The fee is about £8.8 million it's subject to a medical according to most respectable media outlets.

Sky Sports is respectable enough imo:

Better than nothing I suppose.
I wasn't so enthusiastic at first due to reports on his lack of pace/acceleration but thinking about how most of our goals were conceded from set pieces last season, this could actually be just the signing we need. :)
At least I've heard of him and he's 6' 6" which will add some much needed height.
Could be a decent signing. Need more but it's a start.
Set to undergo a medical - bbc ticker
8.8 million f*ck me, of all the defenders we could have signed he's got to be one of the worst, well done Wenger.
Let's hope the signings get better from here.......
I've not seen him loads but we do concede a lot from set pieces and he may help with that.
I'll judge him when I see him playing but at least he's an established played and not some kid.
85 caps for Germany says it all and only 26.
As slow as a barge, not particular good at defending...the only thing he has going for him is his height.
I'll be honest and say I don't understand this signing, height is great but a player has to be good at what he does too.
You can't trust Wenger with defenders though, just look at the cr*p he's signed.
Let's get Mertesacker AND Cahill, enough fucking around FFS!
Easily, Germany lack quality defenders.
Remember him in 2006 the German defence was a shambles the CB partnership was the problem.
It's not the fact he doesn't play for a top club, it's the fact I've seen him and never been impressed, some of the other players we've been linked with are more promising (even this Santos bloke) but this guy gets a big thumbs down from me.
*Bam*
It's not the amount of caps it's how they perform.
Cahill has proved he's good playing for a lesser side in England just because he doens't have 75 caps it doesn't matter.
Ian Wright never got that many caps for England but look how good he was.
I've only got bad memories of Mertersacker, going back 5 years.
They came 3rd in the World Cup in 2006.
Fair enough if you personally don't rate him, I've no strong opinion but he's played for a decent club and is an international regular for a far better international side than England. Cahill is playing for a crap club and struggles to get near the England side.
Well, it says something about him that no big clubs have come in for Cahill and he's not a regular for England.
The fact Mertersacker is such a regular for Germany says to me that they think he performs quite well. And frankly, Germany are a much better international side than we are.
Let's see how he does, at least he's tall and we've all thought for years our team is too small. It may help with the infamous set piece problem.
Imagine you are a club that don't watch and read the English media. who would you get?
Mertesacker, 26, 2 WC played, 75 caps in the German national team which reached the top 4 both times
or
Cahill, 25, 3 caps in the England national team, no WC, no CL experience, playing for Bolton.
?
Finally we sign a decent centre half.
wait a minute people are moaning about the signing of a world class centre back??
2006 was a long time ago. How old was he? 20, 21? They came third at least.
Can't judge a young player too harshly in the World Cup. If you'd have watched Kaka, Ronaldo and Messi during the last WC, you'd have wondered what the fuss was all about if you've never seen them play before.
I'm not sure about the guy, but we might as well wait and see. He's got to be better than the rubbish we currently have in our team.
Delighted with this signing. Brilliant CB whenever I've seen him and has performed at the highest level where he was awesome at the last 2 World Cups.
We could still sign Cahill. Major doubts over Vermealens long term fitness afaik.
Not that I rate Cahill. Remembers watching him get beat up at wembley vs Stoke during the FA cup.
Sounds like a good signing providing we play to his strength.
If he's short on pace, we can't be pushing our backline miles forward and allowing the easy ball over the top as we have for the last couple of months.
We don't just need new players, we also need to play differently.
