I remember years ago when refs were still amateurs and there was talk of them going professional I disagreed with a friend who said they wouldn't get any better if they turned pro. I couldn't see how that made any sense - surely if that was their job and all they did was referee and train they'd be better. I still don't understand why, but he was right.
