now the stardust from the alexis signing has faded we can see reality a little clearer, especially with injuries already highlighting the weak spots in the squad.
alexis may do well through the middle eventually but i'm not sure he's ever played there consistently, so on top of his fitness/confidence (apparently being a problem) and the danger of injury (pitching him into a faster league after the world cup every game because we have no back-up) doesn't seem like the smartest approach. we need a strong option there right now, not someone who can grow into the role.
wenger likes to play with the media, we all know that. he gives as little away as possible. a great football politician. so he may well be doing something about it. but he also has previous at committing to players well below the standard required. no-one in their right mind could lose the only proven striker and not sign any sort of replacement when the money is available. time is short of course but we all know deals get done in this last week, so that is no excuse. then of course there is the cm issue and the cb problem which has been sidelined a little as our frustration over the blunt edge upfront at the start of the season has taken precedence.
whatever happens by the end of this week we are going to be short somewhere and we'll be paddling in circles again as before. so far one big signing, a good back-up keeper, a young player with potential and a good right back does not equate to a good summer of using our resources.
