.

Should he be an understudy? The best way of fulfilling that promise is giving opportunities to play. He was overused in his first season but that was because he played so well. I don't think he is quite the Fabregas-level precocious talent but at the same time 'flashes' is underselling his season and a half in the first team by quite a bit. Your point about no one being there to aid his development (in terms of playing staff) is fair. That's why Wenger wanted to keep Cesc for another season which would have been really good to watch, though in any case Wilshere was dead last year.

It's linked to what I said about Joe Cole earlier and talent in general. You can see raw talent in players from an early age but you can't assume they will go on to greater things when so young. When Pod was younger, he was expected to go on to achieve great things, similar to the way people are already holding up Jack. It was the same for Rosicky. The boy can play, and will come better than every other player in our team currently, providing he doesn't turn into a crock. The names that are being brought up are all at least 6 or more years older than him and have basically all plateaued at a level below what can be described as world class.

Okay, fine, but I'm not guaranteeing he'll go on and do anything. What I'm saying is Wilshere and Ox would be the two players I'd hang on to above all others. Both are gifted, both already playing at a high level and both with bags of raw talent and potential. Jack's a born leader too. Good players with plenty of years ahead of them (barring injury). Good ingredients for any team. Keep Pods and Cazorla next and stick a gun in Kroenke's face and tell him to hand over the cash then go and build out the team. Play with a bit of style, win something.

Or sell Jack and Ox for big bucks and sign Titus Bramble.

cole was in a very similar position to wilshere right now, although more so for the national team than expected to perform at club level.

mourinho ruined cole. joe was so desperate to prove he was more than a few tricks and flicks he lost all of that for the sake of team ethic and became a workhorse. for different reasons, jack could fall danger to the same thing. what has stood out more than anything else about this season is his work ethic and desire to give his all for the team, more than the eye for a final ball or finished product. there is plenty of time to ensure all of that ability isn't lost but if we keep treading water as a club as we currently are and being so overdependent on the boy, then he could become just an excellent workhorse, which would be a crying shame.

I never thought Cole was all that and whilst I think Wilshere is good I also think he's currently one of the most overrated players around......he's nowhere near as good as some people seem to think, he's young and has time but to date has done little on the pitch.
