Spending money has never been a problem
Spending on quality has
Barca would accept offers (if they're substantial enough) for Dani Alves and David Villa apparently (so says Balague).
Sign him up!
With us and barcelona, its a one way street, We sell, they buy. However we are not averse to kidnapping any special talented teens they have. Why didnt, Wenger poach Messi along with Fabs way back in 2004 then. Dont tell me he was put off by the need to bottle feed him protein shakes at the time. Bad miss.
Wait, that is a joke, right?
Barca had to give Messi growth hormone treatment till he was about 18, i think, otherwise he would have topped out at 4`10". Cost a fortune at the time but it was well worth it I guess.
I think Messi was seen as someone with immense talent and destined for the first team, Cesc was not. There would've been no chance of Barcelona letting him go and by 2003 he had probably developed such an affinity for Barcelona for what they had done for him, he wouldn't have wanted to go anyway.
Having said that, I am sure Wenget will come out with an anecdote soon about he nearly signed Messi but unfortunately tripped over his own feet and knocked himself unconscious before it could be sealed.
We didn't do anything wrong on the Cesc transfer. Barca were just pissed at the rules. In England you could offer professional contracts at 16 whereas in Spain it was only at 17 that you could. So we were able to offer Cesc a contract and he came whereas Barca couldn't pin him down (and they might not have been too fussed at the time anyway). Similar with Merida and Toral.
With Barca providing all the medical shit for all his growth treatments he wouldn't have wanted to go anywhere anyway.
Anelka
Awful waste of a career.

Seeing that Ba cant buy a goal at the moment and that Cisse has left him far behind, that we test Barcodes resolve by bidding for this guy
Forget the apparent low buy out clause, I think we should put in a bid that gets them thinking, he runs, puts in tons of effort and we know can score. He would be a great option to have

SPURS are on the verge of pulling off a major coup by beating Manchester City and Arsenal to the £6million capture of Jan Vertonghen.
The powerful 25-year-old Ajax defender is out of contract in a year and his club hope to create an auction to up the fee.
But 6ft 2in Vertonghen has told the Dutch champions he has set his heart on moving to Spurs.
His agent Mustapha Nakhli confirmed: “There is enormous interest. A number of clubs have made concrete approaches, with Tottenham among them.
“Jan has a few dream clubs. Playing at the top of the Premier League is something he has worked really hard for.”
Vertonghen, who will be named Ajax’s Player of the Year on Monday, was initially tipped to join Arsenal because of his close friendship with Belgium team-mate Thomas Vermaelen.
Ajax are stubbornly refusing to accept the White Hart Lane club’s offer so Vertonghen — who admits he is a Spurs fan — has threatened to sit tight for a year and walk out for nothing.
Looks like we aint getting him
When has Vertonghen said he had his heart set on any particular club? Though I don't understand how he can have multiple dream clubs.
Basically who ever gives him the most money he'll go to them.
I just see it as his agent whoring him around so they get the best deal.
I mean he knows a few prem clubs want him so which ever one he end up at If he does. He can then say they are my dream club and save face.
Centre-back might not be the most obvious point of concern, but I'd like us to sign Vertonghen. Well, going by what everyone says, never seen the bloke play. There's no substitute for good substitutes. But I think everyone wants our squad to be leaner and possessing more super quality. Our game places a lot on the centre-backs being good in possession and starting attacks. When one of Vermaelen or Koscielny don't play, some pubber comes in with no technique at all. And obviously Djourou and Squillaci aren't very good anyway. Say someone was generous enough to take them off our hands, we could have 3 + Vertonghen + Ignazi. It'd be great. But clearly unlikely. Spurs have a more pressing need as their defenders are 50 years old. Let's have a really good additional attacking player and a central midfielder.
Vertonghen can play DM too, so he'd be a good option from the sounds of it. It's about upgrading and complimenting what we already have, not being concerned as to where player x could play or who we already have there. With the level of injuries we sustain, everyone has a run in the team at some point and has their chance to impress. Squad game tbf.
Good post. . .the idea should be to have a squad of players we can believe in. Thing is now. , . When a cb goes down we only have DJ or Squid to come in, it doesnt work, does it?
Veetonghen will give us the quality we are missing. . ,when like this year Merts died and Kos got suspended and if he is good enough will become first team.
Price wise it makes sense, although will go higher, I imagine he wont cost the world and considering we were dallying with similar prices for Samba or Jags, its all good.
TV5 can give us satisfactory cover at lb but we saw that 4 cbs do not work, with that in mind lb is an area of concern. I have mentioned that I think Gibbs has done well recently but his health is a major concern as is Santos's defending. Santos at best is a left midfielder who comes on as a sub. Cover for Gibbs is needed
Vertonghen makes perfect sense for us - could compete for a starting place at CB and provides cover at LB, DM and even left midfield in a pinch. All that for less than £10m. Established international who already plays with Vermaelen and played with him at Ajax. Should fit right in. Only concern might be a history of injury - but then, that means he still fits right in.
Wenger comments on Vertonghen:
WUMger comments on potential new signings:Quote:
“We have bought Podolski. Vertonghen is a defender. He is an interesting player but he is a centre-back.

"We look at all the players all over Europe every week.
“Our next step is to bring Jack Wilshere and Abou Diaby back, and then, if you look at our squad, I don’t feel we are behind anybody else.”
I don't think we should be looking at a CB and by those comments I don't think we are. Need players who can get goals from midfield and attack. Everything else is secondary. Wumger's been pulling out the classics recently. It's a bit annoying that he's still referring to Diaby like he's alive. Shreeves needs to let Wenger know what the score is.

'Wenger Seeks Special Talent'
"There is little movement as you have seen in the market. Clubs do not spend. If a special quality is available, we will buy special quality. We have Diaby, Wilshere, Arteta coming back and they will be like new signings. Do not forget we have also Eastmond and Henderson who can play there also."

'Eisfeld Looking To Make His Mark'
In the absence of Jack Wilshere, Eisfeld will be hoping to prove to the boss that he doesn't need to look far for a new creative midfielder.

Post-match comments: "Diaby and Wilshere have had little setback. They should be back soon. Maybe November, but we do not like to put a timeline on it. I would say 2-3 weeks. Do not forget we have Arteta coming back. And Eisfeld has shown big progress. Not many players move."
