I've seen Mertersacker play quite a few times, and he's never impressed me. He's slow, his distribution is poor and positionally he's found wanting many times. Moreover, he's a defender who has to play extremely deep, because he's not the type who can nick the ball from an opposing striker and make interceptions. His lack of pace is seriously worrying. I remember a moment in the world cup when Rooney knocked the ball beyond him on the touchline and was just left for dead. He didn't even bother trying chase Rooney because he knows he has no chance of catching up.
