Alcaraz takes the first set 6-4!
Alacaraz takes the second set 7-6 (7-4)!
Alcataz took the third set 6-2.
Fairly inevitable result.
But I did read that Djokovic is both the youngest to reach the semi-finals of all 4 slams and the oldest to.
The baton has clearly been passed to the next generation now but it’s been an incredible career.
Watched the first two sets, you can see that Alcaraz has that problem where he dips within a match, ultimately though just too good for Djoko.
Still at least Djoko's still there competing, not skulking off in a huff when he's started to fade a little
Compared to who?, Federer retired at 40, Nadal at 38
Most tennis players have called it a day by their mid thirties.
Murray despite his hip injury still carried on until he was 37. The only reason Djokovic is still going is because he’s been able to physically last better and because he has that goal of making it to the Olympics in Los Angeles and winning Gold again.
Anyway, another Sinner vs Alcaraz final. Given these two are better than any of the others on tour, barring loss of form we are going to see a lot more of these finals I suspect.
Sinner is arguably the more consistent player, Alcaraz the better player (in terms of variety of play)
That said I didn’t give Sinner a chance against Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final especially after going a set down and he came back and won (and deservedly too)
This is a surface both players do well on, though Sinner has three hard court slams to Alacaraz’s one…the US open and the Australian open are different types of hard court…the US is a quicker surface with a lower bounce.
Alcaraz has been utterly flawless so far, he has not lost a set and has won 82 out of 84 service games
Sinner has been fairly solid but he was given trouble by the two Canadians he played in the draw, Shapavalov and Auger Aliassime. Although even then that’s a relative term compared to how he blew away opponents like Bublik and Musetti.
The last time they played, Alcaraz managed a bagel before Sinner retired injured.
The last time they played in the US open, Alcaraz won in five sets in the quarters of 2022
I predict he will win in four tomorrow reclaiming the no1 spot, I don’t think the gap between them is as big as I thought it was…Sinner is an exceptional athlete and hitter even if he doesn’t have the overall all round game of his rival. Both have great mental reserves but Alcaraz can become distracted easier. Alcaraz looks fitter and stronger than Sinner at the moment and no male player has retained the title at Flushing meadows since Federer in 2008
(Then again I predicted him to win Wimbledon so probably will be Sinner who wins )
A few pointless stats
No one has retained the US Open Men’s singles title since 2008 (where Federer had won it five times in a row)
Since then there have been ten different winners, Nadal and Djokovic with 4 wins each Nadal (2010, 2013, 2017 and 2019) and Djokovic (2011, 2015, 2018, 2023)
This is the third grand slam final meeting between Sinner and Alcaraz (tied at 1 a piece). The most GS final meetings stands at 9 between Djokovic and Nadal (Nadal won 5 to 4 for Djokovic) and 9 for Nadal and Federer (Nadal won 6 to 3 for Federer)
Both these players have won this tournament previously, Sinner being the defending champion and Alcaraz having won in 2022, beating Casper Ruud in 4 sets (his maiden grand slam title). For both players this is only the second time they’ve reached the final
Both players have won three out of the four majors, for Alcaraz it’s (French Open, Wimbledon and US open) for Sinner (It’s Australian Open, Wimbledon and US open)
The US open has over the past 40 years produced fewer five set matches in the men’s singles final than the three other slams (15% compared to 20% for the French open, 22.5% for Australian Open and 25% for Wimbledon)
Since 1985, this is the 10th time the 1st and 2nd seeded players in the tournament have played each other in the tournament, with the 2nd seed beating the top seed on six of the previous nine occasions.
Final delayed because Trump is there.
Many, many people stuck out there for security delays.
Why does that narcissist even have to be there anyway.
Alcaraz breaks Sinner in the first game
Sinner not doing a lot wrong, but Alcaraz gives the same problem to him that Nadal gave to Federer, pushing him back behind the baseline with so much top spin on his forehand, plus he has so much variety…slices, lobs.
Alcaraz up a double break, this set is over and I think the match will be before long
Alcaraz on track to win a grand slam without dropping a set (last achieved by Nadal in 2020 French Open)
Break point for Alcaraz in opening game of second set, after Sinner was 30 love up
Sinner getting pulverised out there
Sinner holds, but really delaying the inevitable
Alcaraz powers through his service game
Sinner has his first relatively comfortable hold, wouldn’t go as far as saying he’s put the brakes on as he still can’t read Alcaraz but not totally lost out there
And Sinner breaks (Alcaraz broken for only the third time in the tournament)
I imagine he will immediately break back
Nope it’s 4-1 Sinner in the second set, we are in danger of maybe having a tennis match
Sinner takes the second set 6-3, Alcaraz will not get a flawless victory in this tournament and we are back level
Alcaraz breaks in third set, the procession has only been delayed it seems
Alcaraz has double break, like with the Wimbledon final…the spaniard dominating rallies
Wow Alcaraz.
Alcaraz takes the third set 6-1.
Alcaraz breaks in the fourth!
That’s the match done I think
Sinner has made a lot of errors but I think a lot of them have been forced by Alcaraz getting into his head, to try and get him to try and end points quickly
Shame this hasn’t been more of a spectacle, but as I’ve said frequently Sinner isn’t on the level of Alcaraz (again Sinner is comfortably better than everyone else on the tour, but he’s also too much of a blunt tool, flat hitting compared to the multiple tools Alcaraz has in his Arsenal)
Alacaraz wins 6-2 3-6 6-1 6-4 and his sixth Slam with it! Outstanding really.
Deserved, Sinner could not live with him. Alcaraz becomes world no1 which is apt because by a country mile he is the worlds best player. Sinner will arguably be feeding off scraps hoping for Alcaraz to drop off, to gain further grand slams
Just saw that only Borg and Nadal have had so many Slams at his age.
