He’s a good player

Is it anymore though?
Only a few years ago people were laughing at City paying £45m for De Bruyne, or Bernardo Silva, or us paying £35m for Mane. You've got clubs like West Ham, Palace and Wolves readily able to spend this amount, Newcastle spending £40m on someone who scored about 7 goals last year. Figures above £50m used to be the preserve of the greatest names in the world (i.e. Madrid), now it seems to be more surprising when a fee involving a big club is less than £60m. The numbers don't really mean anything, they're not connected in any way to reality.
Good stuff all this.
Its so much better than it used to be when Wenger was here.
All that's needed now is to get rid of Mustafi in the next 3 weeks and Ozil in January or next summer and it will be even better.
I might have to watch a few matches this season.
Wow, feels weird actually using the Transfer thread for something other than window shopping...
We signed 6 players
“The waiting period is now over”
Main thing I’m happy with is that we bought a good variety of players in different positions and at different stages of their careers. All while working within our means.
Plus we shifted some deadwood and there’s still time to get rid of more.
Well done to Raul and Vinai.
Breath of fresh air at last, for years we signed next to nothing or nobodies and kept hold of underperforming players, we finally seem to have shifted our policy and are getting rid of players who aren't performing and filling positions we need.
Pretty happy with this window, would have loved a top CB, but maybe we can do that in January or next summer with the money we recouped.
As for Iwobi, he's had plnty of time and he just has no end product, the way I see it, it's good to see the old Wenger team being dismantled at last.
Mustafi and Xhaka next please.
Yeah we've shifted our policy because finally the pathetic old manager left a year ago.
He was bloody useless the last 2 years or more, I know that one person on here is still in love with him, but Wenger was useless unless you go back at least 15 years.
Mustafi, Ozil and Monreal all out within a year please.
Don Raul
Ivan really was a fraud wasn't he. Good fucking riddance to that asshole.
Ivan couldn’t manage Wenger, and Wenger couldn’t manage himself.
Now you have a structure.
Still early days, but the strategy is more coherent, and Raul delivered the plan as he said he would.
Lets see whether Emery can organise “if you get four, we’ll get five”
Iwobi confirmed to Everton
Got there in the end! Not a bad summer's work at all considering the silly buggers we played at the end of the season.
Really hope and think there's a chance we might be back in for Upemacano in Jan or next summer which would be nice.
So many fans near suicide at the start of the summer and an almost complete reversal now.
We’ve spent about £300m in the past 3/4 years (not including this summer) but it’s all about how the money has been used. Raul seems to be old school - using contacts and getting shit done. Edu is probably of the same mindset, as in South America it’s all about networking and not just what’s on a database.
We are still way off challenging but as long as Emery delivers - and these players live up to their potential - we are moving in the right direction again.
You’re right. It’s about how the money has been used in this window.
It seems like some thought has gone into it, rather than headless chicken kneejerk signings, with a hope that something will stick.
Emery has to get them playing though. His team now....
Yep good window. We're moving in the right direction.
I'm looking forward to the season now. :scarf:
Wish Iwobi the best too. Never showed what he was about but didn’t agitate for a move, was never a dick off the pitch and had been with us since 6 years old. Just play shit against us and we’re rosy.
think the luiz signing was a bit kneejerk but we did need a new centre back and he shouldn't take time to settle as he knows the league, he knows London. so should be able to hit the ground running and for £8m relatively low on the gamble front.
the club have done well, and I am actually looking forward to the season, anything lower than 4th would be disappointing though. As think United bit of a shambles still and Chelsea totally unproven manager and going to rely on the kids and no Hazard. So if we don't get at least 4th Emery should get sacked.
only downside is the obvious Mustafi, Mikhi and Ozil still being around and no proper back up right back.
You're hoping a 32 year old coming to a club who have a history of not being able to defend properly will mature at the club....really? If so you're in for disappointment, our best hope is that he doesn't have too many of those lapses of concentration he's well known for, or that he plays in midfield where he's very good and mistakes like that can be covered.
Sokratis makes enough mistakes himself, I doubt he'll be shouting at a player of Luiz's experience to be honest.
Personally I'd prefer him to play at CB in an emergency and give Holding/Mavropanos a chance when fit and then move Luiz into Xhakas' position where he'll really improve the team.
Sok would shout in a room on his own.
His relationship with Luiz will either be really cordial or a disaster. Strikes me as a total personality clash.
Anyways we were near anybody but Mustafi territory and Luiz who has played for Chelsea, PSG and now us is not Mustafi.
i do agree with that, but i'd still sooner see him in CB than Mustafi, though that's setting the bar pretty much as low as it can be.
I totally get people's scepticism re Luiz, I just have an instinct it might work out - maybe as you say as defensive midfeilder - if he pushes Xhaka out of the starting lineup that's got to be a good thing
luiz for captain...?
Not sure how much Luiz will directly improve the overall standard of our defending? Maybe a little, but probably not a great deal. My main hopes for his arrival are the indirect benefits...
1) It pushes Mustafi out of the side...
2) It might even push Xhaka out of the side (if Luiz can offer us that same range of passing, but from the back line, then what does Xhaka really add to the side?)...
3) If we can bench Xhaka more often, then we can start selecting more dynamic, more press-resistant CMs to play in front of the defence (Ceballos, Willock, Torreira, Douzi)...
All of which will hopefully mean less hospital passes being made and less forced errors being made in and around the defence.
(I'm also hoping we'll see some indirect defensive improvement from the changes in shape and system we can now work with, now we have wingers and a few defenders who can play in a back 4.)

Great window, Raul really came good in the end. I am feeling positive, back down to earth with a bang on Sunday it is then! COYG!
I am little more positive about Sundays game because of Andy Carroll's absence
I think the Luiz signing is the only bit of business I'm really 100% comfortable with. I rate him and think he's at a higher level than almost all our defenders, but TBH thats not saying much seeing our back line is easily one of the worst in the whole division.
Like Zim said, his well deserved reputation for losing concentration should worry us but I like the way he's always confident in his ability (something he actually does have) and I'm hoping it rubs off on some of our younger players who can actually get better. Though I can't convincingly say our defence will get better with him in it, I can however say I don't see him making it worse than it already is.
I think the singing makes sense as it attempts to address our weakness and most will agree he is better than what we have.
Emery said he’s told Mustafi on three occasions he can leave - we just need to get rid of the fucker now.
