Goal.com saying Roma offered £2m more for Minolas than we were prepared to pay.
Our max was £8m, they bid £10m
We're looking at Winston Reid from West Ham apparently.

Are we boned?
Reid would be fine but we'll have to pay a lot for someone who probably isn't ever going to make it as first choice, in which case Wenger might as well go for Manolas if that's the one he wants.
No idea why we're haggling over these deals when we're in need of back up for a CB.
Merts is unfit, Kos is carrying a slight knock from preseason and Chambers is still very young. We should have signed a CB before selling Vermaelen or at least sold him on deadline day to give Merts some breathing space to get fit.
I have a bad feeling that Wenger isn't even looking for a CB and is happy to go into the season with Chambers and Nacho as third and fourth choice. Chambers has been great but he has also made a big mistake in every game so far that could have led to a goal. He needs time to iron out the creases. Nacho on the other hand shouldn't even be considered as an option...
I suppose Roma might be able to guarantee more first team football for that greek lad, if Benatia (sp?) is being sold, but we should still be able to get someone in? Reid and Alderweireld have both been linked, or I suppose we might look at someone like Schar (at Basle), who was attracting a bit of interest a few months back (and who, like Reid, is down to the final year of his contract)?
Not sure who I'd go for, personally? A younger player like Manolas or Schar would be great, if we're planning for the long-term succession to Per and Kos, but Reid would probably represent the safest bet out of that lot due to his greater experience (especially int he PL)? (Although you could argue that the others have more CL experience?) Reid also looks the most physically imposing option there too, although I have no idea whether it comes at the expense of his ability on the ball - not really watched him that often.
Not sure I'm that keen on Alderweireld? Admittedly he's another one I've not really seen play that much, but my first thoughts are of another Vermaelen / Vertonghen, i.e. another cavalier, Belgian CB from the Ajax academy who seems to fill in at fullback a lot?
The lack of CB cover has already cost us. Kos is the only quality CB we have. Merts is too slow, too clumsy & Chambers too inexperienced. The 2nd Everton goal was down to Merts being too weak & slow to get ahead of Lukaku ( yes, it was a foul but if it had been Kos LUkaku woudln't have got near him ) & then Chambers diving in like a 12 year old. If we have missed out on Manolas for the sake of 2 mill with the obvious need to strengthen in that position - " We are all doomed"
