I don't believe the Gustavo deal is happening until he gets his own thread tbh
Does look like we are getting Gustavo......but the more chatter there is, I don't reckon Suarez is coming well not before the start of the season and more than likely ever if we take the Liverpool stance for face value. I really cant see us doing anything but the right way after getting caught with our pants down with the one pound over 4mil bid.....
With that in mind wouldn't we be better advised to start looking elsewhere? at something cheaper? Rooney perhaps? even go in seriously for Felliani, we may not be able to get the ultimate striker anymore but we could strengthen other areas. I still think Fatboy could work playing behind one up top and Felliani would make our midfield better fullstop.
We need players, Wenger has said we are short and we must address that and not with dross/panic buys......Suarez will take up all we have apparently got to spend......
Higuain, Cescar, Jovetic, Suarez, Bernard etc etc were all suppose to be done deals, none have happened, so who knows about Gustavo, there's been so much BS flying around noone knows if this is gonna happen.
Would personally prefer if we went in for Fellaini, he's a monster of a player.
We did go for Fellaini.
We met his release clause but offered him the same wage he's on at Everton.
The gustavo deal is actually believable because whe know he is available and has a fair price. The only question is if he would go to Arsenal
I'd say Gustavo would join us:

I love their [Arsenal’s] style of play and I have been watching them for some time now.
However, like yourself, I do not know what is happening on the other side at this moment.
I am going to counter my own arguement a bit......say we went in for a higher bid/I mean Wenger still is still showing an interest in the guy.....arent things panning out very much how they did when the sharks were after our best, first denials but ultimately a transfer happens?
we have been dicked a few times now, maybe the shoe is on the other foot.....just got to sit it out?
In truth a shambles. Six days to go and we're banking on a one-legged nobody to boost the remains of the squad.

LOL, Man Utd standing up to player power (provided the player isn't called RvP or Berbatov)

:good: Agreed 100%
Quiet day today it seems. Just scanning the metro and they say we are lining up a bid for kondogbia according to their sources in europe (probably goal.com)
Apparently he has an 8m release clause. If thats the case why hasnt he been bought already even if he is a squad filler. Havent seen much but when i have he has been pretty impressive and can play CB as well.
Also why the need to "bid" when there is a release clause of 8m. Or is arene going to bid 5m and watch us lose another i wonder
Gustavo is a step in the right direction, our midfield should be pretty decent with him hopefully replacing Arteta.
Giroud is actually in good form. I'm not too worried about him, sure I'd like Suarez but it aint gonna happen.
What is dumbfounding though is no sign of a CB or GK. Chesney isn't good enough and I'm not convinced that the Kos/BFG partnership is up to it.
Madness.
The keeper issue is a problem indeed.
Kos and BFG as a CB pairing are unbeaten for about 20 games. tehy work well together, as others have said, its the back up im worried about. need a good back up CB
unless wenger is planning on using sagna there as back up, which isnt a bad idea. he was exceptional against sunderland in that position. either way, we need either a back up CB, or a back up RB and good ones at that
Yeah, it also worries me that we don't appear to have any desire to bring in quality back up, I know we have Verms but we definitely could do with another.
Looks like we have Sagna lined up to cover if one of BFG/Kos breaks down. Wenger is such a gambler, why he doesn't use the market to fill the gaps is beyond me.
But have they been tested? Didn't we lose every game against the big teams? Sure, they're fine against the PL cannon fodder but against the best? I'm not so sure.
Bottom line is if we have £70m we should be buying a first choice CB, not a backup. The current CB becomes the back up and we therefore have a better set of CB's. Simple.
I think we need a RB.. I am ok with having Sagna and Verm as our backup CB. We also need a striker... I rate Giroud very highly but we have no one if he is injured. Time to bring Michu home tbh!
well last season as a pair, they were unbeaten. off top of my head, the games they played together, were the last 10 bar villa as merts was suspended i think. so that run included newcastle away, pressure game, and united at home. they also played spurs at home and city away. so against the big clubs, they didnt lose. happy with that.
there is no point changing a winning team (we are currently on an unbeaten run) Kos and Merts have a great understanding of each other, and with the other defenders. i would worry more about getting a good back up option in, because other areas need strengthening, ie attack and a DM. spend most of the money on that rather then a first choice CB as we dont need one right now
So no point signing anyone then using that logic.
I just don't understand the mentality of buying backup. We have £70m to spend. Why not spend £20m on a top, proven CB and make BFG or Kos the back up?
I'm hoping Gustavo, if we get him, will help protect BFG and Kos because tbf they get bugger all help from midfield.
when i say dont change a winning team, i will clarify it. dont change a winning partnership. in the last 10 games, pretty much all of them were draws or 1 goal wins. the defence kept us ahead or level, not the attack. that attack side can be improved.
Arteta gave the defence a lot of help but gustavo would be much better for them. The defence was pretty good last year, second best in the league. we won a lot of games by one goal because the defence saved us for losing or drawing. id focus on getting in better attackers then defenders. its a waste of time improving something that is already pretty good when we need to improve other areas first
If you've not already seen, great article about our financial health - bit long, but well worth a read:

Didn't Pod play as a striker vs City? Where has Pod played for the majority of the preseason?
