This type of debate will never be resolved unless one of them wins the World Cup at which point there's a nice, arbitrary difference between them. You'd think the one more likely to be able to do that is Messi.
I always seem to alternate between the two depending on which one I saw last. They always just seem to raise the bar between themselves. Both are ludicrous players, miles ahead of anyone else.
I hope at some point I get the chance to watch one/both of them before they retire.

I dont think you need a world cup victory to determine your greatness. Best Cruyff, never won WC neither did the dutch trio of Van Basten, Rijkaard and Gullit. Messi [plays for the better national team though so its unlikely Ronaldo ever wins anything there.
Ronalso is incredible, spoilt by an unlikeable personality. Messi is otherworldly spoilt by a bad taste in shiny jackets

For the record on the World Cup thing, I agree with you for the very reasons you state.
But I do think "the debate" will be changed should one of them win it, given that there will be an arbitrary difference between the two. Else it does pretty much come down to which type of player you appreciate more; midget or athlete.
