Because Santos in recent weeks has been pretty terrible in terms of his defending. Against an in form Valencia, it's dangerous to hope he suddenly turns it around (and lets be honest, throughout his Arsenal career he's never really filled me with confidence defensively).

yeah so we facing an inform winger who knows his posistion. the best way to counter that is to put someone in who knows the opposite position. in this case left back, instead of a player who rarely plays there who then has to focus on valencia plus learning the new position

Mostly because santos is anything but a fullback. Worst defender in the world by a distance. He doesn't defend at all, he just stands there or jogs around 50 yards behind the play. Dreadful waste of space who wouldn't get a look in at any other PL team.
