Van Gaal has been occupied with coaching another side which is more time consuming than punditry yet his new club have pulled of two expensive deals already. And now that half of the teams have been eliminated it should increase the odds of signing someone. Really, unless the player in question is still playing at the world cup and is integral to their first team, there's no reason not to be capable of concluding deals right now.

I heard this on the Arsecast extra the other day but I thought it would also be good to get opinions here. At what date/point will you guys start to officially panic?

I can see the more sensible posters are trying to be more restrained and trying to give the benefit of the doubt to Wenger/Gazidis but eventually there has to be a point, no? I remember last year I got a bit of stick on here for allegedly panicing too early when we were dithering about as usual in the market. I think it was when Liverpool looked to have signed Mkhythrian (actually ended up at Dortmund) and we as usual were bumbling about ........ obviously I was later proved correct with how horrific it ended up.

For me if we haven't wrapped up at least one major deal by the end of July I'd start bricking it. We've got a challenging opening run of games and there needs to be time for whatever signing we make to be embedded into the squad and to acclimatise to both the country (assuming he's foreign) and the club. I think any signing after this point won't fully be ready for the first PL game of the season which is why it's imperative it's done by then.
Call me a cynic TEG but I honestly believe we'll get hardly any business done. If we are lucky we'll sign a striker who most likely won't be our first choice target and we'll sign a backup Keeper.

I just don't feel as if Arsene thinks we need much. He will do the bare minimum IMO.

I have very little expectation for this window. It doesn't help that there is very little out there that either hasn't been snapped up already by cheats not observing the waiting period.

Definitely. It's a bit ridiculous to think that after coaching some exceptional players and teams he has, he can't see how much work the current squad needs. Obviously he does know, but won't act on it. Because Wenger isn't looking for anything logical, like money. He can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Wenger just wants to watch the world burn.

Do you think they were Van Gaal signings or club signings though? We know they were after Herrera last summer, and I think Shaw was on their shopping list a long time before they decided to ditch Moyes, so I'd be surprised if van Gaal had much to do here, other than to decide whether to veto the moves or not?

For me, what this proves more than anything is that we shouldn't even need the manager to be around in order to get deals done - I mean if Man U can be signing players while they don't even have one, then surely we should be able to get deals done, if our manager goes for a swim or a stroll on the beach?

That is the ideal situation where the manager has a defined role. Where he identifies targets and lets others get on with signing them. That doesn't seem to be the case at Arsenal where one man is manager, DoF, chief scout, Finance director, all rolled into one. More to the point it presumes the manager wants to have the best players his club can afford to give him the best chance at winning stuff. I'm certain that isn't the case at Arsenal. Our manager presumes HE is the key success factor.

I really want him to buy someone, I mean most of our so called rivals have strengthened. We risk falling further behind, and we don't really need that much. But our manager continues to frustrate. Am I surprised though, not one bit.
