Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger won't be signing Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton despite describing him as "a great player".
The 28-year-old was centre of attention when the two sides drew 0-0 at St James' Park on Saturday as he was involved in the incident which saw Gunners debutant Gervinho sent off.
That came after a summer which saw Barton made available on a free transfer - and linked with Arsenal in some quarters - following his criticism of the Magpies' transfer policy.
In comments quoted in The Guardian, Wenger said: "Nobody dismisses signing Joey Barton but I don't think we envisage doing that at the moment.
"I like the courage of the player. He's a good player.
"Sometimes there's trouble with his temper but he's a great player."
He added jokingly: "Maybe the way to sort Barton out is to sign him.
"Maybe that's the solution."
Please sign him on a 1 week deal so that our squad can smash him in training and tell him to gtfo afterwards.
Would Jadson and Dann be enough to compensate?
I feel we should be after one more player but I think Vinger sees Ramsey with an important role this year.
No. We need to show real intent. Not just for the sake of the fans, but the sake of the players we currently have.
Whilst I don't think we played that badly on Saturday (we defo needed more penetration), it was clear there was still no leadership, and nobody to change the tempo of the game for us.
We badly need some real quality, not just someone to fill a gap for the sake of a few quid.
I would just chuck the lot at some real class. Benzema and Cahill would be excellent. I don't think we need much more in midfield, other than someone who can push the pace up. Something more direct. Arshavin would be exce;;ent through the middle.
BTW, he looked fit as fuck on Saturday. Really slim :faint:
I do think marquee signings is the only way Wenger can ease some of the immediate pressure on him, but since when has he bowed down to what the fans want anyway? He'll still be as stubborn as ever and do the minimal work needed.
Well, we'll know over the next couple of weeks just how ambitious we are.
Meantime, we've got a bitch of a game tomorrow. And I'm not looking forward to it one bit.
no way is or was benzema ever coming to us. he's the perfect target man for mourinho and will have a great season this time.
that sanchez guy looks pretty fucking amazing too
Why the hell are people talking about Benzema??!! Wenger doesn't sign stars - never has and never will. He wouldn't want to come here anyway and we wouldn't pay his wages, forget about it. Same with Tevez.
Wenger is going to have to unveil a couple of players tomorrow to give the fans and players a lift. We're going out otherwise.
I cant help but wonder if we are waiting to see if we qualify for the chumps league before spending? The TV revenue is just silly so we could use the Fabregas/Nasri money to pay off the mortgage for the year and spend the chumps money on players.
