I like Djok - well, he’s not that likeable at times, but I have warmed to him and I definitely respect and admire him. But his time has clearly passed and Sinner vs Alcaraz will be the better final.

Sinner two sets up
Dinner with 2 set points.
Takes the first one with an ace.
6-3, 6-3
Dinner
Meanwhile Djok getting treatment, probably not in the very best shape but it's more that Sinner's just that much better I think
Could he quit the match maybe?
Djok fighting back with an early break
Unlike someone else we know on here, I’ve always been a big fan of Roger Federer…thats really why I really took against Nadal (although I immensely respect his achievements, especially at Roland Garros). Djokovic?, I first remember watching him about 18 years ago when he reached his first semi at Wimbledon….he was clearly playing whilst injured (had revolting blisters on his feet) but got past players like Hewitt, Baghdatis etc in Marathon matches.
Ear marked him as a player to watch, but even after his first Australian open win. Felt like he wouldn’t ever quite meet his potential, and struggled with injury etc.
Then came 2011 when he was just unplayable, everything you threw at the bugger he’d return
He’s had his peaks and troughs but he outlasted Nadal by being last man standing and he was able to maintain physical fitness to the point where at 38 he’s still reaching the business end of tournaments (the only player doing that back in the day was Jimmy Connors)
So yeah I have no great love for him but no great dislike either, but mainly I don’t want him to win because I want Federer’s 8 Wimbledon titles to stand alone (although Alcaraz could just as easily challenge that). He played in some fantastic matches, the best of those in my view being the 2012 Australian open final which was a punishing match of almost six hours…at the award ceremony neither he or Nadal could even stand.
Even though he beat Murray, I did kind of think “good for him” when he completed the career grand slam at the French open
Yes. I had to miss a bit, came back and Djok is 3-0 up!
And has a break point
Oh Djok. Sinner breaks back.
And now Djok is going full “old man yells at cloud”.
Djok loses his serve
3-2 with Sinner to serve
I wonder how Leonardo Di Caprio got a ticket?
Must have been lucky in the ballot I guess
3-0 to Djok when I started watching again.
Sinner now 5-3 up
Match point for Sinner
Saved. Deuce
Djok does hold in the end.
Sinner to serve for the match
Which he does without much fuss
Djokovic looked resigned but fairly magnanimous
Anyway got the final I wanted
I think Alcaraz is favourite and have to say despite early wobble against Fognini, he deserves it….just been a level above everyone. Sinner, I think he’s lucky to be there in truth….i don’t know if it was injury or whether he was found out somewhat, but should have lost to Dimitrov.
But we shall see. If Sinner wants a chance, he will have to do it in 3 sets, 4 at most…he doesn’t have a good record in 5 sets, Alcaraz does. He will also need to put aside the head to head record which is heavily in Alcaraz’s favour (although Sinner beat him the last time they played at Wimbledon)
Swiatek takes the first set of the ladies’ final 6-0
Anisimova got 33% of her first serves in
And now it’s 3-0 in the second, she’s been broken twice in the second set.
This could be the worst final in Wimbledon history
5-0 :haha:
Swaitek will serve for a 6-0, 6-0 :haha:
I’d be wanting my money back if I’d paid to watch this.
Yep.
6-0, 6-0.
Didn’t even take an hour.
I’d be wanting my money back.
What a wipeout
It’s the only ladies’ game I’ve watched all tournament. Shame it was probably the worst one in the entire fortnight
But equal pay. What a joke.
This was a particularly poor final but that is unusual.
When the serve volley game was rife in the men’a game I actually preferred the women’s game. Now I think the men’s is better.
But the only relevant thing is the level of interest. If the ticket prices are the same and the sponsorship deals are too then I have no issue with them getting equal pay. There’s the 3 sets vs 5 argument but I don’t buy that. You can’t work out any sensible hourly rate for top sportsmen or women.
I actually do think the 3 vs 5 sets thing is a factor, it has to be
Personally I'd be happy to see the men's matches be best of 3, it's very rare you get a turnaround if someone's two sets down
It probably is the best argument I guess.
The reason I don’t think it’s that strong is sportsmen and women at this level don’t get paid based on how long they play for and so how long the crowd are entertained for. With sports like tennis that is an unknown quantity anyway. Yesterday’s debacle lasted less than an hour, a better match could last hours.
Ultimately what it comes down to is how much money the sport generates. Women footballers don’t get paid less than men because they’re not as good. The physical differences mean that will always be so. They get paid less because they aren’t selling out 60,000 seater stadiums at sky high ticket prices. Broadcasters aren’t paying multi billion dollar deals for the TV rights. And so on.
If and when the level of interest is the same - and therefore the money generated is the same - then they can get the big bucks. But it isn’t, so it isn’t.
With tennis though the women’s game has always been a lot closer to the men’s in terms of interest level. We all know Billie Jean King, Navaratalova, Graff, etc. I couldn’t name a single women’s footballer from before a few years ago. I couldn’t name that many now!
Sinner vs Alcaraz the second time these two have played each other in a GS final, won’t be the last
Alcaraz serving fantastically well
As soon as I say that he’s not getting a first serve in
Just as well he’s doing well enough on his second serve
5th game, first game to go to deuce
And now Sinner has a break point
Which he takes
Sinner consolidates the break to 30 and leads 4-2
Alcaraz may be down in this set but he’s hit some great winners. Holds to bring it back to 4-3
Alcaraz putting a bit of pressure on Sinner's serve 15-30
