Im not going to WUM it like Ach but I think Dempsey is liked because he is decent and has a nose for goal which the midfield lacks. Dempsey isn't world class, but he scores goals and works hard. A player like him would be a valuable addition.
Granted there's better players out there, but we're not going to spend big money on those players so we're not left with a lot of choice. He's premiership proven, his age is an issue however it didn't stop us signing Arteta and people seem to think he was a good signing.
In an ideal world we'd be looking to sign younger, top notch wingers but realistically since that's not going to happen settling for someone who's done it in the league we play in and who can provide goals is good enough.
It does make me laugh that people critisising Dempsey are praising "Sideways" Arteta for doing a good job when its obvious to all that Dempsey is twice the player
