He came from Spain, besides Real and Barca, most other clubs salary average is around 30-40k (and probably alot less when we get outside the top6 clubs).
We average around 60k and City around 90k, so people really need to stop saying that 100k is nothing and that its standard for decent players in todays market.

I thought Malaga were one of those crazy clubs who were throwing money at absolutely everything at the time (before they realised their new owners didn't actually have any, that is)?
-
The owner just realised how much money he would have to throw at it to get even relatively successful and thus decided to withold any further money being used.

Podolski came from Koln in Germany, not known for high wages and he was given 100k which at the time I found strange. Weren't too many people moaning about it though. In fact I heard far more moaning about Theo wanting to increase from 75k to 90k at the time.

Podolski is also an international superstar for Germany, so I'm sure that factored into it.
I think Mertesacker is on relatively high wages too, so international pedigree must count for a lot.

Cazorla, while extremely talented was seen as B-level player in Spain. I can't imagine players outside Real/Barca earn stupid money in La Liga so that's probably why we may have got him on a relatively low wage, as he wouldn't have been earning that much anyway.

On the other hand, if he was white he wouldn't be able to write a book about being black. Swings and roundabouts.
