BRIAN McDERMOTT has distanced Reading from reports linking them with a swoop for Andrey Arshavin.
Arshavin, 31, is out in the cold at Arsenal and would fit McDermott’s requirement of signing “players with Premier League experience”.
But the Royals boss insists the Russian is unlikely to end up playing alongside countryman Pavel Pogrebnyak at the Madejski.
McDermott said: “At this time of year you hear lots of rumours — and I have heard that one.
“But I don’t think so.”
With Reading second from bottom in the Premier League, McDermott admits the need for new recruits has never been greater.
But the Royals have no intention of breaking the bank in a bid to avoid relegation to the Championship.
McDermott added: “If we could bring in two or three players that could make a difference, it would be useful to the squad.
“We don’t generally deal in big prices. We try to get players that are available.
“I’d like to bring in two or three with a little bit of experience at the level.”
