Oh, and a word about the referee: ****
I was just talking to LDG before the game about corruption in football. Either that bloke tonight was bent (not like that, although possibly, maybe he's married to one of the AC Milan players, that sort of thing is allowed these days you know) or massively incompetent.
He was shit for both teams tbh. Looked like he didn't know what he was doing.
Bookings for fuckall, then letting more serious stuff go. Mental.
It seems that Wenger and the players really believed they would pull it off tonight. If you look at Alpha's thread earlier, most here didn't give us a hope in hell before kick off. We were hoping that the players would make the aggregate score respectable and win on the night, and carry on that winning form onto Newcastle. But, unfortunately, I don't think it has worked out that way. Because the players - to their credit - hadn't given up and did believe they would win, the result on the night was of no consolation. They looked gutted at the final whistle. Usually at this stage of the season, there's a hangover and we suffer in the league. But lets hope we can carry on playing this way.
I also hope the game today showed Wenger that experimenting and trying different things can work. Too often he is too rigid with his tactics. Today, he was forced to try a more attacking team and formation, and it was great. I don't even think we 'clicked' on the night, really. But that urgency and desperation throughout the team was what got us so close. Things might've faded a bit but it was probably through a lack of quality rather than any lack of effort. In previous years, we have had the quality but not the killer instinct/mentality.
