Arsenal goalkeeper Damian Martinez declared himself over the moon to be involved with the Argentine national team after receiving a late call-up to join the Albiceleste for their friendly in Nigeria.
Martinez, just 18 years old and a product of the Independiente youth system before moving to England, received the call after Oscar Ustari suffered a knee injury in training and was ruled out of tonight's friendly. He will sit on the bench for the Seleccion, behind Rojo No.1 Adrian Gabbarini in a team formed from players under 25 years old based in Europe.
Speaking on Tuesday evening after a madcap dash to Abuja, the teenager admitted that he could not believe he was involved in the national team, and that it still felt unreal to him.
"My agent called me, he told me and I couldn't believe him, I thought that he was winding me up. It was an incredible bit of news," Martinez told Radio Belgrano.
"I threw my gloves and boots into a suitcase and I left. I didn't even bring a toothbrush! I am here to test myself and when you are given these chances, you cannot waste them."
The goalkeeper has been training with the senior Arsenal team for just over a month.

Gibbs out of the Under 21s
Will we have any representation now?
Lansbury.
Lansbury should be there, he's the only one though I think as all our other youngsters have decided they're Nigerian.
Ah yeah I forgot about him, obviously. Still time for him to pull out though I guess.
Samir Nasri, Bacary Sagna and Abou Diaby
Poland 0-1 France, June 9
Ukraine 1-4 France, June 6
Belarus 1-1 France, June 3

Tomasz Jodlowiec’s own goal in the 14th minute was enough to give Laurent Blanc’s side victory. Diaby was also a 76th-minute substitute as France beat Ukraine 4-1 on Monday. The Arsenal midfielder replaced Mamadou Sakho and saw Blanc’s side score three goals in the final three minutes to record an impressive away win. Samir Nasri, Sagna and Diaby all started as France drew 1-1 with Belarus in a Euro 2012 Qualifier on Friday. Lansbury played the last 20 odd mins v Spain Under 21s this evening
Really should start. They have looked more lively when he comes onQuote:
Henri Lansbury was a 57th-minute substitute as England Under-21s drew 0-0 with Ukraine in the European Championships on Wednesday.
The Arsenal midfielder replaced Scott Sinclair just before the hour-mark and England looked much more of a goal threat after his introduction.
The point leaves Stuart Pearce’s side third in Group B and needing to beat Czech Republic on Sunday to secure a place in the Semi Finals.
Apparently had a knock which was why he didnt startQuote:
Henri Lansbury was a 64th-minute substitute as England Under-21s crashed out of the European Championships with a 2-1 defeat against Czech Republic on Sunday.
The Arsenal midfielder replaced Jordan Henderson with the game goalless and England went in front just 12 minutes later through Danny Welbeck’s header.
But late goals from Jan Chramosta and Tomas Pekhart sent the Czechs through to the Semi-Finals and condemned Stuart Pearce’s side to an early exit.

What about Henri Lansbury? If he is spending his final year of his contract at West Ham - what does that mean for us? Is it his final year or did he sign an extension? He's 20 but I rate him, always have rated him and watching him and Oxlade-chambermaid link up yesterday I reckon he does have a future with Arsenal - he reminds me of a Ljunberg-type player and I think another year on-loan will do him the world of good - but I'd hate to see us lose him if he is in his final year of a contract. Thoughts?
He'll be sold.
Id keep him but he needed to be loaned out to a premiership club and see how he does. We know how he does in the lower leagues as hes been there on loan plenty of times.
Hes as good as if not better than Cleverley but unfortunately Cleverley has Fergie as manager and Lansbury as Wenger
RVP scores.
Hopefully he gets a few and is subbed so his confidence grows and he doesnt get injured
RVP gets a 2nd
Ramsey also scored
Theo has also looked very good for England
RVP hat trick
4th for RVP 9 - 0 Holland lol
Holland equalling their biggest ever win at 9-0 (vs Finland in 1912 and Norway in 1972).
Decent morale boost for RVP though it is vs. San Marino.
